How Sandia’s Automated SOHBRIT Observatory Tracks Satellites

Sandia’s SOHBRIT observatory runs scheduled overnight tasks to collect satellite imagery, giving researchers data for experiments with detection algorithms and machine learning.

Allen Schnibben, a computer scientist at Sandia National Laboratories, uses SOHBRIT to collect satellite imagery through scheduled overnight observations. The 12-foot-wide (3.7-meter-wide) observatory is built from commercial off-the-shelf products, and automation lets him plan a run remotely and review its data the next day. Sandia describes it as a facility for experiments and testing—not as a ready-made blueprint for a home observatory.

How does SOHBRIT track satellites automatically?

Sandia’s account describes a workflow built around scheduled tasks. Schnibben sets up an observing schedule from his desk; the observatory carries out its tasks overnight, and he checks the collected data the following day. He says: “From my desk, I can set up a schedule that will execute during the night. And for the most part, I don’t have to continuously monitor it. All I have to do is just come in the next day and I have a fresh new set of data that was collected overnight.”

The approach was intended to reduce the need for someone to operate the observatory in person. “The intent was to put together a system that’s relatively low cost and build some automation software around it so that you don’t need a person out there to operate the observatory,” Schnibben says. Sandia does not identify the telescope, camera, mount, software, or budget, so the description explains the operating idea rather than providing a build guide. Sandia National Laboratories’ October 5, 2026 account is the source for the facility and workflow details.

What does the observatory collect, and how is the data used?

SOHBRIT collects images of satellites for Sandia’s Space Mission Program, supporting experiments and testing. Sandia says employees can use the imagery to work on detection algorithms and machine-learning models. The stated aim is to explore techniques that could extend optical-system capabilities; the report does not publish measured detection accuracy or an achieved collision-avoidance result.

Celestron AstroMaster 130EQ-MD Telescope with Motorized Tracking
  • POWERFUL TELESCOPE FOR ASTRONOMY BEGINNERS: The AstroMaster 130EQ-MD delivers sharp optics, a stable equatorial mount, motorized tracking, and easy operation, making it the top choice for beginners ready to explore the night sky.
  • HIGH-QUALITY 130MM OPTICS: Enjoy views through the 130mm (5”) Newtonian reflector, which features high-quality aluminum and SiO₂ coatings and enough light-gathering ability to view all the best celestial objects.
  • SMOOTH, ACCURATE POINTING: Effortlessly aim and center your target using the two slow-motion control knobs for right ascension and declination whether you’re observing planets or deep-sky objects.
  • MOTOR DRIVE FOR AUTOMATIC TRACKING: Once centered, let the included RA motor drive take over to automatically follow celestial objects as they move across the sky — keeping them perfectly in view without constant manual adjustments.
  • QUICK SETUP: With just a few key parts to assemble, you can go from box to backyard in minutes—no tools required. The sturdy, adjustable tripod provides stable, comfortable viewing tailored to your height, perfect for adults or kids, standing or seated.

The broader motivation is to improve knowledge of where objects are and help predict close approaches. Schnibben puts the risk this way: “If we don’t keep track of them, then satellites could inadvertently come close to each other and potentially run into each other.” That rationale does not mean SOHBRIT by itself prevents collisions.

How many satellites can SOHBRIT observe?

Schnibben says, “On a typical clear night, SOHBRIT can observe about 80 satellites.” This is an attributed figure for a typical clear night, not a guaranteed nightly output or a specification for other observatories. The report does not provide the conditions or method behind that estimate.

  • PURCHASE, ACTIVATE, EXPLORE: Grab a Spot Gen4; Activate by selecting your service plan; Get out there and explore the world with peace of mind

The scale of the tracking challenge is larger than one observatory: a Phys.org report on October 6, 2026, attributing the figure to NASA, said more than 45,000 human-made objects were orbiting Earth as of 2024. That is a dated, NASA-attributed count, not a current 2026 total. Phys.org’s syndicated report gives that figure.

Can a beginner telescope reproduce SOHBRIT?

Not on the information Sandia provides. Schnibben became interested in space through books and a telescope, and he began observing the night sky as a hobby. But neither the telescope he first used nor SOHBRIT’s equipment is identified. A consumer telescope can be a way to explore astronomy; the report does not establish that beginner equipment can reproduce SOHBRIT’s automated satellite collection or support collision analysis.

Schnibben observes that “Space is becoming more readily accessible for different groups of people.” In SOHBRIT’s case, accessibility refers to a facility Sandia assembled with commercial off-the-shelf products and automation. The account does not name brands, components, or a software stack, and it does not offer a parts list or instructions for recreating the system.
