A customer referral program gives existing customers a clear way to recommend your store and connects those recommendations to purchases you can track. It can help a small ecommerce business attract customers through trusted introductions, but it does not guarantee more sales: discounts, credits, free products, and program administration all have costs. Start with a reward you can afford, a simple rule for when it is earned, and a way to measure whether referred customers make the program worthwhile.
What a customer referral program does
A referral begins when an existing customer recommends your business or products to someone who may become a customer. That can happen organically, through word of mouth, or through an incentive. A referral program formalizes the process: it makes sharing easier and gives the store a way to connect a recommendation with a resulting purchase.

That distinction matters. A private recommendation to a friend is not the same thing as a public review or endorsement. A program can encourage the former without asking customers to post claims about a product publicly.

They can reduce reliance on paid acquisition
When a customer introduces a new buyer, the store may acquire that buyer without relying solely on paid advertising. The reward is still a cost, so compare it with the margin and value of the resulting order rather than treating referral acquisition as free.
#1 Best Overall
They can bring in customers predisposed to trust the recommendation
Shopify reports that an Impact survey in 2024 found 86% of consumers consider recommendations and reviews important in purchase decisions. Shopify also attributes to Gartner’s 2024 Customer Acquisition and Growth Primer the finding that referrals bring in 43% more quality leads than other channels. These are figures Shopify attributes to those organizations; the original reports were not independently reviewed here, and the figures should not be treated as a forecast for an individual store.
They may be associated with stronger repeat behavior
Shopify describes an example from Odd Bunch, where founder and CEO Divy Ojha said the company tracked early referrals and found substantially higher six-month retention among customers who referred someone. Shopify does not publish a numerical retention ratio, so the example is not a usable benchmark or proof that referrals caused the difference.
Shopify also reports cosmetics brand Wild’s cofounder Charlie Bowes-Lyon saying 25% to 30% of Wild’s sales came through referrals. Shopify does not date that company figure; it is an example reported by Shopify, not a general expectation for small stores.

Referral program designs to compare
There is no universally best reward design. The right choice depends on what customers value, what the store can afford, and how clearly it can determine whether a referral qualifies.
| Approach | How it works | Merchant cost and trade-off | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-sided reward | The referring customer receives a reward after the referred person completes the stated qualifying action. | One reward per successful referral; the store still needs to account for reward cost and administration. | Stores that want to reward advocates without discounting the new customer’s first order. |
| Two-sided reward | The referring customer earns a reward and the new customer receives a first-purchase incentive. | Can motivate both sharing and purchase, but the store funds incentives on both sides. | Stores where a clear new-customer offer makes the recommendation easier to act on. |
| Discount or free product | A reward is delivered as a discount or product benefit. | Its cost depends on the discount, product cost, order margin, and redemption rules. | Stores whose customers value savings or a relevant product. |
| Store credit | The advocate receives credit to use on a future order. | Redemption encourages a return purchase, but the credit reduces revenue on that order. | Stores seeking to reward advocates in a way that may bring them back to shop. |
Shopify describes discounts, store credit, and free products as possible rewards, and notes that a two-sided offer can encourage sharing and purchase. It does not identify one reward as best for every business.
How to get referrals from customers
- Give customers a genuine reason to recommend you. Start with a product and customer experience people can stand behind. An incentive cannot substitute for trust or a satisfactory experience.
- Pick one qualifying event. For example, say that a referral counts when the friend completes a purchase. State whether the order must meet a minimum and what happens if it is cancelled or refunded, if those rules apply.
- Choose a reward and check its economics. Decide whether the offer is one-sided or two-sided and whether the reward is a discount, store credit, or a free product. Estimate the reward cost against the order’s value, margin, and plausible repeat purchases; do not assume a larger incentive will perform better.
- Explain the rules in plain language. Tell customers who qualifies, how to share, what purchase triggers the reward, and when and how the reward arrives. Include validity windows, usage limits, and minimum-order terms where relevant.
- Make sharing and redemption straightforward. Give customers an easy sharing route and make the new customer’s offer easy to understand and use. Unclear codes or complicated reward rules add friction.
- Review results and adjust deliberately. Track sharing, referred purchases, reward and administration costs, and referred-customer value or repeat behavior. Compare results over time and, where useful, by cohort or referral channel before changing the offer.
Set up a basic offer in Shopify
Shopify says a store can configure discount codes, validity windows, usage limits, and minimum order requirements in Shopify admin without installing a referral app. Exact navigation labels can vary as Shopify updates its interface; use the admin’s discount-code creation flow to set the offer terms.
- Choose the discount or incentive the referred customer will receive and define the purchase conditions.
- In Shopify admin, create a discount code and set its value, validity period, usage limits, and any minimum order requirement.
- Explain the code and its conditions where customers will share the referral, including the qualifying purchase and any reward for the existing customer.
- Record referrals and reward fulfillment so you can compare successful purchases with the costs of the offer and administration.
A discount code can support an offer, but by itself it does not necessarily provide a complete system for tracking advocates, attributing orders, and distributing both sides of a reward. Stores needing those functions may consider dedicated referral software.

