How SaxaVord Spaceport Compares With Other UK Launch Sites

SaxaVord is a licensed vertical-launch site in Shetland. See how its mission and readiness compare with Cornwall’s former air-launch approach and other UK spaceport concepts.

SaxaVord is the UK’s licensed vertical-launch spaceport on Unst in Shetland, designed for orbital and suborbital missions. It is not interchangeable with Cornwall’s former horizontal air-launch operation or with sites still at the planning, test or development stage. The key differences are launch method, intended mission and how far each site has progressed: a licence or launch preparation does not prove that a rocket has reached orbit.

UK launch sites at a glance

The UK Space Agency, Civil Aviation Authority and Department for Transport’s 2023 guide to UK spaceports describes sites with different roles and levels of maturity. The CAA’s licence register and UK Space Agency annual reports provide later status information where available.

Site Location and launch mode Intended role or listed capacity What its status means
SaxaVord Lamba Ness, Unst, Shetland; vertical launch Orbital and suborbital missions, including polar and sun-synchronous orbits. No apples-to-apples SaxaVord payload figure is stated in the 2023 guide. Has a CAA spaceport licence and range-control licence; CAA records list vertical-launch operator licences for Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA), Skyrora and HyImpulse. These permissions and preparations are not a completed launch.
Space Hub Sutherland A’ Mhòine peninsula, Sutherland, mainland Scotland; planned vertical launch Intended polar and sun-synchronous access; the 2023 guide lists payload capacity as less than 500 kg. Orbex paused construction in December 2024 and planned to launch first from SaxaVord. The UK Space Agency reported Orbex entered administration in February 2026; Sutherland should not be treated as an active, ready orbital service.
Spaceport Cornwall Cornwall Airport Newquay; horizontal launch from a carrier aircraft The 2023 guide lists 300 kg to low Earth orbit. Virgin Orbit’s January 2023 mission was the UK’s first orbital launch attempt from UK soil, but the satellites did not reach orbit. The CAA register identifies Virgin Orbit as defunct; the former service should not be described as currently available.
Spaceport 1 Scolpaig Farm, North Uist, Outer Hebrides; vertical The official guide lists a suborbital role. A suborbital flight site is not the same as an orbital launch site.
Glasgow Prestwick Prestwick, South Ayrshire; horizontal orbital concept The guide lists intended orbital inclinations and names Astraius as the planned operator. Planned departures do not establish completed launches or a currently available service.
Spaceport Machrihanish Campbeltown, Argyll; air-launch, vertical and high-altitude-platform concepts The guide describes several possible modes. Development and research activity should not be mistaken for routine orbital launches.
Spaceport Snowdonia Llanbedr, Gwynedd; horizontal, vertical and rail concepts The guide notes flight-test heritage and range-control capabilities via Aberporth. Test heritage and listed modes do not establish routine commercial orbital service.

How SaxaVord differs from Cornwall

Vertical launch from Shetland

SaxaVord’s defining distinction is its vertical-launch design and location on Unst, the northernmost inhabited island in the Shetland Islands. The UK Space Agency’s spaceport guide describes intended polar and sun-synchronous orbital access as well as suborbital missions. The CAA register lists the Shetland Space Centre Limited spaceport licence as issued on 15 December 2023.

Horizontal air launch from Cornwall

Cornwall’s approach was horizontal: a rocket carried by an aircraft was released for launch. The CAA register lists Cornwall Airport Limited’s spaceport licence as issued on 15 November 2022. Virgin Orbit’s January 2023 flight was an orbital launch attempt, not a successful satellite deployment: the satellites failed to reach orbit. The UK Space Agency recounts the outcome in its 2024–2025 annual report, while the UK Government’s Spaceflight from the UK page provides context for the attempt.

Why the payload figures do not make a fair ranking

The 2023 guide lists 300 kg to low Earth orbit for Cornwall and less than 500 kg for Sutherland, but it does not give a comparable SaxaVord payload figure. These are site-guide descriptions, not independently verified current vehicle performance. Different launch modes and missions also make a direct capacity ranking misleading.

Licences, preparations and successful launches are different milestones

A spaceport licence or launch-operator licence establishes regulatory permission within its scope; it does not certify that a vehicle has flown successfully, reached orbit or will launch on a particular schedule. The CAA explains the regulatory framework in Operating a spaceport: rules and regulations. Its licence register lists RFA’s vertical-launch licence as issued on 14 January 2025 and Skyrora’s as issued on 24 July 2025. It also lists a HyImpulse UK Limited vertical-launch licence dated 1 October 2026.

That last register date is later than the article’s stated publication date of 4 October 2026; the register entry is evidence of a listed licence, not of a completed flight. Separately, the UK Space Agency’s 2025–2026 annual report describes preparations for an RFA launch planned for 2026. A planned launch remains a plan unless and until the flight takes place, and preparations do not establish an orbital result.

Where the other UK sites stand

Sutherland: a technically relevant comparison, but stalled development

Sutherland shares SaxaVord’s vertical-launch concept and intended access to polar and sun-synchronous orbits. Its development status changed materially: the UK Space Agency’s 2024–2025 annual report records that Orbex paused construction in December 2024 and intended to launch first from SaxaVord. The Agency’s 2025–2026 report says Orbex entered administration in February 2026. The 2023 guide’s capacity figure is therefore not evidence that Sutherland is ready to host launches.

Spaceport 1: vertical does not necessarily mean orbital

Spaceport 1, at Scolpaig Farm on North Uist, is listed for suborbital activity. That purpose is distinct from putting satellites into orbit, even though both can involve vertical flight.

Prestwick, Machrihanish and Snowdonia: concepts and test capabilities

Glasgow Prestwick is described as a horizontal orbital concept with Astraius named as a planned operator. Machrihanish’s guide-listed possibilities include air launch, vertical launch and high-altitude platforms. Snowdonia’s listed horizontal, vertical and rail concepts sit alongside flight-test heritage and range-control capabilities via Aberporth. Those descriptions establish intended roles or capabilities, not a record of routine commercial orbital service.

How to compare UK launch sites usefully

  • Check the launch mode: vertical launch from a spaceport and horizontal launch from an aircraft require different infrastructure and operations.
  • Check the mission: suborbital flight, orbital insertion and flight testing are different outcomes; “spaceport” alone does not tell you which one a site supports.
  • Separate permissions from performance: a licence is a regulatory milestone, while a successful launch and satellite deployment are operational outcomes.
  • Date-check development claims: construction, operator status and planned launch dates can change, as Sutherland’s status demonstrates.
  • Compare payload figures cautiously: published site-guide figures do not necessarily describe comparable vehicles, missions or current performance.
