Rebuilding a worn hydraulic cylinder can avoid making a replacement for the whole component: a shop can retain serviceable parts of the returned cylinder, restore worn surfaces and replace only components that inspection shows are no longer usable. Repeated across a fleet, those avoided replacements can add up to tonnes of raw material. There is no reliable universal figure for material saved per cylinder; it depends on the model, its condition and what the rebuild replaces.
Where the material savings come from
A hydraulic cylinder is a substantial assembly. When it is returned for rebuilding, the provider can inspect it, keep parts that remain serviceable, restore certain worn parts and replace wear components or damaged parts. That is different from manufacturing a complete new cylinder, although the rebuild still consumes materials for replacements and uses energy for inspection and restoration.

The exact work varies by cylinder and program. MacGregor’s September 2025 cylinder exchange-program document describes rechroming piston rods and replacing seals, stuffing boxes and spherical bearings. These are examples of that provider’s process, not a universal procedure. MacGregor’s program document

That study-specific result illustrates how retaining a heavy core can reduce demand for new material; it does not mean every rebuild replaces exactly 2% of a cylinder. What the reported numbers actually measure
Several figures help show why remanufacturing can matter, but they describe different programs and boundaries. They should not be treated as interchangeable estimates of material saved by rebuilding one cylinder.
| Reported figure | What it applies to | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| About 2% of component weight in replacement parts | One hydraulic-cylinder remanufacturing process modeled in Jun et al.’s 2019 study. | A universal replacement rate or mass saving for every cylinder. |
| Approximately 80% of existing cylinder material reusable | MacGregor’s September 2025 program document, a company-specific claim surfaced as a Scribd-hosted copy. | An independently established industry-wide reuse rate. |
| Approximately 5,200 tonnes of raw-material consumption reduced in 2024 | CNH’s global refurbishment of used components across its activities, as reported in a 2025 release. | A cylinder-only result. |
| At least 470,000 tonnes of virgin material avoided per year | Environment and Climate Change Canada’s estimate based on 2019 activity across analyzed Canadian value-retention processes. | A result for hydraulic cylinders or a current annual measurement. |
| 28.5% of new-product global-warming-potential burden and 25.9% of new-product primary-energy burden, on average | A 2022 harmonized meta-analysis of 20 life-cycle assessment papers covering 11 mechanical-product types; the analysis excluded use and end-of-life stages. | Cylinder-specific environmental ratios. |

Why fleet-scale savings can reach tonnes
The arithmetic is straightforward: retaining some material in each returned core avoids replacing that material with newly manufactured parts. If a fleet rebuilds many cylinders, the avoided material across those jobs can accumulate. But the total depends on how many units are rebuilt, their sizes and condition, the mass retained, replacement parts and process losses.

CNH’s approximately 5,200-tonne figure demonstrates that large refurbishment programs can report substantial aggregate raw-material reductions. It covers used components generally, not hydraulic cylinders alone, so it cannot be used as a per-cylinder benchmark. Similarly, Canada’s estimated annual avoidance across value-retention processes is a national cross-sector figure, not a cylinder-rebuilding total.

Environmental benefit depends on the comparison
Keeping material in service is a resource benefit, but a complete environmental comparison also depends on what is repaired or replaced and which stages are counted. In the 2022 meta-analysis, remanufactured products averaged 28.5% of new-product global-warming-potential burden and 25.9% of new-product primary-energy burden under the study’s harmonized assumptions, excluding use and end-of-life stages. The sample spans multiple mechanical-product types; these percentages should not be presented as hydraulic-cylinder results.
Manufacturers may also publish their own material-saving figures. For example, Liebherr states that its remanufacturing can save up to 75% of raw materials. That is a company claim about its process generally, not an independent cylinder-specific result. Liebherr on remanufacturing

How to judge a rebuild against replacement
A material-saving claim is most useful when it is tied to a particular cylinder and a defined replacement alternative. Before choosing a rebuild, ask the provider for the details that affect both suitability and the environmental claim.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Core condition: Can the returned cylinder be inspected and safely restored? Exchange programs may reject cores that fail their acceptance conditions.
- Work scope: Which parts will be retained, restored or replaced, and what performance standard and warranty apply? Cat Reman lists hydraulic cylinders and cylinder groups, but coverage and terms vary by product and market. Cat Reman hydraulic parts
- Core and cost terms: Does the quoted price or savings depend on returning an eligible core, and what credit or charge applies? Cat Reman specifically notes that savings depend on core return and that core conditions apply.
- Turnaround and logistics: Confirm inspection time, shipping arrangements and exchange availability with the provider; there is no universal turnaround advantage established here.
- Material evidence: For a quantified claim, request retained and replaced mass, or a product-specific environmental comparison against a new cylinder.
When a cylinder-specific figure is defensible
To calculate a credible mass saving for a particular rebuild, the comparison needs at least the cylinder model and mass, the amount of material retained and replaced, any process losses, and a clearly defined new-part alternative. Without those details, a provider reuse percentage, an academic result for one process or an aggregate corporate total cannot establish how many kilograms or tonnes a particular rebuild saves.
