That does not mean every home-loan EMI or bank-deposit return changes by the same amount, or on the same day. The effect depends on your loan’s benchmark and reset terms, your lender’s decisions, and the terms of your deposit.
How a repo-rate hike reaches borrowers and savers
The repo rate is a policy rate, not a rate that is automatically added to every loan or deposit. RBI describes monetary transmission as a process that can affect money-market rates, bond yields, bank lending and deposit rates, and asset prices. It takes months in many cases and sometimes more than a year.

For a borrower, the key details are the loan’s reference benchmark, the lender’s spread over it, the reset date, and the repayment terms. For a saver, banks have flexibility in setting deposit rates, so a policy change does not guarantee a matching change to a savings account or fixed deposit.
Will my home-loan EMI increase after RBI hikes rates?
It may, if your floating-rate loan’s benchmark rises and the change reaches your account under its reset terms. But a 25-basis-point repo-rate increase is not a promise of a 25-basis-point increase in your personal loan rate or EMI. The timing and effect depend on the benchmark and contract.

Check what your loan is linked to
Since October 1, 2019, scheduled commercial banks other than regional rural banks have been required to link new floating-rate personal or retail loans to an external benchmark, such as the RBI policy repo rate or specified Treasury-bill rates. Banks may set a spread over the benchmark within RBI rules and the loan contract. Not every home loan is floating or directly linked to the repo rate, so check your sanction letter or latest loan statement rather than assuming it is.
Understand what may change at a reset
When the benchmark on a floating-rate loan rises, the lender may raise your EMI, extend the number of EMIs while keeping the EMI unchanged, or use a combination of both. A change may not appear immediately after the MPC announcement: the loan’s reset schedule and the time needed for rate transmission matter.

RBI guidance says the lender must communicate an increase in EMI or loan tenor resulting from an external-benchmark change. It also requires quarterly statements to show, at minimum, principal and interest recovered to date, the EMI amount, EMIs remaining, and the annualised interest rate for the tenor.
What can I do when my floating home-loan rate resets?
RBI’s reset FAQ says regulated entities must offer borrowers choices when a reference-benchmark reset raises rates. The options apply to existing borrowers with equated-instalment personal loans linked to internal or external benchmarks. Their effects depend on the lender’s offer and your loan details.

| Option | What changes | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Increase the EMI | Your scheduled monthly payment rises; the repayment period may remain shorter than if the EMI were held steady. | Whether the higher monthly payment fits your budget and how the revised schedule affects total interest. |
| Extend the number of EMIs | The EMI can remain unchanged while repayment runs for more installments. | The longer repayment period and its effect on total interest. |
| Combine a higher EMI and a longer repayment period | Both the monthly payment and the number of installments may change. | The revised monthly cash flow, remaining tenure, and total interest shown in the lender’s schedule. |
| Switch to a fixed rate for the remaining loan period | The loan moves to the fixed-rate terms offered under the lender’s board-approved policy. | The offered fixed rate, its terms, and any switching or administrative charges. |
| Partly or fully prepay | You pay down some or all of the outstanding loan during its remaining tenure. | Available funds, the revised repayment schedule, and any applicable prepayment charges. |
RBI’s FAQ does not designate one option as best for every borrower. Ask the lender for an updated repayment schedule under each option you are considering. Compare monthly affordability, remaining tenure, total interest, switching or prepayment charges, and the terms and certainty of any fixed-rate offer. Switching and related service or administrative charges may apply; the lender must disclose applicable charges transparently. Check the reset notice, sanction letter, and current charge schedule before deciding.
Will savings-account and fixed-deposit rates go up?
A repo-rate hike may influence savings and term-deposit offers over time, but deposit rates are deregulated: banks have flexibility in setting them. The timing and size of any change vary by bank and product. The policy move does not guarantee that a savings-account rate or an existing fixed deposit will rise by 25 basis points, or that a bank will change rates immediately.

Before moving savings or opening a deposit, check the bank’s current posted rate, the deposit tenure and withdrawal terms, and whether the quoted rate applies to existing balances or only new deposits. A new offer may not change the return on a fixed deposit you already hold; check its specific terms. No comparable bank-by-bank schedule of post-October 7, 2026 deposit rates is established here, so verify the current rate directly with your bank.

- Identify the benchmark. Look in your sanction letter or loan statement for the reference rate and the lender’s spread.
- Find the reset date and revised rate. Use the lender’s reset communication to confirm when the change applies and what rate it sets out.
- Check the repayment effect. Confirm the revised EMI, remaining installments, annualised interest rate, and principal and interest recovered to date in your quarterly statement.
- Request schedules for the available options. Ask the lender to show the repayment period and total-interest effect for each choice, along with applicable switching or prepayment charges.
- Compare the numbers with your cash flow. Choose only after weighing monthly affordability, total interest, remaining tenure, charges, and any fixed-rate terms offered.
The RBI MPC’s October 7, 2026 release announced the move to 5.50%. An RBI current-rates dashboard snapshot taken at 1:00 p.m. on October 6 showed 5.25%, but that earlier snapshot predates and is superseded by the MPC decision.
