A 2018 molecular-trap study showed how light can steer one reversible chemical reaction toward either bond formation or bond cleavage. The researchers coupled a light-driven change in a carbonyl compound’s reactivity to a reversible reaction with a nitrogen-containing partner. Red or blue illumination could favor opposite outcomes—even when the ordinary thermal equilibrium favored the other side. The result applies to this specific system, not to photoswitches or reversible reactions in general.
How the molecular trap steers a reversible reaction
In an ordinary reversible reaction, reactants and products tend toward a thermal equilibrium: a mixture whose composition reflects the relative thermodynamic stability of the states. Changing that balance usually requires changing the chemical conditions or supplying energy in a way that favors one direction.

The system described by Eindhoven University of Technology researchers couples the reaction to a photoswitchable carbonyl electrophile and a nitrogen-based nucleophile. Light drives tautomerization—a rearrangement of atoms and bonds within a molecule—that changes the electrophile’s reactivity. Depending on the illumination, the system can activate reactants to favor intermolecular bond formation or help remove products through bond scission. The institutional research record describes this as a light-driven molecular trap for manipulating dynamic covalent systems: Eindhoven University of Technology Research Portal.
The researchers report that red and blue light can produce selective, nearly quantitative bond formation or scission, even when the underlying condensation/hydrolysis equilibrium is thermodynamically disfavored. The accessible abstract does not specify an exact percentage, so “nearly quantitative” should not be translated into a particular yield. Nor does this result establish that other reactions can be driven as effectively: the research record.

- THE ULTIMATE HOME CHEMISTRY SET FOR SERIOUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS — Perform more than 333 hands-on experiments organized into 27 chapters covering inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and electrochemistry. Designed and manufactured in Germany to the rigorous EN 71-4 safety standard, CHEM C3000 is the most advanced chemistry kit in the Thames & Kosmos CHEM family and excellent preparation for high school chemistry.
- 192-PAGE FULL-COLOR EXPERIMENT MANUAL — Far more than instructions, this richly illustrated lab manual reads like a great science book. Clear step-by-step procedures and thorough scientific explanations introduce chemical equations, atomic structure, chemical bonding, the periodic table, acids and bases, redox reactions, electrolysis, halogens, sulfur compounds, ammonia, organic chemistry, esters, fats and soaps, carbohydrates, and proteins.
- REAL LAB EQUIPMENT FOR AUTHENTIC EXPERIMENTS — Outfit a true home laboratory with glass test tubes, beakers, an Erlenmeyer flask, a tripod stand and alcohol burner, evaporating dish, wire mesh, dropper pipettes, plastic syringe, funnel, filter paper, stoppers, glass and rubber tubing, carbon electrode, copper and zinc sheets, alligator-clip wires, light bulb and socket, test tube stand, and protective safety goggles.
- A COMPLETE SET OF CHEMICALS FOR DOZENS OF REAL REACTIONS — Investigate genuine chemistry across the full periodic spectrum: inorganic reactions, oxidation and reduction, electrolysis, acid–base chemistry, chromatography, and organic chemistry. A carefully selected chemical inventory (full list in product description) lets students observe real reactions in action, not simulations. A few common household additions (clearly listed in the manual) extend the experiment count further.
- AGES 12+ WITH ADULT SUPERVISION — Adult supervision is required throughout. Thorough safety rules, first-aid guidance, GHS labeling, and waste-disposal instructions are integrated throughout the manual so families can experiment confidently. An ideal gift for curious students, homeschoolers, and aspiring chemists ready to go beyond beginner kits.
Why illumination can shift the balance
The key is that the illuminated system is not governed only by the thermal stability of reactants and products. Light changes the molecular state and, with it, which chemical pathway is favored. Switching the illumination can therefore change whether the coupled process favors making or breaking the intermolecular bond.
This is different from claiming that light makes the thermodynamic equilibrium disappear. Under continued illumination, photoswitching commonly produces a photostationary state: a dynamic balance in which photochemical steps in both directions can continue. Its composition depends on how the molecules absorb at that wavelength and on the quantum yields of the competing reactions. That general explanation comes from a 2017 review, not from a reported measurement of the molecular trap itself: “Photoswitchable molecules as key ingredients to drive systems away from the global thermodynamic minimum”.

What the report establishes—and what it does not
The research team—Michael Kathan, Fabian Eisenreich, Christoph Jurissek, Andre Dallmann, Johannes Gurke, and Stefan Hecht—reported a specific light-controlled approach to bidirectional manipulation of a dynamic covalent reaction. Chemistry World’s 2018 coverage quoted team leader Stefan Hecht: “If you are at thermodynamic minimum there is no life,” framing the work’s broader motivation as using energy input to move systems away from a minimum: Chemistry World.

The accessible descriptions do not give the molecular trap’s precise red and blue wavelengths, substrate-specific yields, solvent, concentrations, illumination intensity, or full experimental protocol. They support an explanation of the mechanism and reported outcome, but not a reproduction-ready laboratory procedure.

How this differs from other visible-light switches
Other photoswitch studies illustrate different uses of light; their measurements should not be attributed to the molecular trap.
| System | What light switches | Reported result | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2017 hemiindigo derivatives | The molecule’s E/Z isomer state | The study reports more than 90% E isomer after 470–530 nm irradiation, 99% Z isomer after 590–680 nm irradiation, and half-lives up to 83 years at 25 °C. | These figures describe the investigated hemiindigo derivatives, not reaction yields or wavelengths for the molecular trap. See the PubMed record for “Hemiindigo: Highly Bistable Photoswitching at the Biooptical Window”. |
| 2023 diaryl-hemiindigo system | A multi-state switch responsive to visible light, pH, and heat | The study explores four-state switching, chemical fueling, and inscription in transparent polymers. | It is a separate photoswitch and materials application, not the coupled bond-formation and bond-scission system. See the Nature Communications article. |
These examples cannot be ranked directly against the molecular trap: they switch different properties and were not compared head-to-head under shared conditions.
