A phone can send a message without cell service only if it has compatible satellite hardware and an active satellite feature for its model, software, and location. Outdoors, you follow the phone’s on-screen prompts to point it toward a satellite; the phone sends a short message over a slower, lower-capacity link, and the service routes it onward. It is not a setting that lets any phone connect to space, and ordinary messaging to contacts is not the same as emergency satellite SOS.
What happens when you send a satellite message
- The phone switches to a supported satellite feature. A compatible phone detects that cellular and Wi-Fi service are unavailable and offers its satellite workflow. The feature depends on the phone’s hardware and service support.
- You orient the phone for a usable view of the sky. Follow the on-screen guidance and move to an open area if possible. The phone must establish and maintain a link; it is not simply transmitting through any obstruction.
- The message travels over a limited satellite connection. Satellite links have less capacity and more delay than ordinary cellular texting, so sending can take noticeably longer.
- The service routes it to the right destination. Depending on the feature, the message may go to a contact, a carrier-connected messaging path, or emergency services. The exact route depends on the provider.
Apple’s security guide describes its own satellite architecture: Apple establishes a secure session between the off-grid iPhone and an Apple data center, and SMS uses a network Interworking Function to communicate with carriers. That is Apple’s documented design, not a universal description of every satellite phone service. Google describes Pixel Satellite SOS as connecting to satellites and then an emergency service provider.

Everyday messages and emergency SOS are different
Satellite messaging can mean either a limited way to keep in touch with contacts or an emergency-only service. Check the purpose of the feature on your phone before relying on it.
Apple Messages via satellite
Apple supports Messages via satellite on iPhone 14 or later, in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Japan, subject to supported software and an active SIM. Not all carriers support satellite SMS. The phone prompts you when cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable; iMessage is used when available, while SMS can be used if iMessage is unavailable. Apple says iMessage via satellite requires the recipient to have iOS 18 or later. Some incoming messages are limited to emergency contacts or Family Sharing members unless you have already messaged the sender.

The feature supports texts, emoji, and Tapbacks. It does not support group messages, photos, videos, audio messages, or stickers over satellite.
Google Pixel Satellite SOS
Google documents Satellite SOS for Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. It is for contacting emergency services, not for ordinary conversations with friends and family. The flow uses an emergency questionnaire followed by a satellite text conversation; Google’s guidance says to use Google Messages as the default messaging app.

- Check in with contacts directly by using preset messages that do not count toward your allotted text messages (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Share your GPS location (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
Why location and obstructions matter
A clear outdoor view of the sky gives the phone the best chance of making and maintaining a connection. Buildings, terrain, trees, and other obstructions can delay or prevent it. Apple’s support information gives conditional examples: with a direct view of the sky and horizon, a message may take about 30 seconds; under light or medium foliage it may take more than a minute. Heavy foliage or surrounding obstructions can stop the connection. These are examples for particular conditions, not a delivery-time guarantee; Apple’s iOS 26 guide warns that sending may take a few minutes.

A country appearing on Google’s supported list does not guarantee connectivity there: network coverage and conditions, as well as government and operator participation, can affect service.

Use the emergency workflow when someone needs help
Apple says not to use Messages via satellite in an emergency. Use Emergency SOS via satellite to contact emergency services instead. Its SOS flow asks what happened, guides you through connecting, and can send responders your answers, location (including elevation), battery level, and configured Medical ID or emergency-contact information.
Pixel Satellite SOS is also an emergency service, not a substitute for general texting. Follow its emergency prompts to contact emergency services. Apple’s government overview notes that satellite text takes longer than SMS and that trees and terrain can affect transmit times.
Check compatibility and terms before you rely on it
Satellite features vary by manufacturer, model, software, country, carrier, and service purpose. Before a trip or purchase, check the current official support information for the exact phone and destination rather than assuming that one brand’s feature applies to another.
