How Scientists Drill and Measure the Deepest Holes on Earth

Kola SG-3 reached about 12.26 km, but understanding the record means distinguishing vertical depth from well-path length—and knowing how scientists collect cores and downhole data.

The Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia reached about 12.26 kilometres below the surface, but drilling that far is only part of the story. Scientists also have to bring up rock samples, measure conditions underground and be precise about what “deepest” means: a borehole’s vertical depth is not always the same as the length of its path.

How deep is the deepest hole on Earth?

The Kola Superdeep Borehole, known as SG-3, on Russia’s Kola Peninsula is commonly described as the deepest scientific borehole by vertical penetration. The best general figure is about 12.26 kilometres. That is an enormous distance underground, but the sources do not agree on its final depth to the exact metre: a 2026 review reports 12,262 metres of true vertical depth, the DFG/International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) project page gives 12,261 metres, and the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences gives 12,266 metres.

Those small differences are a reason to state the convention and attribute exact values rather than present one number as universally settled. For an overview, “about 12.26 km” communicates the scale without suggesting a precision the references do not share. The DFG/ICDP Kola project page, GFZ’s scientific-drilling explainer and a 2026 review in Deep Underground Science and Engineering report the differing figures.

“Deepest” depends on the measurement

True vertical depth (TVD) measures how far a point lies below the surface vertically. Measured depth (MD) follows the borehole’s actual path from its starting point. A well drilled on a curved or extended trajectory can have a greater MD than TVD: its route through the ground is longer than its vertical reach.

This distinction matters when comparing Kola with commercial extended-reach wells. The 2026 review lists the Sakhalin OP-11 well at about 12,345 metres MD but 1,784 metres TVD, and Qatar’s BD-04A at about 12,290 metres MD but 1,484 metres TVD. Their paths are longer than Kola’s reported depth, but those MD figures do not mean that either well reaches as far vertically underground. A record stated without its depth convention can therefore be misleading.

Why drill a scientific borehole?

A borehole gives scientists access to material and conditions that cannot be examined directly at the surface. It can provide rock samples from known depths, and it can serve as a route for instruments that measure the surrounding subsurface. The GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences describes scientific drilling as a way to obtain data and samples from the geological subsurface to investigate scientific questions.

Kola SG-3 was part of a former Soviet Union program to investigate the continental crust by deep drilling. The DFG/ICDP account describes the borehole sequence as Lower Proterozoic Pechenga sedimentary-volcanic rocks from the surface to 6,842 metres, followed by Archean granitic-metamorphic basement from 6,842 to 12,261 metres. The basement rocks listed include gneisses, amphibolites, migmatites and granitoids. These depths and rock descriptions show what the project encountered; they should not be taken to mean every borehole crosses the same sequence.

How does drilling proceed section by section?

A deep drilling rig advances a drill head at the end of hollow drill pipe. As the head cuts into rock, the rig adds pipe in sections so the drill string can extend farther down. Drilling fluid is pumped down through the pipe to the bit. It cools the drill head and carries broken rock fragments, called cuttings, back toward the surface through the borehole.

The basic idea is a circulating system: fluid travels down the pipe, reaches the bit, and returns upward carrying cuttings. Those fragments can show what material the bit has broken through, but they are not intact samples. The drilling process crushes or breaks the rock into pieces, and circulation transports those pieces upward.

Keeping the borehole usable

As drilling continues, sections of the borehole may need support or isolation. Casing—pipe installed in the hole and cemented in sections—can help support the borehole wall or separate one interval from another. Whether and how it is used depends on wall stability and fluid conditions. Scientific projects share these broad drilling principles, but the general method does not establish that every project uses an identical rig, casing plan or configuration.

Drilling is not simply a matter of extending a pipe as far as it will go. The hole must remain accessible for further drilling, sample recovery and measurements. Circulating fluid, the condition of the borehole and the suitability of equipment all affect the work. At great depth, heat adds another constraint: tools and instruments have to operate in the conditions the project encounters.

