It works only across the close gap between properly aligned coils—not across a room—and support, speed, and accessories vary by model.
How does Samsung wireless charging work?
A Qi wireless charger contains a transmitter coil. Alternating current flowing through it creates a changing magnetic field; a receiver coil in a compatible phone picks up that field and develops an induced voltage. The phone’s charging circuitry uses that energy to charge the battery. The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) describes the principle this way: “An alternating current in the transmitter coil generates a magnetic field which induces a voltage in the receiver coil.”

The phone and charging station can also exchange control signals. Wireless charging is therefore a coordinated transfer between nearby devices, not radio-power delivery over a long distance. How well the coils couple depends on their distance and geometry, which is why placement matters. The WPC explains the principle of inductive power.

No single answer covers every Samsung device. Samsung’s U.S. wireless charging guidance identifies supported Galaxy S, Note, and Z models, while its U.S. charging troubleshooting guidance says Galaxy A, XCover, and Tab families are incompatible with wireless charging. These are regional support lists, and capabilities can differ by exact model, software, carrier, and market. Check Samsung’s current support information for the full model name or number before buying a charger.

Also distinguish basic Qi compatibility from a particular fast-charging mode. Samsung says charging speed and power vary by device; a charger’s advertised maximum does not tell you what a specific Galaxy will receive.
How to charge a Galaxy on a wireless pad
- Connect the charging pad’s cable and power it using the adapter specified for that charger. Samsung recommends the supplied cable and adapter for its chargers.
- Place the phone back-down on the pad, centered over the charging area. Samsung recommends contact between the device’s back and the charger; close a foldable phone before charging.
- Wait for the phone to indicate that charging has started. If both the Galaxy and charger support fast wireless charging, Samsung says that mode activates automatically.
Why won’t my Galaxy charge wirelessly?
Start by confirming that the exact phone supports wireless charging. If it does, work through the physical connection before assuming the charger is faulty:

- Reposition the phone. Center it on the pad so the coils align. A small shift can affect the coupling between them.
- Check the gap. Remove a thick case or an accessory that prevents the phone’s back from sitting close to the charger. Samsung also advises removing a case if needed.
- Check the power source. Use the charger’s specified adapter and cable rather than assuming any USB power supply will support its intended mode.
- Verify certification and mode. Samsung says fast wireless charging requires devices certified by Samsung and the WPC. A generic “fast” label alone does not establish that a third-party charger supports the desired Samsung mode.
Samsung’s advice about Qi2-certified covers and Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) chargers is specific to third-party cover compatibility and magnetic alignment. In that context, Samsung mentions charging of up to 15W; this is not a general speed claim for every Galaxy phone, case, or wireless charger. Check the exact phone and accessory specifications.
How to choose a wireless charger for a Galaxy
A Qi-compatible pad or stand is the basic accessory for a supported phone. Compare the details that affect whether it will fit your setup:

- Confirm wireless charging support for your exact Galaxy model.
- Check whether the charger is certified and supports the Samsung charging mode you want; Qi compatibility does not guarantee Samsung fast wireless charging.
- Choose a pad or stand based on where its charging coil sits and how you position the phone.
- Check whether your case or magnetic accessory is compatible with that phone and charger.
- Confirm whether the charger includes a suitable power adapter and cable, or specifies what it requires.
Because Samsung says power and speed vary by device, compare model-specific specifications rather than treating a charger’s maximum rating as the phone’s expected charging speed.

Some supported Galaxy phones can share their battery wirelessly through Wireless PowerShare, a separate feature from charging the phone on a pad. Samsung’s instructions and availability vary by device and region. Its U.S. guidance says the sharing phone needs at least 30% battery to turn the feature on.

- Enable Wireless PowerShare from Quick Settings or the phone’s Battery settings, depending on the model.
- Place the compatible receiving device back-to-back with the Galaxy phone and adjust their positions until charging begins.
- Keep the devices still while power is being shared. Remove cases or covers if they obstruct the connection.
Samsung cautions that Wireless PowerShare can affect call reception or data services depending on network conditions. It is useful for sharing some battery power with compatible devices, but is not a substitute for a dedicated charger in ordinary daily use.
