How Scientists Discover and Document New Deep-Sea Species

A deep-sea sighting is only the start. Scientists trace observations to their location, compare specimens and DNA with known relatives, and publish evidence supporting a new species description.

Scientists do not establish a new deep-sea species from a surprising video alone. They record where and how an animal was observed, collect a specimen or tissue when feasible, compare its physical traits and sometimes its DNA with those of known relatives, and publish evidence explaining what makes it distinct. Images, sample records, sequences and environmental details let other researchers check the identification—and revise it if later evidence changes the picture.

What counts as discovering a new deep-sea species?

Discovery is a sequence of decisions, not a single dramatic moment. A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) may record an unfamiliar-looking animal, but that observation makes it a candidate for investigation. Scientists still need to determine whether it is genuinely distinct from species already described, where it belongs among related organisms and what evidence supports the conclusion.

Several milestones are easy to confuse: an animal is seen; it is recognized as unusual; a specimen or tissue is collected; experts identify it as potentially unfamiliar; and a formal taxonomic description is published. These events may be separated by substantial work. A provisional label or expedition announcement is not automatically an officially described species.

The formal description makes the case reviewable. It explains the organism’s diagnostic features, compares it with relevant known species and sets out its taxonomic placement. Depending on the organism and available material, the evidence can include physical morphology, DNA, or both. The goal is not simply to give an animal a name, but to make clear why that name represents a distinct species.

How the discovery process works

1. Spot a candidate during a survey

Deep-sea surveys use ROVs and their cameras to observe animals in place, often where direct human observation or routine collection is impractical. Specialists may identify animals during a live dive or later, when they can review the footage alongside collected material. An unusual shape, color or behavior can prompt closer examination, but appearance alone is not proof of novelty.

Video has value beyond the initial sighting: it can preserve the animal’s position and behavior in its habitat. NOAA’s Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide connects images and identifications to dive records, including work done during dives and after footage has been reviewed. An image can still be limited by camera angle, distance, lighting or resolution, so researchers may need additional evidence to distinguish a candidate from a known relative.

2. Record where and under what conditions it was seen

Context helps experts interpret an observation and gives later researchers a way to locate its source. Useful records can include the dive or survey, images, latitude and longitude, depth, ocean or local area, and environmental measurements such as temperature, salinity and oxygen when those are available. NOAA’s identification guide includes these kinds of fields to the extent known, alongside taxonomic placement and a link to the dive landing page.

These details are not decoration. Location and depth help establish the circumstances of an observation; the source video lets another expert inspect the animal; and environmental information can make the record useful for ecological analysis. A name that cannot be traced back to the underlying observation or sample is less useful than one connected to a documented evidence trail.

3. Collect a specimen or tissue when feasible

A physical sample lets taxonomists examine structures in detail and may provide material for genetic analysis. Collected specimens can be cataloged and deposited in a research collection, so other specialists can consult the material. For example, the sample collected in NOAA’s Gulf of Alaska golden-orb investigation was accessioned into the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History’s Invertebrate Zoology Collection.

Collection is not always possible or harmless. Deep-sea animals can be delicate, and sampling can damage them. Some candidates are observed but never recovered, while others yield only tissue or material that is difficult to examine. Researchers are developing advanced imaging methods to make detailed three-dimensional records of fragile animals and preserve tissue, but imaging does not make every physical examination or sample unnecessary.

When a specimen is available, it can connect the animal’s visible features to a durable reference record. That is particularly valuable when a later researcher questions an identification or when new techniques make it possible to revisit material collected years earlier.

4. Compare diagnostic features with known species

Taxonomists look for physical structures that distinguish the candidate from described relatives. The relevant features depend on the organism; the task is to identify characters that support a meaningful distinction, not merely to list every visible difference. Specialists compare the candidate with scientific descriptions, relevant collections and the expertise of researchers familiar with the group.

This work often extends beyond the expedition team. An animal may belong to a group for which another specialist has the necessary comparative knowledge. MBARI describes researchers checking with other scientists and examining key features before assigning a new name. Collaboration helps guard against mistaking an unusual life stage, variation within a known species or a damaged specimen for a distinct species.

5. Add genetic evidence where it helps answer the question

DNA barcoding identifies an organism by comparing a short sequence from a particular gene with reference sequences. NOAA describes barcoding as useful for distinguishing species, identifying larval or juvenile stages and contributing evidence to new-species descriptions. It can help when an animal is difficult to identify from appearance alone, or when different life stages look unlike one another.

A barcode is not an automatic verdict. Its value depends on the quality of the reference sequence and the reliability of the identification attached to that reference. A sequence match must be interpreted in light of the animal, the taxonomic question and other available evidence. If the reference collection is incomplete or a sample contains confusing material, a barcode may not resolve the identification.

