An RCA-to-HDMI converter is an active device: it takes analog composite video and stereo audio from an older source, processes them, and sends a digital signal to an HDMI display. The RCA leads carry the source’s picture and sound; a separate power supply runs the conversion electronics and HDMI output. The exact supply and supported formats depend on the converter model.
What the RCA connections carry
On the usual three-plug composite connection, yellow carries video, while red and white carry the right and left audio channels. These are analog signals. The converter’s RCA sockets are inputs for the legacy source; its HDMI socket is the output for the TV or monitor.

Direction is important. For a VCR, DVD player, or game console with RCA output going to an HDMI display, choose a unit explicitly labeled RCA, AV, or composite input to HDMI output. An HDMI-to-RCA converter performs the reverse conversion and will not serve this setup.
How conversion works—and what it cannot do
The converter samples and processes the incoming analog video and audio, then formats them as an HDMI-compatible digital output. Product documentation confirms this overall analog-to-digital function, but does not establish a single internal circuit design, chip, sampling rate, or deinterlacing method shared by all converters. Those details vary or may not be published.

Some models offer an HDMI output mode such as 720p or 1080p. That output format makes the signal usable by an HDMI display; it does not recover picture detail missing from the original composite recording. Adafruit cautions that its adapter “doesn’t magically clean up NTSC signals and make them 720p/1080p.” Adafruit’s product page also notes that the converted picture retains the input’s quality and resolution.
Why the converter needs separate power
The RCA plugs provide the source’s audio and video signals, not the power needed to run the conversion and generate an HDMI output. The converter therefore uses a separate power input for its active electronics. The Techly IIDATA SPDIF-71 manual specifies DC 5 V/0.5 A, 2 W consumption, and a micro-USB power port; these are specifications for that model, not a universal requirement. Consult the Techly manual or the documentation for your own unit for its required voltage, current, and connector.

Connect an RCA source to an HDMI display
- Connect the source’s yellow video plug and red/white audio plugs to the matching RCA inputs on the converter.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the converter’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the display.
- Connect the power supply specified for that converter. The Techly manual’s setup instruction is: “Plug the power supply into the device to get started.”
- Turn on the source and display, then select the HDMI input used by the converter. If the converter offers an output-resolution choice, select a mode supported by the display, such as 720p or 1080p where available.
Formats, output, and aspect ratio to check
Specifications differ across products, so verify the source’s video standard and the display’s needs before choosing a converter. Representative product documentation illustrates the variation:

Output refresh rates and the full list of supported input standards can vary by model; use the linked documentation rather than assuming the examples apply to every converter. Also check how 4:3 material is handled. Adafruit warns that its adapter does not automatically letterbox 4:3 output, so the image may appear stretched unless scaling is adjusted on the display.

Choosing the right converter
- Direction: Confirm that the unit accepts RCA/AV/composite input and outputs HDMI.
- Input standard: Match the converter’s supported standard to the source, particularly if it uses a regional format such as PAL-M, PAL-N, or SECAM.
- Output modes: Check which HDMI resolutions and refresh rates the converter offers and whether the display accepts them.
- Power: Confirm the exact voltage, current rating, connector, and whether a supply or cable is included. Do not assume every 5 V model uses the same cable or current rating.
- Audio and image shape: Verify that audio is carried through HDMI and consider whether the converter or display can preserve the intended 4:3 presentation.
If there is no picture or the image is unclear
No output
Check that the converter has its specified power, the RCA and HDMI connections are secure, and the source is actually producing AV. Then confirm that the display is set to the HDMI input connected to the converter. These checks follow the troubleshooting guidance in the Techly manual.
Snowy or unclear picture
The Techly manual recommends trying another HDMI cable or a shorter one for a snowy or unclear picture. That is model-specific advice rather than a guaranteed fix; source condition, video-standard compatibility, connections, and the equipment in the signal path can also affect the result.
