But it is not a built-in Claude connector, and AWS now limits S3 Object Lambda to existing customers already using it and select AWS Partner Network partners. For a new project, plan around one of AWS’s alternatives instead.
What S3 Object Lambda does in an image workflow
Amazon S3 Object Lambda lets a customer apply custom Lambda code to supported S3 GET, LIST, and HEAD responses. For an image retrieval, the function can return a transformed version—resizing and watermarking are documented examples—rather than the unmodified object. See the S3 Object Lambda user guide.

“On the fly” means the transformation happens during retrieval; it can avoid keeping a separately stored derivative for every transformation. It does not mean the image skips the application or is automatically delivered to Claude. The application still needs to receive the result and submit it using an image-input method supported by its chosen Claude endpoint.

Important: availability is restricted for new projects
As of November 7, 2025, AWS says S3 Object Lambda is available only to existing customers currently using it and select AWS Partner Network partners. Eligible existing users may continue, but AWS says it does not plan new capabilities. A developer beginning a new deployment should not assume they can enable the service. Details are in AWS’s availability notice.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
AWS identifies three alternatives for processing S3 data. Which fits depends on eligibility, where the transformation should run, what processing the image needs, and how the application retrieves and delivers it.
| Approach | Where processing runs | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Existing S3 Object Lambda deployment | Customer-defined Lambda code invoked through an S3 Object Lambda Access Point | Eligible users continuing a workflow already built on the service |
| Dynamic Image Transformation for Amazon CloudFront | CloudFront-based image delivery and transformation solution | Projects that want AWS’s named dynamic-image alternative |
| Lambda invoked through CloudFront, API Gateway, or function URLs | A Lambda function reached through one of the listed invocation paths | Projects that need a custom request and transformation path |
| Client-side processing | The application or client device | Cases where the client can perform the required image work |
AWS says these alternatives can continue to use S3 as the underlying storage, so changing the processing design does not by itself require migrating stored objects. The availability notice does not provide measured cost, latency, throughput, or image-quality comparisons, so evaluate those for your own workload rather than assuming one option is faster or cheaper.

How the data moves from S3 to Claude
- Store the original image in S3. For the Object Lambda route, the design uses a supporting S3 Access Point and an S3 Object Lambda Access Point.
- Configure the transformation. Attach a customer-defined Lambda function to the Object Lambda setup and implement the required image work, such as resizing or watermarking.
- Retrieve through the Object Lambda path. The application requests the object through the Object Lambda Access Point. AWS invokes the function for a supported
GET,LIST, orHEADrequest; a transformed image is returned for aGETwhen the function implements that response. - Send the returned image to Claude separately. The application must pass the image in a form accepted by its Claude endpoint. Object Lambda does not make the Claude request.
For a private S3 object, the retrieval path must be authorized. The application must also handle the separate handoff to Claude; a private S3 location is not automatically an image input that Claude can access.
Choose the image input based on the Claude endpoint
Anthropic Messages API
Anthropic’s vision guide describes image inputs as base64-encoded image content or a URL reference to an online-hosted image. An s3:// URI is not the same thing as a supported online image URL. If the object is private, use an application-mediated retrieval and send supported image content, or design a controlled URL arrangement that meets the endpoint’s requirements.

Legacy Claude on Amazon Bedrock integration
Anthropic’s documentation for the legacy Claude on Amazon Bedrock integration (Opus 4.6 and earlier) lists URL sources for images and documents as unsupported. For that integration, do not rely on URL-source behavior; use a supported image payload. Endpoint capabilities differ, so check the documentation for the specific integration and model version you intend to use.
Implementation details to verify
- Authorization: Confirm that the application, supporting access point, Object Lambda Access Point, and function have the permissions needed for the retrieval and response path.
- Supported request and response behavior: Object Lambda applies to
GET,LIST, andHEADrequests. Image transformation and returning changed image data belong in theGETpath. - Image handling: Decide which dimensions, formats, and transformation work the application needs. The AWS documentation gives resizing and watermarking as examples, not a guarantee for a particular crop, library, or output quality.
- Claude delivery: Confirm the selected endpoint’s accepted image-input method and ensure the application actually passes the transformed result in that form.
- Function runtime: AWS’s 2020 launch article reports a 60-second maximum duration for an S3 Object Lambda function and says the function needs IAM permission for
WriteGetObjectResponseto return transformedGETdata. Because this figure is from the launch article, verify the current technical reference before treating it as a design limit. See AWS’s launch article.
Use Claude’s image analysis with appropriate review
Claude can analyze image inputs, but its interpretation can be wrong. Anthropic advises careful review and cautions against relying on image analysis without human oversight when perfect precision or sensitive analysis is required. Treat the model’s output as an input to a workflow, not guaranteed ground truth.
