Physics-based structured-light simulation aims to make synthetic depth data more like what a real camera captures by simulating the projected gray-code patterns and the reconstruction process—not just rendering ideal object geometry. In a 2024 ICRA paper, Kaixin Bai and colleagues use ray tracing to generate RGB and depth images with labels for robotics perception and grasping tasks. Their results describe a promising, application-specific approach, not proof that synthetic data removes the sim-to-real gap for every sensor or factory.
Why ideal 3D renders can miss structured-light artifacts
A structured-light camera projects known patterns onto a scene and uses the observed patterns to reconstruct depth. If a simulator renders an object’s shape but skips pattern projection and depth reconstruction, its output may omit effects tied to how the sensor measures the scene. Training on such idealized depth can leave a perception model facing different data when it encounters a physical camera.

Bai, Zhang, Chen, Wan, and Zhang describe this practical challenge in their ICRA 2024 paper, “Close the Sim2real Gap via Physically-based Structured Light Synthetic Data Simulation.” They note that data collection and annotation remain obstacles in industrial robotics. The authors summarize the problem this way: “Despite the substantial progress in deep learning, its adoption in industrial robotics projects remains limited, primarily due to challenges in data acquisition and labeling.” Read the paper on arXiv.
How the ray-traced simulator works
- Project gray-code patterns. The simulator places structured-light patterns into the virtual scene, reflecting the camera’s measurement process rather than treating depth as a direct export of object geometry.
- Simulate light transport. Using Blender and NVIDIA OptiX ray tracing, it models pattern illumination and scene interactions.
- Reconstruct depth. The projected patterns are decoded and reconstructed into synthetic depth images. This can produce depth data with structured-light noise and other sensor-related artifacts.
- Generate RGB and labels. The pipeline also creates RGB images and ground-truth annotations, including object poses, boxes, and segmentation labels, for training and evaluation.
The key idea is to simulate the measurement pipeline: illumination, scene interaction, and reconstruction. The target is gray-code structured-light cameras; the paper does not establish that its simulator covers every structured-light technique or sensor.

What the authors evaluated
The paper reports using the generated data for object detection, instance segmentation, and robotic grasping, with evaluation in industrial grasping-related scenarios and a real-world robotic demonstration. These applications make the work relevant to robotics teams that need annotated RGBD data, but they do not establish equal transfer across all object classes, materials, factories, or cameras.
The authors’ stated motivation is to reduce the burden of acquiring and labeling data while narrowing a sim-to-real gap. The reported applications are evidence for a task-specific pipeline; they are not a guarantee of improved performance in an unrelated deployment. The publication is listed as an ICRA 2024 conference paper by Kaixin Bai, Lei Zhang, Zhaopeng Chen, Fang Wan, and Jianwei Zhang, on pages 17035–17041, DOI 10.1109/ICRA57147.2024.10611401. What the paper does—and does not—show about ray tracing
The authors focus on the benefits of ray tracing for simulating projected patterns and light paths. They do not report a controlled comparison with rasterization or another rendering method, so this paper alone cannot establish that ray tracing is more accurate, faster, or more efficient than those alternatives. It also does not provide a named percentage improvement or benchmark figure that supports a general performance claim.
For teams assessing the method, the useful questions are whether a simulator models the target camera’s pattern illumination and depth reconstruction, whether it produces the RGB, depth, and annotations needed by the task, and whether evaluation includes real-world data for the intended application. Compute requirements and rendering throughput also matter, but should be measured for the team’s own scenes and hardware rather than inferred from this paper.