Track the full chain from sharing to repeat behavior rather than counting only issued codes or rewards. Useful measures include:
- How many customers share an invitation or referral link.
- How many referred visitors complete a purchase.
- The cost of rewards actually issued and the time or fees needed to administer the program.
- The value and repeat-purchase behavior of referred customers, compared over an appropriate period or by cohort.
- Differences by referral channel or offer, when the store has enough data to make the comparison useful.
A store-specific break-even assessment should use its own margins, order economics, and reward costs. Shopify recommends monitoring referral metrics to optimize incentives and channels, but does not provide a validated universal profit formula or a typical return on investment. Avoid treating an increase in referrals as proof of profitable growth if reward costs or lower-margin orders offset the sales.
When referral software may help
For a small store, a basic discount offer may be enough to test whether customers will share. Software becomes more relevant when the business needs tracked referral links, attribution, or automated reward distribution. Shopify names Conjured Referrals, LoyaltyLion, and Stamped Loyalty & Referrals as examples. These are not a comparative ranking, and current prices, platform compatibility, features, and terms are not established here.
Before choosing an app, compare the capabilities that affect the actual program: tracking, reward delivery, eligibility and abuse controls, reporting, platform fit, and current pricing. A tool is useful only if it reduces the administration burden or enables tracking the store cannot manage reliably on its own.
Trust and U.S. disclosure considerations
For U.S. stores, consult the Federal Trade Commission’s current guidance on endorsements and reviews before asking customers to make public promotional claims. Do not encourage dishonest or misleading reviews. A private referral to a friend and a public endorsement or review are different forms of communication, and the store should make any incentive terms clear to participants. The FTC guidance is U.S.-specific; requirements in other markets are not covered here.

What are the three types of referrals?
There is no single official three-type taxonomy established for ecommerce referral programs. A practical distinction is between organic word of mouth, incentivized private referrals, and public endorsements or reviews. The first two concern recommendations that may introduce a buyer; public endorsements and reviews are a separate category and should not be treated as interchangeable with a private referral.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do small ecommerce businesses need a referral app?
No. Shopify says stores can configure discount codes, validity windows, usage limits, and minimum order requirements in Shopify admin without installing a referral app. Dedicated software may be useful when tracked links, attribution, or automated reward delivery are needed.
Should I reward the existing customer, the new customer, or both?
A one-sided reward limits the offer to the advocate; a two-sided offer rewards the advocate and gives the new customer a first-purchase incentive. Shopify notes that rewarding both sides can encourage sharing and purchase, but the store must account for the added cost.
Can a referral program guarantee more sales?
No. A program creates a way to share and track recommendations, but results depend on whether customers share, referred visitors buy, and the resulting order economics cover rewards and administration.
