An RBI repo-rate cut does not automatically reduce every borrower’s EMI on the announcement date. The effect depends on whether the loan is fixed or floating, which benchmark the agreement uses, when it resets, and whether the lender changes the EMI, the remaining tenor or both. Covered new floating-rate bank retail loans, including housing and auto loans, must use an eligible external benchmark and reset at least once every three months; older loans and other products can follow different rules.
Why a repo-rate cut may not change your loan rate immediately
The repo rate is one possible benchmark, not the benchmark for every loan. A floating-rate loan’s agreement identifies its reference benchmark and spread—the margin added to that benchmark. Eligible external benchmarks also include certain government Treasury-bill yields and other market rates published by FBIL. The RBI’s external benchmark directions require covered loans to reset at least once every three months, but a reset is not necessarily made on the day the RBI announces a policy change.

For a borrower, the practical result depends on the loan’s benchmark, contractual spread, next reset date, lender type and product vintage. Even when a benchmark falls, the rate change passed through to an individual loan need not match the repo-rate move: check the revised rate in the lender’s communication and the terms governing your spread.
Which loans are covered—and which may work differently?
New floating-rate bank retail loans
RBI requires scheduled commercial banks to link covered new floating-rate personal or retail loans, including housing and auto loans, to an eligible external benchmark. A loan linked to the repo rate may therefore respond through its contractual reset mechanism. The rule does not mean every car or personal loan in the market is repo-linked: lender category, origination date, product type and the agreement all matter.

Older MCLR-linked loans
An MCLR-linked loan follows a different timetable. RBI says the MCLR prevailing at first disbursement applies until the loan’s next reset date, regardless of interim changes in MCLR. Reset periodicity is one year or less, with the schedule set out in the loan contract. A repo-rate change consequently need not affect an MCLR-linked borrower at the same time as an external-benchmark-linked borrower. See the RBI provisions on MCLR.
Loan benchmarks have shifted over time. In a 2021 bulletin, RBI reported that MCLR-linked loans’ share of outstanding floating-rate loans had fallen from 83.6% to 60.2% over the period discussed there. That is historical context, not a measure of today’s loan portfolio. RBI Bulletin, 2021.

Fixed-rate loans and other personal loans
A fixed-rate loan does not ordinarily reprice simply because the repo rate changes; check the contract for the applicable terms. For floating-rate personal loans, do not assume the external-benchmark rule applies to every product. RBI’s 2023 EMI-reset instructions cover equated periodic instalment-based personal loans whether linked to an external or internal benchmark, so a borrower may have reset options even when the loan is not repo-linked. RBI’s FAQ on floating-rate EMI personal loans explains the scope and borrower protections.
What changes when the rate resets?
A rate reset can change the EMI, the remaining repayment period, or both. The lender’s calculation and the choices available under the loan terms determine the result; a repo-rate move by itself is not enough information to calculate the rupee change. A useful calculation needs the outstanding principal, remaining term, actual current and revised loan rates, reset timing, and whether the EMI or tenor is held constant.

RBI’s January 10, 2025 FAQ says that when rates reset for a class of borrowers in a category such as home loans because the reference benchmark has increased, the regulated entity must offer options. These include a higher EMI, a longer repayment period with the EMI unchanged, a combination of the two, switching to a fixed rate under the lender’s board-approved policy, and partial or full prepayment. Switching charges may apply and must be disclosed transparently.
What to check with your lender
- Read the loan agreement or latest statement. Identify whether the rate is fixed or floating, the benchmark and spread, the reset date or schedule, and any conditions for changing the spread.
- Check the lender’s rate-change notice. Confirm the revised rate that applies to your loan and when it takes effect. Do not infer your personal rate solely from an RBI announcement.
- Request the revised repayment schedule. Compare the new EMI, number of EMIs remaining, total time to repayment and interest remaining under the proposed treatment.
- Ask for the available reset choices and their costs. If considering fixed-rate conversion or prepayment, obtain the applicable policy, charges and terms before deciding.
- Compare offers using your actual balance and schedule. A balance transfer or other switch is worth assessing only after including fees, the new rate and its reset terms, and any costs on the existing loan.
For covered borrowers, RBI’s FAQ describes disclosures at sanction, communication of rate increases during the loan, and quarterly statements showing principal and interest recovered, EMI, EMIs remaining and the annualised rate. If your notice or statement does not make the applicable rate and schedule clear, ask the lender for those details in writing.

How to choose between a higher EMI, longer tenor or prepayment
There is no universal best option based on the repo rate alone. Compare the revised EMI against your budget, then compare remaining interest and repayment duration using the lender’s actual schedule. A longer tenor can keep the EMI unchanged but extends repayment; a higher EMI changes the monthly commitment; prepayment uses cash now and must be assessed against its terms and charges. Fixed-rate conversion depends on the lender’s policy and may have a cost.

RBI rate snapshot: check the date
RBI’s official rate-page snapshot recorded the policy repo rate at 5.25% as of 1:00 pm on July 29, 2026. That dated figure is not verified as the rate on October 4, 2026, so it should not be treated as today’s rate. Check the RBI policy-rate page for a dated official update before using a current figure.