The Gulf of Alaska golden-orb investigation illustrates why researchers combine approaches. In NOAA’s 2025 account, the first DNA barcoding result was inconclusive, likely because DNA from microscopic organisms on the sample complicated the analysis. Morphological examination found stinging cells characteristic of a cnidarian group. Deeper sequencing and mitochondrial comparison then associated the sample with the known giant anemone Relicanthus daphneae; the investigation did not establish a new species. Allen Collins, Ph.D., director of NOAA Fisheries’ National Systematics Laboratory, described it as “a complex mystery that required morphological, genetic, deep-sea and bioinformatics expertise to solve.”

6. Distinguish specimen DNA from environmental DNA

Environmental DNA, or eDNA, is genetic material that organisms shed into their surroundings. In an ocean workflow, researchers collect water, filter and preserve material, catalog extracts, sequence DNA and compare the resulting sequences with taxonomic references. NOAA’s described process includes sampling with an ROV and CTD rosette, followed by laboratory processing and standardized public release of sequence data and taxonomic assignments.

eDNA can help detect organisms or characterize a community from water samples, including when an animal is not directly observed or collected. But detection of a sequence in water establishes that genetic material was present in the sample; by itself, it does not provide the physical organism and diagnostic comparison needed for a formal species description. It complements taxonomy rather than replacing it.

Evidence method What it captures Best role in the workflow Main limitation
ROV images and video Appearance, behavior and in-place context Finding and triaging candidates; preserving an observation Angle, distance, lighting or resolution may hide diagnostic features
Collected specimen or tissue Physical structures and, where appropriate, material for genetic work Morphological examination and a cataloged voucher record Collection may be difficult, and delicate animals can be damaged
DNA barcode from an organism A short gene sequence compared with reference sequences Corroborating identification or matching life stages Interpretation depends on reliable reference data and sample quality
Environmental DNA Genetic material shed into sampled water Detecting organisms or describing community biodiversity A detection alone does not yield a formally described organism

7. Publish a defensible description and preserve the evidence

Once researchers establish what distinguishes the candidate and how it relates to known organisms, they can present the case in a formal taxonomic paper. MBARI describes such papers as covering key details of morphology and/or DNA, differences from related species and placement in the tree of life. The description makes the reasoning available for expert scrutiny rather than leaving the conclusion as an expedition team’s informal identification.

A useful public record connects the name or identification to evidence: specimen or sequence information, images, location and depth, and collection or dive metadata. NOAA’s Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide follows the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) classification and may be corrected after expert reports or updated to reflect taxonomic revisions and new descriptions accepted in WoRMS. Scientific identification is therefore revisable: a record can change as the evidence or classification improves.

Why a surprising sighting may not become a new species

Several explanations can account for an unfamiliar-looking animal without requiring a new species. It may be a known organism seen from an unusual angle, a juvenile or larval stage that looks different from the adult, or a member of a known group whose features are not clear in the footage. A sample can also be damaged or contain material from other organisms that complicates genetic analysis. These possibilities are why the process combines observation, expert comparison and, when useful, molecular work.

Sometimes the evidence points back to a species already known to science. In the golden-orb case, the combination of microscopic morphology and deeper genetic analysis connected the sample to Relicanthus daphneae. That is a successful identification, even though it is not a new-species description. Conversely, a candidate can be worth documenting even if no specimen is available: video and context preserve useful evidence, while leaving the limits of identification clear.

How long does it take to name a new deep-sea species?

There is no general timeline established by these examples. A candidate may require additional collection, comparison with scientific literature and museum material, consultation with specialists, or analysis of DNA. The work depends on what evidence exists and how difficult the organism is to place among known relatives. The observation date and the publication date can therefore be different milestones, and a public report that an animal was documented should not be read as proof that a final formal description has already appeared.

What recent examples show about scale

Counts of discoveries are meaningful only with their date, scope and wording attached. MBARI reported in 2025 that its Designing the Future 3 expedition in the tropical South Atlantic documented more than 30 new species using imaging systems and AI tools. That is the expedition report’s documentation count; it does not establish that each animal already had a final published name.

In a 2022 institutional account, MBARI said its researchers had discovered more than 240 new species over 35 years, including 30 new worms. A separate MBARI account from around 2018 reported over 200 species discovered through MBARI research and cited biologist Linda Kuhnz’s estimates that over 130 had been formally named and at least another 70 were awaiting formal names. NOAA’s guide-update account from around 2023 reported over 3,000 identified deep-sea coral species. These figures describe different dates, organizations and categories—discovered, documented, formally named or identified—and should not be added together or treated as one current census.

What readers should look for in a credible species claim

  • A clear evidence trail: images, a specimen or sequence record, and the location and depth connect the claim to the observation or sample.
  • A comparison with known relatives: the description explains which diagnostic traits distinguish the candidate and how it fits among related organisms.
  • Appropriate use of DNA: genetic evidence is interpreted alongside morphology and reliable references, rather than presented as an automatic species verdict.
  • Careful wording about status: “observed,” “documented,” “identified,” “described” and “formally named” refer to different stages of the work.
  • Room for revision: database entries and classifications can be corrected as specialists review evidence and taxonomy changes.
