Scientists date an impact crater by analyzing minerals or rocks that were formed or altered by the impact, then checking whether the isotope age records the event rather than older rock formation or later heating. Impact melt that crystallized after the collision and shocked minerals whose isotope systems were disturbed can both provide evidence. The sample’s geological context and the method’s uncertainty are as important as the number.
Why the rock sample determines what an age means
A crater contains target rocks that existed before impact, as well as material that may have melted, fractured, or been shocked during the collision. A mineral in an unaltered target rock can therefore give an age much older than the crater. Scientists need to establish that the dated material formed or had its isotope system changed during the impact.

They assess the mineral’s relationship to the crater, its degree of shock, and its thermal history. Those clues help distinguish a primary crystallization age from an impact-related reset or loss of isotopes, and from changes caused by later heating. The U.S. Geological Survey’s overview of impact-structure methods describes techniques including 40Ar/39Ar, U-Pb dating, and fission-track analysis; these methods answer different questions depending on the material analyzed. 40Ar/39Ar: measuring an isotope system disturbed by impact
Potassium-40 decays to argon-40. In 40Ar/39Ar analysis, a sample is irradiated so some potassium-39 is converted to argon-39; the argon isotope measurements are then used to calculate an age. A sample’s age spectrum can reveal whether argon was lost or the isotope system was disturbed, while geological evidence helps determine whether that disturbance is related to the impact. The USGS explains the method’s place in geochronology on its radiometric time-scale page, which lists potassium-40’s half-life as 1.25 billion years. That half-life is background to the dating system, not the age of a particular crater.

U-Pb dating: reading zircon grains with different histories
Zircon can preserve the age when it first crystallized, but shock can disturb its U-Pb isotope system. In a 1993 study of single zircons from K/T distal ejecta in Colorado’s Raton Basin, less-shocked grains remained near a primary age of 544 ± 5 million years, while highly shocked and granular grains were displaced toward 65.5 ± 3.0 million years. The authors used the contrast to investigate both impact timing and the source of the ejecta. These are reported values for specific grains, not a universal age for impact craters. Krogh, Kamo, and Bohor’s 1993 zircon study.
Other techniques depend on the material
Impact-structure investigations also use ion-microprobe U-Pb dating of minerals such as zircon and fission-track methods. A method is useful only when its mineral, isotope system, and thermal or shock response suit the event being dated; the techniques are not interchangeable. What published crater examples show
Manson structure: argon loss in shocked microcline
Kunk, Izett, Haugerud, and Sutter’s 1989 40Ar/39Ar age-spectrum study analyzed shocked microcline from the crystalline central uplift of Iowa’s Manson impact structure. They reported severe argon-40 loss at 65.7 ± 1.0 million years ago and said the age was indistinguishable from the K-T boundary within analytical precision. The result is an interpretation with stated uncertainty, not an exact timestamp. Kunk and colleagues’ 1989 Manson study.
Distal ejecta: old crystallization and impact disturbance in one set of grains
The zircon example shows why the age of a crater cannot be inferred just by dating any nearby mineral. Less-shocked grains retained an older signal, while more strongly shocked grains were displaced toward the impact-time estimate. Reading both the grain’s shock state and the isotope result helps separate target history from impact-related change. Krogh, Kamo, and Bohor’s 1993 zircon study.

How to evaluate a reported crater age
When comparing published ages, check what was dated and how the authors interpret its isotope record. The sample description is part of the result, not incidental detail.
- Material: Is it impact melt, shocked crater rock, or a mineral in distal ejecta?
- Event recorded: Does the age represent crystallization, shock-related resetting or isotope loss, or later thermal history?
- Shock evidence: How strongly was the mineral affected, and does it retain a primary pre-impact age?
- Uncertainty: What uncertainty is reported, and do the authors consider the compared ages distinguishable?
- Geological context: How is the sample connected to the crater or ejecta layer?
These checks explain why the Manson argon result and the shocked-zircon results should be read with their sample descriptions and authors’ interpretations, rather than compared as bare numbers.

Radiometric dating is not lunar crater counting
For the Moon, scientists also estimate the ages of geological units and individual craters from crater-size-frequency distributions. This crater-count chronology is a different approach from measuring isotope ages in rocks; it uses the abundance and size distribution of surface craters rather than dating a mineral’s isotope system. Hiesinger and colleagues’ 2023 review of lunar cratering chronology.

Characterizing impact-melt types and their chemistry or texture helps identify and understand sample material, but such analysis is not automatically a radiometric age determination. For example, the USGS’s 2024 Meteor Crater report focuses on geochemical and textural characterization of impact melts; it should not be cited as a radiometric date for Meteor Crater.
