Recycling robots sort items by combining sensor readings with software that classifies and locates each object, then directs a physical separator to move it into a selected stream. Visible cameras can show an object’s color, shape and surface; near-infrared (NIR) or other spectral sensors can add clues about its material. A robotic arm is one possible separator, but industrial lines may instead use pneumatic valves or other mechanisms. The exact combination depends on the facility and the waste stream.
How an automated recycling sorter works
A sorting line has two distinct jobs: decide what an item appears to be, and physically separate it. Sensors and classification software handle the first job. A robot arm, air valve or another actuator handles the second. The distinction matters: recognizing an item does not guarantee that the system can reach, grip or eject it successfully.

One facility layout described by Conestoga Applied Research includes a feeder, conveyor, camera enclosure, lighting, a camera line and pneumatic valves. Other systems use different arrangements. For example, the ANASA research system paired an optical subsystem using RGB and NIR cameras with a robotic subsystem that separated candidate items into bins. Its developers reported deployment in two Greek waste-management industrial units. These examples illustrate possible designs, not a standard blueprint for every recycling plant.

Waste travels through a sensing area, often on a conveyor. A visible camera captures the scene, and image-recognition software detects objects and estimates their positions. Position is essential: the system needs more than a category label if it is to direct a separator toward a particular item.

2. Sensors provide clues about appearance and material
The system evaluates the signals available to it. An RGB camera records visible appearance, while NIR or other spectral sensors measure information associated with reflected wavelengths. Software can combine those observations and assign an item to one of the categories used for the target waste stream.
3. Software sends a sorting decision to the separator
The classifier’s output can include an object category and its location. The control system uses that information to trigger the relevant separation action. In the ANASA example, optical sensing generated candidate targets before the robotic subsystem moved objects into bins. In a line using pneumatic valves, a valve can provide the physical ejection instead. The sensing and sorting decisions therefore need to be coordinated with the mechanism and the moving material.
What each sensor contributes
No single sensor answers every question. A camera may be good at showing visible features but unable to establish what a visually similar item is made of. Spectral measurements can add material-related evidence, but their usefulness depends on the material and the conditions in the line.

| Technology | What it observes | What it can contribute | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| RGB or visible camera | Color, shape, labels and surface appearance | Detects visible objects, helps estimate their positions and can classify visual categories | Appearance is not a reliable guarantee of composition; similar-looking objects can be made from different materials. NIST’s explainer discusses machine learning and plastic signals. |
| NIR spectroscopy or imaging | Reflected near-infrared wavelengths | Material-related reflectance patterns can help identify plastics and distinguish them from paper, glass, wood or metal | Not every material or surface provides a useful signal. The European Commission’s CORDIS project information describes spectral sensing. |
| Multispectral or hyperspectral imaging | Information across multiple wavelength bands | Can add detail or complement conventional images and NIR readings when one signal is inadequate | Its role and demonstrated performance depend on the specific system. Leibniz University Hannover describes a SWIR hyperspectral research approach for a known NIR limitation. |
| Machine-learning software | Patterns in camera images and sensor readings | Maps observations to the categories a system is designed to recognize | Useful decisions depend on the training examples, signal quality and categories available for the particular waste stream. |
NIR does not identify a package by reading a universal recycling symbol. It measures reflected spectral information that can be associated with material composition. The software interprets those measurements alongside other available signals. This is why a system combining a camera with spectral sensing can have more evidence than one relying on visible appearance alone, while still being subject to sensor and classification limits.
Why visual recognition alone can mis-sort materials
Computer vision can recognize what an object looks like, but a visual category is not always the same as a material category. A soda bottle and a food container may look similar while being made from different plastics. Labels, surface appearance and shape can all help with object recognition without proving the item’s composition.
If the target decision depends on the material rather than the visible object type, relying on appearance can send lookalikes into the same stream or classify them incorrectly. Spectral sensing can provide additional material-related information, but it is not a universal fix: the appropriate sensor depends on the material stream and operating conditions. The system’s decision categories also matter. Software can only select among the distinctions it has been designed and trained to make.

