How Remote-Controlled Combat Robots Work: Motors, Batteries, and Weapons

Combat robots connect radio controls, ESCs, motors, batteries, weapons and structure. Learn how those systems interact and why design limits vary by event.

A remote-controlled combat robot works by routing a driver’s radio commands through onboard electronics to motors and other mechanisms, while a battery supplies the energy and a chassis carries the resulting forces. The drivetrain moves and steers the machine; a weapon system may spin, lift, hammer, flip, or otherwise act on an opponent. The exact arrangement—and its legal limits—depends on the robot’s design, weight class, organizer, and current rules.

The five systems that make a combat robot work

A useful way to understand a combat robot is to separate it into five connected systems: drivetrain, weapon, power, electronics, and structure. They are not independent. More weapon mass can mean less mass for drive components or armor; higher electrical demand affects the battery, wiring, controllers, and heat management; and the frame has to support the components while surviving impacts. The Combat Robots Wiki overview uses this kind of system-level design approach, with a focus on beetleweight-class machines.

  • Drivetrain: motors and mechanical parts turn electrical energy into movement, steering, and pushing force.
  • Weapon: a motor or another mechanism delivers damage, displacement, or a tactical effect.
  • Power: the battery and electrical paths supply energy to the drive and, when applicable, the weapon.
  • Electronics: the radio receiver and electronic speed controllers (ESCs) interpret and act on the driver’s commands.
  • Structure: the chassis, armor, and mounts hold the robot together and carry forces from movement, impacts, and the weapon.

That model explains why a robot is more than a remote-control vehicle with a weapon attached. Each subsystem has to work within the same mass budget, electrical limits, physical space, and safety requirements.

How a driver’s command becomes movement or weapon action

The control chain starts with the driver operating a radio transmitter. The transmitter sends commands to an onboard receiver. The receiver passes control signals to ESCs, which regulate electrical power delivered to motors. Drive motors turn the wheels or other drive elements; a separate weapon motor may spin a kinetic weapon. Other designs use different mechanisms, so not every robot has the same number or type of motors or controllers.

  1. The driver moves a transmitter control. The command requests an action such as moving, turning, or activating the weapon.
  2. The onboard receiver receives the radio signal. It communicates the control commands to the robot’s electronics.
  3. The relevant ESC controls motor power. An ESC regulates the electrical power sent to a motor in response to the control signal.
  4. The motor produces mechanical action. A drive motor rotates a wheel or drive element; a weapon motor may accelerate a spinning weapon. Non-spinning weapons can use a different arrangement.
  5. The structure carries the loads. The frame and component mounts transmit forces through the robot as it accelerates, pushes, or takes an impact.

The radio link is also part of the safety system. If the signal is lost, a failsafe is intended to stop the robot’s drive and weapon power where the event rules require it. The required behavior and timing are ruleset-specific; a control system should not be assumed compliant just because it works during ordinary driving.

How the drivetrain turns motor rotation into motion

A motor’s rotation does not directly determine how a robot performs. The drive package includes the motor, any gearing, the wheels or other contact surfaces, and the robot’s layout. Their interaction affects speed, torque at the wheel, traction, turning, and how well the robot can keep moving when pushed.

Motor and gearing

Drive motors provide rotation. Where a gearbox or other reduction is used, it trades output speed for greater turning force at the drive element. The suitable motor and ratio depend on the robot’s class, mass allocation, wheel size, traction, and intended behavior. There is no universal motor size or gear ratio that follows from the general description of a combat robot.

Wheels, traction, and layout

Wheels transmit force to the floor, so available traction affects whether motor effort becomes forward motion or wheel slip. Wheel diameter and drivetrain layout also influence speed and maneuverability. A robot designed to push reliably may prioritize a different balance of traction and speed from one designed to reposition quickly. The best balance depends on the rest of the design and on the competition environment.

Why mobility is part of weapon performance

A weapon can be powerful in isolation and still be difficult to use if the robot cannot line up an attack or remain mobile after contact. Conversely, a robust drivetrain can help a robot control position even when it does not have the heaviest weapon. The Combat Robots Wiki overview recommends establishing the class and weapon archetype, setting a mass budget, and sizing the drive package before finalizing the weapon, power system, and structure. That is a useful planning sequence, not a rule that every successful design must follow identically.

