The watch does not take a blood sample. Its result is an estimate, not a diagnosis, and Samsung does not publicly disclose the exact calculation or model-specific accuracy.
How the optical sensor estimates SpO₂
The skin-facing sensor uses photoplethysmography (PPG), an optical method that detects changes in light as blood volume changes with each pulse. Samsung’s developer documentation lists green, red, and infrared PPG data, and identifies SpO₂ as processed blood-oxygen data. Samsung Health Sensor documentation

In pulse oximetry generally, oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin absorb red and infrared light differently. A processor analyzes the changing optical signal associated with pulsating arterial blood and estimates oxygen saturation. The FDA describes this general principle, but it does not establish how Samsung calibrates a particular watch. FDA: Pulse Oximeters
Samsung’s public documentation cited here does not specify the exact wavelengths, proprietary formula, calibration method, or model-by-model accuracy. The general pulse-oximetry explanation should not be mistaken for a disclosure of Samsung’s specific algorithm.

Spot readings and overnight tracking are different workflows
| Measurement | How it starts | When data is collected and viewed |
|---|---|---|
| On-demand spot reading | Open Samsung Health on a supported watch, select Blood Oxygen, then follow the on-screen instructions. Samsung support instructions | You start the measurement and view the result on the watch. |
| Overnight tracking | Enable Blood oxygen in the sleep tracker’s advanced measurements. The setting and availability can vary by model, market, and software. Samsung Health Blood Oxygen data guide | Samsung Health can collect blood oxygen while you sleep when the option is enabled; sleep data is available through compatible wearable features. |
Samsung’s developer materials identify Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Fit, and Galaxy Ring wearable categories for blood-oxygen data. The Galaxy Ring support flow also describes enabling Blood oxygen in sleep advanced measurements. Samsung Galaxy Ring support Samsung does not provide a complete current compatibility matrix for every region in these sources, so check the settings on your device or your local Samsung support page.
The documented workflows do not show that spot measurements are more accurate than overnight tracking, or vice versa; they describe when data is collected, not a comparison of accuracy.

How to get a spot reading
- Rest first. Samsung’s support guidance recommends resting for at least five minutes before a spot measurement.
- Position the watch comfortably. Wear it securely, with the sensor in contact with your skin. Samsung advises checking the wrist location and watch position if measurement is difficult; do not overtighten the band. Samsung measurement guidance
- Open the measurement. On the watch, open Samsung Health, choose Blood Oxygen, and follow the prompts.
- Stay still. Keep still and comfortable while the watch measures. Follow the instructions for your model and software, since menus and flows can change.
Why readings can vary
Samsung says readings may differ and names exercise, altitude, and health condition as factors. Activity or movement during measurement, a poor fit, or incorrect wrist position can also make it harder to obtain a useful optical signal. Resting, keeping still, and wearing the watch correctly follow Samsung’s guidance.

Samsung’s cited public sources do not provide a model-specific accuracy statistic or clinical accuracy table. They also do not establish equivalence to a hospital device or quantify performance across skin tones. Treat a watch reading as an estimate rather than a precision guarantee.
What a reading can—and cannot—tell you
Samsung describes the feature as intended for health management, not diagnosis or treatment. The FDA likewise cautions that pulse oximeters can be inaccurate and advises people concerned about readings to contact a health care provider rather than rely on the number alone. Its concise guidance is: “Do not rely only on a pulse oximeter.” FDA: Pulse Oximeters

A separate fingertip pulse oximeter measures at a different site and is a different product category. The FDA notes that product purpose and accuracy vary; it does not follow that every fingertip unit is intended for medical use or is automatically more accurate than a wearable.

Samsung’s US instructions describe Sleep Apnea as a separate feature that uses PPG-based SpO₂ and actigraphy to look for breathing disruptions from relative decreases in blood oxygen during sleep. It is not the same as taking a spot blood-oxygen measurement, and an ordinary oxygen reading does not diagnose sleep apnea. Eligibility and regulatory context for the separate feature should be checked in the applicable Samsung instructions. Samsung US support
