Their results vary with the tool and version, language, text length, model, decision threshold, and amount of editing. False positives and false negatives both occur, so a score should prompt closer review—not decide a consequential case on its own.
How reliable are AI detectors?
There is no single accuracy percentage that applies to every detector. A result describes how a particular tool performed on particular texts under particular conditions. Results from different samples, versions, languages, and thresholds are not directly interchangeable.

A detector estimates whether an input resembles patterns associated with AI text represented in its training or evaluation data. It does not reconstruct a text’s writing history or identify its author. A threshold also affects the balance between errors: a system tuned to catch more AI-written text may flag more human writing, while a more cautious setting may miss more AI text.
- False positive: human-written text flagged as AI-generated.
- False negative: AI-generated text not recognized as such.
For that reason, “accuracy” alone is incomplete. Ask how many verified human texts were falsely flagged, how many known AI texts were missed, what threshold was used, and what kind of text was tested.

How often do AI detectors falsely accuse human writers?
The answer depends on the detector, threshold, and unit being measured. Historical figures show why rates need their context attached:
| Evaluation | Reported result | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI classifier, 2023 | On its English challenge set, OpenAI said the retired classifier labeled 26% of AI-written text “likely AI-written” and mislabeled human-written text 9% of the time. | This is a result for one classifier and evaluation set, not a current estimate for all detectors. OpenAI said the classifier was very unreliable below 1,000 characters and removed it on July 20, 2023 because of its low accuracy. OpenAI’s announcement. |
| Turnitin, 2023 vendor update | After running 800,000 pre-ChatGPT writing samples through its service, Turnitin reported under 1% document-level false positives for human-written documents where the tool indicated over 20% AI, and approximately 4% sentence-level false positives. | These are different measures: one concerns documents above a stated threshold, the other sentences. They cannot be compared as if they were one rate. Turnitin said lab and real-world results differed, false positives could not be eliminated, and metrics could change. Turnitin’s 2023 explanation. |
These examples do not establish a universal false-accusation rate. A benchmark built from clear, single-source examples may not represent mixed-authorship classroom, workplace, or publishing text.
Can a detector score prove that someone used AI?
No. A score is an indicator produced by a classifier, not authorship evidence that establishes who wrote a passage. Even the detector maker’s guidance can distinguish its product’s signal from proof: Turnitin says its AI percentage is separate from the similarity score, and neither should be mistaken for the other. Turnitin’s AI Writing Report guidance also describes potential false positives.
OpenAI explicitly cautioned that its own retired classifier “should not be used as a primary decision-making tool, but instead as a complement to other methods of determining the source of a piece of text.” OpenAI’s announcement. The same practical caution applies when interpreting other detector scores: a flag can justify questions, but it cannot settle them by itself.
Why can scores be unreliable?
Short text provides less evidence
OpenAI said its retired classifier was very unreliable below 1,000 characters. Turnitin’s 2023 update said accuracy improved with more text and raised its minimum input length from 150 to 300 words at that time. These are tool-specific, historical details—not universal minimums or guarantees. Check the current requirements for the particular product before interpreting a short sample. OpenAI; Turnitin.
Editing can change the result
Paraphrasing, translation, and other edits can alter detector outcomes. A 2023 peer-reviewed evaluation of 12 publicly available tools and two commercial systems concluded that the tools tested were neither accurate nor reliable, and found that obfuscation worsened performance. Weber-Wulff et al. (2023).
A 2026 evaluation in the Journal of Advances in Information Technology tested nine detectors across four LLM families and human controls. It reported near-perfect baseline detection for some commercial tools but substantial reductions for some tools on paraphrased or rewritten text; in some manipulated-text cases, the paper reported Turnitin at 45.7% and Grammarly at 19.0%. Those results apply to that paper’s sample, methods, and tested versions. They are not a timeless product ranking or a guarantee about an individual text. The 2026 evaluation.

Language support and versions differ
Tools do not necessarily support the same languages, models, or features. Turnitin’s documentation describes different English, Spanish, and Japanese model coverage and feature sets; availability and compatibility can depend on the product version. Check the current documentation for the exact language and version being assessed. Turnitin’s model guidance.
Study design shapes the number
A vendor’s own evaluation can provide useful information about its product, but it should be labeled as vendor-reported and not treated as an independent replication. Conversely, an independent controlled benchmark is not automatically representative of the varied, edited, or mixed-authorship text encountered in real decisions. Study date, sample construction, tool version, language, and threshold all matter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should a reader compare two or more AI detectors?
Compare like with like. A document-level false-positive rate is not the same measure as the percentage of sentences flagged, and a result on unedited English text does not establish performance on translated or paraphrased writing.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| False positives | Rate on verified human-written text, including the threshold, sample, language, and tool version. |
| False negatives | Share of known AI-written text missed, and which model and editing conditions were tested. |
| Unit measured | Whole-document classification versus sentence-level flags; keep these measures separate. |
| Language and length | Supported language and model versions, plus any minimum input length. |
| Robustness | Performance on human-edited, mixed, translated, or paraphrased text. |
| Evidence quality | Whether the test is independent or vendor-reported, when it was conducted, how the sample was built, and whether its methods can be reproduced. |
| Decision process | Whether the result is used as a prompt for review or incorrectly treated as conclusive proof. |
Comparative studies include commercial products, but the available evaluations do not establish a timeless “best” detector. Avoid ranking tools from one benchmark or assuming a high result on one test guarantees reliability in another setting. The 2023 evaluation; the 2026 evaluation.

What is a fair response to a detector flag?
If a result could affect a grade, job, or reputation, treat it as a reason to review the work and its context—not as the finding itself. A fair process can consider:
- Drafts, notes, and version history that show how the work developed.
- The assignment or task, including any applicable rules about AI assistance.
- A conversation with the writer about their process and choices.
- The detector’s language, text-length, and version limitations, alongside both possible error types.
Any decision should follow the relevant institution’s or employer’s policy and rest on the broader evidence, not a detector score alone.