How weapon systems create different effects

A weapon converts stored or supplied energy into an effect on an opponent. The mechanism changes the kind of energy it uses, the forces it produces, and the demands it places on the robot. A motor-driven spinner is only one possible approach.

Spinning kinetic weapons

A spinning weapon uses a motor to accelerate a rotating mass. Its design involves energy stored in rotation, tip speed, moment of inertia, spin-up time, and bite—the opportunity for the weapon to engage the opponent rather than simply pass across its surface. These factors are connected: changing the rotating mass or its shape affects energy storage and how the weapon accelerates, while a higher tip speed can bring additional rule limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TRBL’s published rules summary, accessed in 2026, says spinning weapons above 483 km/h (300 mph) tip speed require approval. That threshold belongs to TRBL’s rules and should not be treated as a universal limit. The same summary also says projectile systems require approval.

Lifters, hammers, flippers, and active wedges

Other weapon archetypes create effects through movement rather than continuous high-speed rotation. Lifters raise or displace an opponent; hammers strike; flippers launch or overturn; and a wedge with an active weapon combines a pushing shape with an additional mechanism. These designs shift the mass, power, and structural budget in different ways. A motor may not be the only way to actuate a weapon, and a robot may use a distinct weapon power system rather than the drive motors.

Choosing an archetype is therefore an early design decision, not merely a cosmetic choice. It affects how much mass remains for drive and armor, how the battery must supply power, where components can fit, and which construction or weapon rules apply.

How batteries, current, and runtime fit together

The battery supplies energy to the robot’s electrical systems. Choosing one means considering capacity, cell count, discharge capability, peak current, wiring, connectors, and the expected match duration together. These describe different things: nominal voltage is not a measure of capacity, current capacity is not runtime, and a battery’s stored energy does not by itself prove that it can safely supply a system’s peak demand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Combat Robots Wiki overview recommends choosing a battery that can supply peak bus current and last through a full three-minute match with margin. Three minutes is the overview’s design assumption, not a universal match length. TRBL’s rules summary sets a three-minute match, while COMBATBOTS’ 500 g plastic-class rules, version 1.0 published August 13, 2026, set a two-minute match.

Drive and weapon demand also vary over a match. A system must be planned for the loads it may encounter, not only for ordinary low-demand movement. If peak demand exceeds what the battery and electrical path can support, the robot may fail to deliver its intended performance. Conversely, selecting components without regard to the actual class and design can consume weight and space unnecessarily. The available design information does not establish a universal voltage, capacity, or current rating for combat robots, so such figures must be tied to a particular robot and ruleset.

Why the systems have to be designed together

The central design problem is allocating limited weight and power to competing goals. A larger or more capable weapon can leave less room for armor or drive components. Stronger motors and greater energy demand can increase requirements for the battery, wiring, ESCs, and thermal capacity. A chassis must protect and mount the equipment without taking mass away from the functions the design prioritizes.

  1. Choose the competition class and weapon archetype. These decisions establish the relevant weight allowance and the broad demands the robot will face.
  2. Set a mass budget. Allocate the available mass among the drivetrain, weapon, battery, electronics, structure, and armor before selecting parts.
  3. Size the drive package. Balance motor characteristics, gearing, wheel diameter, traction, speed, and maneuverability for the intended robot.
  4. Size the weapon system. Account for its desired effect, energy or actuation needs, spin-up or action time, and any weapon-specific restrictions.
  5. Choose a battery and electrical path. Check both peak current demand and the runtime needed under the event’s match format, with suitable margin.
  6. Package the structure around the components and loads. The chassis and mounts must hold the systems in place and handle impacts without assuming that armor alone solves every structural problem.
  7. Check the complete design against the current event rules. Confirm limits, allowed components, control behavior, safety procedures, and inspection requirements for the class and edition you will enter.

This sequence is a planning framework, not a guarantee of performance. A change to one system can force revisions elsewhere, so the mass budget and electrical demands should be revisited as the design becomes more specific.

Rules examples: why class and edition matter

Competition rules are set by organizers and can differ by class and edition. The following published examples illustrate the variation; they are not interchangeable standards.