Why carbon-black plastics are difficult to identify
Dark carbon-black plastics are a known challenge for conventional NIR sorting. Carbon black absorbs NIR radiation strongly, so the reflected signal that would help identify the material may not be available in a useful form. When that signal is weak or missing, a conventional NIR classifier has less material information to work with.
A project at Leibniz University Hannover describes investigating a short-wave infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral approach combined with conventional NIR to address this problem. This is a research direction, not evidence that every facility can now identify or recover all carbon-black plastics. The broader lesson is that a sensor’s performance depends on how the target material interacts with the part of the spectrum being measured.
Recognition is only half the sorting problem
After classification, a system still has to separate the item from the material moving around it. A robot arm must be able to reach and grip its target; another design may use a pneumatic valve or a different separator. The sensing system’s location estimate and the actuator’s timing and physical action must work together for the item to reach the intended bin.

The available examples establish that both robotic separation and pneumatic ejection are used in described systems, but they do not establish one universal gripper, picking rate or success rate. A correct classification can still fail to produce a successful pick or ejection if an item is inaccessible or cannot be gripped. Likewise, a mechanism that separates objects does not by itself establish that they were sorted into the right material category.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare recycling-sorting systems
A useful comparison starts with the task each system is designed to perform. An industrial deployment, a research prototype and a proposed sensing method are different kinds of evidence; they should not be treated as interchangeable proof of performance.
| Comparison question | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| What does the system sense? | RGB or visible images, NIR, SWIR, hyperspectral or multispectral data, or a fused combination | Different signals reveal different properties; a visible image may show appearance while spectral readings can add material-related information. |
| Which waste stream is targeted? | For example, post-consumer plastics, electronic waste or mixed bulk materials | A classifier and its categories are suited to a particular sorting task, not automatically to every kind of waste. |
| How does it separate items? | Robotic picking, pneumatic ejection or another mechanism | The actuator affects how an identified item is physically moved and introduces constraints beyond recognition. |
| Which difficult materials are in scope? | Dark or carbon-black plastics, labels, mixed construction and visually similar items | Known sensing limits can affect whether the system can make the distinctions the facility needs. |
| What is the evidence level? | Industrial deployment, a research system or an investigated method | A project description or prototype does not establish general commercial throughput, accuracy or cost. |
For example, the ANASA record describes an RGB-and-NIR optical subsystem paired with a robotic sorting subsystem and reports deployment in two Greek waste-management industrial units. That is evidence about that system and those deployments; it is not a universal performance figure. The SWIR hyperspectral approach described by Leibniz University Hannover is an investigated response to the carbon-black problem, not equivalent evidence of broad facility deployment.

What the available figures do—and do not—establish
The cited system descriptions do not provide a verified, general sorting-rate percentage, accuracy figure, throughput comparison or cost comparison that can be applied across facilities. A number reported for a particular material stream, sensor arrangement or test would need those conditions to be meaningful; it should not be presented as the performance of recycling robots in general.
That limitation does not prevent a useful technical comparison. Sensor type, target material, separation mechanism, difficult materials in scope and evidence level are all concrete criteria. But a facility operator assessing a specific system would need system-specific performance data for the relevant waste stream and operating conditions rather than a generic figure.
The key distinction: identifying an item versus proving its composition
A recycling sorter does not simply see an object and know what it is. It receives signals, estimates where an item is, and uses software to map the observations to a category. Visible cameras help describe appearance; NIR and other spectral measurements can add clues tied to composition. The classification then guides a separate physical action.

More kinds of sensor data can help when one view is ambiguous, but material signals may be weak or unavailable for some items, and software remains constrained by its examples and categories. Even a sound classification must be followed by a successful physical separation. The right design is therefore the one suited to the facility’s material stream and sorting objective—not a single sensor or robot layout assumed to work everywhere.
