In the United States, rideshare apps describe driver screening as a combination of identity verification, driving-record checks and criminal-history checks. They also offer in-app reporting and emergency features, but a background check cannot predict future behavior, and a complaint does not automatically lead to the same outcome every time. The details below reflect Uber and Lyft’s published descriptions as of October 7, 2026; policies and feature availability can vary by location.
How do rideshare apps check their drivers?
Screening is separate from live ride monitoring and from the process used to respond to a safety report. Uber and Lyft describe overlapping safeguards, but their public explanations provide different levels of procedural detail.

Uber’s U.S. screening process
Uber says drivers provide identifying information and a government ID. Its June 26, 2026 account describes a motor vehicle record (MVR) check first, followed by a criminal-background check for applicants who pass the driving stage. Uber says it checks potential criminal records against source records and has a human review the final decision to disqualify an applicant. It reports that around 70% of rejected applications are rejected at the MVR stage; that figure is Uber’s own account, not an industry-wide statistic. Uber’s explanation of its background checks
Uber says checks take place before a driver’s first trip and are repeated at least annually. It also describes continuous monitoring for new charges or convictions between checks. Its screening page notes that annual driving-history reruns do not apply in New York City. Exact checks and lookback periods can vary under state and local law. Uber’s screening overview

These are descriptions from Uber, not an independent audit. Uber also acknowledges that court records can be fragmented or restricted and that human or technical errors can occur. As Hannah Nilles, Uber’s Head of Safety for the Americas, put it: “No background check is perfect or can predict the future.”
Lyft’s published description
Lyft says every driver completes verification, background checks and mandatory safety education before driving. Its public safety page also describes rider-profile verification, monitoring for unusual ride activity and a specialized safety team available by phone or chat 24/7. The page does not provide the same procedural detail about record sources or decision reviews as Uber’s June 2026 account. Lyft’s safety overview

Do Uber and Lyft check drivers every year?
Uber says it re-screens drivers at least annually and continuously monitors for certain new criminal charges or convictions between checks. Its account says annual driving-history checks do not apply in New York City. Lyft’s cited safety overview says drivers complete background checks before driving, but does not state a repeat-check schedule. Check the current platform information for your location because applicable processes can differ by local law.

Background screening and checking who arrives for a specific trip are distinct safeguards. Uber describes collecting identity information and a government ID during onboarding, while Lyft says it verifies drivers; neither cited overview provides enough procedural detail to promise a rider that a particular live identity-matching check will occur on every trip. Before getting in, compare the app’s driver and vehicle details with the person and car that arrived. If they do not match, do not start the ride; use the app’s help or safety options to report the discrepancy.

What happens when you report a rideshare driver?
Uber: action depends on seriousness and detail
Uber says it reviews reports submitted through Support and assesses the reported behavior’s seriousness. According to its June 2026 description, one serious report can result in deactivation. A lower-severity report or one with limited detail may instead result in a warning and an account note that can be considered if further reports arrive. Uber says it does not follow a fixed “three strikes” rule. This is Uber’s account of its own response process; it does not mean every complaint is substantiated or produces an automatic suspension. How to report an issue or emergency
For a non-emergency Uber safety concern, use Help and select the relevant trip. Uber’s U.S. driver-safety guidance also describes reporting crashes through the Driver app’s Safety Toolkit. For urgent danger, use the app’s Emergency Button if available or call 911. If a crash involves injury or property damage, Uber advises contacting police and paramedics, keeping the police report number, taking photos when it is safe, and then reporting the incident in the app. Features can vary by region. Lyft describes real-time monitoring and a Smart Trip Check-In when a ride appears unusual, as well as a safety team available by phone or chat at any time. Its page also says riders can reach ADT emergency professionals through the app. Availability may depend on location and conditions. For an immediate threat, contact local emergency services rather than relying on a later report.
What screening and safety features cannot guarantee
- Screening cannot predict what someone will do later. A person can pass a check and still behave unsafely; records may also be incomplete, restricted or affected by errors.
- A report is not automatically a finding. Platforms say they assess the seriousness and information available, and outcomes can differ from warning or documentation to deactivation.
- App features are not identical everywhere. Local rules, availability and platform procedures can change by city, state or country.
- Feature lists do not establish which app is safer overall. The cited company descriptions do not provide a current, independent, apples-to-apples measure of screening outcomes or incident rates.
How to interpret rideshare safety statistics
Uber’s U.S. Safety Report covers January 1, 2017 through December 31, 2018, and classifies specified serious incident categories under defined methods. It is a historical, U.S.-scoped dataset—not a current incident rate, and not a comparable measure across Uber and Lyft. Uber’s methodology for the 2017–2018 U.S. Safety Report
Uber also says its screening approach has prevented 3.5 million people from joining or remaining on its platform since 2017. That is a company-reported figure, not an independently audited estimate in the cited material. Neither this figure nor a historical incident report establishes a current, independent comparison of how often drivers pass checks, how many reports are substantiated or which platform has lower incident rates.