Ruleset and scope Published provisions relevant to the design How to interpret them
TRBL published English rules summary, accessed 2026; examples include its 3 lb antweight class Nominal voltage ceilings listed as 16.8 V for antweight, 25.2 V for beetleweight, and 50.4 V for featherweight; written approval is required above those values. The 3 lb antweight class permits LiPo, LiFe, or NiMH packs in a protected bay, requires a commercial bound 2.4 GHz radio system, a one-hand-accessible master power switch, a one-second radio failsafe, and a physical weapon lock. Its match duration is three minutes. Spinning weapons above 483 km/h (300 mph) tip speed and projectile systems require approval. These are TRBL provisions, not universal limits. Check the current rules for the specific class you plan to enter.
BattleBots official rules index, checked October 9, 2026 The index listed version 2027.01 design and tournament rules, updated October 1, 2026, and a 2027 rules draft. The index identifies current and draft documents, but the available information here does not establish the detailed limits in those documents. Read the applicable document itself.
BattleBots 2022 Design Rules, historical edition The 2022 document stated a 60 V nominal limit for weapon and motion systems, commercially available batteries for standard bots, and commercial DSS radio control with automatic pairing. The 60 V figure and other provisions are historical 2022 rules. Do not present them as current 2027 limits.
COMBATBOTS 500 g plastic class, version 1.0 published August 13, 2026 The rules specify a 500 g class and two-minute match, with defined weight and mobility allowances, limited structural materials, and required safety procedures. This is a particular plastic-class ruleset, not a general allowance for other classes.

When planning a build, distinguish a rules index from the rulebook that governs an entry. For BattleBots, the official index listed 2027.01 documents as of October 9, 2026, but the historical 2022 excerpt is not a substitute for reading the applicable 2027 rules. Likewise, a voltage ceiling is a rule constraint, not a recommended operating voltage or a complete battery specification.

Safety features are part of the operating design

A combat robot’s safety provisions need to be designed into its controls, power layout, and weapon handling. Event rules determine the required implementation, but the source examples highlight several recurring themes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Radio failsafe: loss of the control signal should cause the prescribed safe response, such as cutting drive and weapon power. TRBL’s published English summary requires both systems to be cut within one second after signal loss.
  • Physical weapon lock: a weapon lock helps prevent unintended weapon movement during handling. TRBL’s summary requires a physical lock.
  • Accessible power isolation: the robot needs a way to isolate power in accordance with its event’s rules. TRBL specifies a one-hand-accessible master power switch for its 3 lb antweight class.
  • Protected battery placement: TRBL specifies a protected battery bay for the battery chemistries it permits in that class.
  • Inspection and approval: construction, weapon, voltage, and control requirements must be checked against the rules and inspection process for the event and edition.

These examples describe TRBL provisions, not a universal checklist with identical requirements at every competition. Follow the current rules for the event you intend to enter, and do not assume that a design accepted by one organizer will be accepted by another.

Common design questions and failure points

Why does a fast motor not guarantee a fast robot?

Motor rotation is only one part of the drivetrain. Gearing, wheel diameter, traction, layout, and the robot’s available mass all affect how that rotation becomes movement. A design that prioritizes speed may give up some pushing ability or control under contact.

Does a bigger battery automatically mean a longer match?

Not necessarily. Capacity is only one consideration; the battery must also support the system’s peak current, and the rest of the power path must suit the load. Runtime depends on the robot’s demand during the match, while the match duration itself comes from the event rules.

Does every combat robot use a separate weapon motor?

No single arrangement is universal. A spinning weapon may have a motor separate from the drive motors, while a non-spinning weapon or other mechanism can use a different power arrangement. The design has to be evaluated as a system rather than inferred from one archetype.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a robot use a voltage limit from another competition?

Only if the rules for the intended event allow it. TRBL’s listed nominal ceilings are examples from its rules summary; BattleBots’ 60 V figure is from its 2022 rules and is not established here as a current limit. Confirm the actual class and rules edition before finalizing the power system.

What should be checked when a system does not behave as intended?

Trace the command path and the power path separately. Confirm that the transmitter and receiver are compatible and bound as required, that the receiver is providing the intended signal, and that the relevant ESC is controlling the intended motor. Then check whether the battery and electrical path are suitable for the load, and whether mechanical factors such as gearing, traction, or a weapon mechanism explain the observed behavior. Treat failsafe operation and power isolation as safety checks governed by the event’s rules, not as optional performance troubleshooting.
