Schools can prepare every adult who works with students to notice meaningful changes, respond with care, and promptly connect a student with the right support. The goal is not to make teachers mental-health clinicians: individual suicide-risk assessment belongs with appropriately trained mental-health professionals. A good training program gives staff a clear, practiced route to those professionals and to emergency help when needed.
What staff training should—and should not—do
Train all staff who interact with students, including teachers and other school personnel, to recognize warning signs and take appropriate action. SAMHSA’s Preventing Suicide: A High School Toolkit distinguishes staff awareness and response from individual risk assessment by appropriately trained mental-health professionals.

That boundary makes the training more useful, not less. Staff should know whom to consult—such as a school counselor, nurse, psychologist, social worker, or administrator—and how the school connects students to crisis and mental-health services. SAMHSA’s guidance for educators emphasizes knowing where to turn and how to access support.

- Sadness or withdrawal lasting more than two weeks.
- Self-harm attempts or plans.
- Sudden, overwhelming fear.
- Severe out-of-control behavior that may harm someone.
- Intense worries that disrupt daily activities.
- Repeated substance use.
- Severe mood swings.
- Drastic changes in behavior or personality.
These signs are reasons to seek support, not grounds for labeling a student or deciding what condition they have. SAMHSA’s suicide warning signs guidance notes that risk is greater when a behavior is new or increasing and appears connected to a painful event, loss, or change. Staff training should therefore include scenarios that ask what has changed, in what context, and whom to consult—not exercises in diagnosis.
Build a training program staff can use
1. Establish shared, age-aware language
Give staff a common vocabulary for distress, trauma, mental health, and the limits of their roles. The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) recommends establishing a shared understanding of trauma and its effects as a foundation for whole-school support. Its trauma-sensitive training and coaching series is organized around understanding trauma, supportive environments, identifying students who may need more intensive support, and educator well-being.

2. Rehearse a supportive first response
Use role-play to practice listening without judgment, speaking calmly, and taking a student’s concern seriously. Staff should not promise secrecy when safety may be at stake. The sources here establish the importance of recognition, consultation, and referral, but do not supply a complete scripted conversation protocol. Schools should develop practice scenarios with qualified mental-health staff and align them with local policy.

Every staff member should be able to find the school’s current protocol and identify the designated contact and a backup. The protocol should explain how to share a concern under school policy, what documentation and communication steps apply, how families enter the process, and what to do if danger appears immediate. Rehearse the route rather than relying on staff to remember an unfamiliar document during a stressful moment.

For U.S. crisis support, SAMHSA identifies 988 as a 24/7 resource available by call, text, and chat for mental-health and substance-use concerns. SAMHSA’s National Behavioral Health Crisis Care Guidance describes a crisis system that includes someone to contact, someone to respond, and a safe place for help. Schools need to map those resources to their own local contacts and procedures; national guidance is not a substitute for a school’s emergency protocol.
4. Make everyday practice trauma-sensitive
Staff may not know which students have experienced trauma. IES recommends proactive supports throughout the school so support is available without requiring students to disclose personal histories; this can also reduce the possibility of retraumatization. Training can address the school environment, student and family experiences, and how staff identify students who need more intensive support. IES quotes the principle directly: “Educators do not need to become mental health professionals or reduce their focus on instruction to support students experiencing trauma.”

5. Include staff well-being and organizational support
IES includes educator well-being as one of its four areas for staff learning and distinguishes individual practices from organizational responsibilities. A training plan should address both: staff capacity to support students and the school conditions that help staff carry out that work. This makes well-being part of the school’s support approach rather than an expectation that each employee manage the burden alone.

Short refreshers, scenario practice, coaching, and periodic checks of contact information can keep the response route familiar. IES describes a four-session training and coaching series developed with Marshall County Schools and REL Appalachia as one example; it is not evidence that every school needs the same number of sessions or format.

Choose training that fits the school
When evaluating a training option, compare its scope and implementation needs rather than treating all mental-health training as interchangeable.
| What to check | Questions for school leaders |
|---|---|
| Scope | Does it teach awareness and referral, or clinical assessment? Staff awareness training should not be presented as training to assess individual suicide risk. |
| Fit | Does the material suit the school’s grade levels, staff roles, and student population? |
| Whole-school support | Does it address trauma-sensitive universal practice and educator well-being? |
| Practice and follow-up | Does it include realistic scenarios, coaching, or refreshers, and who provides ongoing support? |
| Local alignment | Does it match the school’s crisis, referral, confidentiality, and family-communication policies? |
| Delivery | Are instructor qualifications, accessibility, cost, and the time required suitable for the school? |
SAMHSA’s high-school toolkit is an official example with a staff education and training section. Its existence does not establish that a particular edition or listing is currently available through a retailer. The sources cited here do not provide comparable evidence to rank commercial training providers, so schools should assess programs against their local needs and qualified professional guidance.
Adapt the plan to local rules and services
The federal resources cited here provide U.S. training principles and general crisis pathways, not a single procedure for every school. State, district, and school requirements may differ, including procedures for emergency response and family involvement. Confirm the current local policy, contacts, and applicable requirements with district leadership and qualified school mental-health professionals. The U.S. Department of Education’s mental-health resource page is one federal starting point.