How do scientists recover rock samples?

For an intact cylindrical sample, scientists use a hollow coring bit. Rather than breaking the entire rock face into cuttings, the bit cuts around a central column of rock so that the column enters an inner core tube. The resulting core preserves a more continuous piece of material than the fragments carried up in drilling fluid.

Depending on the system, the core may be recovered by pulling the whole drill string or by retrieving an inner tube through the drill pipe on a wire or rope. These are general ways to obtain cores; the particular equipment and recovery method depend on the drilling project.

Core and cuttings answer different questions

  • Core: A cylindrical, relatively intact piece of rock collected with a coring bit and inner tube. It allows scientists to examine a continuous sample.
  • Cuttings: Fragments produced as the drill head breaks rock and carried toward the surface by the circulating fluid. They provide material from drilling, but they are not an intact core.

The distinction is important when interpreting what a project “collected.” A borehole may yield cores, cuttings, or both; the fact that drilling fluid returns fragments does not mean scientists have recovered a continuous rock cylinder from every interval.

How do scientists measure what is underground?

Rock samples are only one way to learn about a borehole. After drilling an interval, scientists can lower geophysical probes into the hole on cables. Sensors on the probes collect readings as they travel through the borehole, producing profiles of physical, chemical or mechanical properties at different depths. The particular sensors and measurements depend on the scientific question.

A borehole can also host instruments that remain in place to monitor conditions over time. In that case, it is not just a passage for collecting samples or lowering temporary probes: it becomes an instrumented window into the subsurface. GFZ notes that fiber-optic cables can measure temperature or stress along an entire borehole.

What a downhole profile adds

A recovered sample is a piece of rock from a particular interval. A measurement profile adds information about how a property varies along the borehole. Scientists can use the two kinds of evidence for different purposes: samples provide material to examine, while instruments and probes record properties at depth or track them over time. No single probe or cable measures every relevant property, so the method has to match the question being investigated.

Depth also matters when interpreting a reading. A probe lowered into a borehole records its position along that hole; if the borehole is not vertical, the path distance and vertical depth differ. That is why depth conventions are important not only for record claims, but also for describing where a sample or measurement came from.

What makes extreme-depth drilling difficult?

Heat is one clear engineering constraint, but temperature figures from separate projects should not be treated as though they describe a single universal relationship between depth and heat. GFZ reports that Germany’s KTB deep-drilling project reached 9,100 metres in conditions exceeding 260°C. The 2026 review lists Kola SG-3 temperatures of 212–230°C. These are project-specific reports from different boreholes, not interchangeable measurements or a formula for predicting temperature at a given depth.

Such conditions matter because the tools used to drill and measure must function underground. Heat can challenge tool reliability, and changing rock conditions add practical demands on drilling and measurement. The figures establish that deep projects can encounter very high temperatures; they do not show that every hole at a particular depth will have the same temperature.

There is also a difference between drilling toward a scientific objective and pursuing a commercial well path. A useful comparison needs more than a headline depth: it should specify TVD or MD, the project’s purpose, the geological setting and what samples or downhole measurements were collected. A long well path and a deep vertical scientific borehole are not automatically comparable achievements.

How to read a “deepest hole” claim

When a record or comparison gives a borehole depth, check what the number measures and what kind of project it describes. The same number can imply different things if one source reports vertical reach and another reports distance along a curved trajectory. For Kola, the defensible general description is about 12.26 kilometres deep; exact published terminal figures vary slightly.

  • Look for the depth convention: TVD is vertical reach; MD follows the well path.
  • Identify the project: A scientific borehole and a commercial extended-reach well may have different objectives and trajectories.
  • Check the geological context: Kola crossed the Pechenga sedimentary-volcanic sequence before entering Archean basement.
  • Separate sample types: A core is an intact cylindrical sample; cuttings are fragments returned by drilling fluid.
  • Distinguish readings from samples: Probes and installed instruments measure properties downhole, sometimes over time.
