A planned rail closure removes or restricts a section of track while engineering work takes place. Depending on the route and timetable, trains may be diverted, retimed, terminated early or cancelled; some journeys instead use a rail replacement bus or coach. The exact effect is specific to the route and travel date, so check the live journey plan rather than assuming every closure has the same impact.
What changes when a section of track closes?
Rail services need an available path over the track they are scheduled to use. When engineering work makes that section unavailable, the railway has to change the service plan. The response may include timetable changes, a diversion, an earlier or different terminating station, cancellations, or replacement road transport. A closure does not necessarily produce all of these outcomes.

Network Rail says it coordinates work where possible, combining smaller jobs into larger closures to reduce the total time the railway is unavailable. It also says it will offer alternative arrangements wherever possible, including diversionary train routes or replacement buses. That is an operating aim, not a guarantee that every affected passenger will have a rail-only alternative. Network Rail’s engineering-work timings

Diverted or retimed trains
A diversion can make a journey longer because the train uses a different route. A revised timetable can also mean a different departure, a longer wait, or a tighter connection. The amount of extra time depends on the route and service plan; there is no general delay figure that applies to all closures.

Replacement buses and coaches
When trains cannot run over the affected section, a bus or coach may carry passengers between stations or around the closed section. This adds a road leg and usually a change from train to bus and back to rail. Passengers may need to walk to a separate stop, wait for the replacement vehicle and allow time to board and reconnect with the next train.
The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) says planned closures can range from brief overnight work to blockades lasting several months. Its November 2023 review found that passengers did not consistently receive the information they needed in advance or on the day. It called for clearer online and station information, replacement services to appear in live departure information, visible bus destinations and onboard notice as buses approach stops. How to compare journey options
When more than one route or departure is available, compare the whole trip from origin to destination, not just the train segments. A route with a shorter rail-only timetable may take longer overall once a bus transfer or connection wait is included.
Recommended Free Tools
- Total scheduled journey time: include the replacement road leg and waits between services.
- Transfers and their locations: note where you leave the train, where the bus stop is, and where you rejoin rail service.
- Connection margin: consider how much time you have to change and what the next option is if a connection is missed.
- Accessibility: check the replacement vehicle, stop and interchange against your needs.
- Information certainty: check how current the timetable is and whether the operator has issued a more recent notice.
What to check before travelling
- Open the National Rail journey planner and search for the exact date and journey. National Rail directs passengers to its journey planner and disruption information for current journey details.
- Read any engineering-work or disruption notice for your route. Confirm whether your train runs as scheduled, is diverted, starts or terminates at a different station, or is replaced by a bus or coach.
- Check the full itinerary, including revised departure and arrival times, transfer points, replacement-stop location and connection times.
- If you need accessible travel arrangements, check the relevant operator’s accessible travel information and confirm that the replacement vehicle and boarding arrangements meet your needs. ORR guidance expects advance information about replacement transport accessibility and available options.
- Recheck close to departure for updates to the journey or arrangements. Network Rail says its aim is usually to give at least four months’ notice once exact service impacts are known; this is not a guarantee for every work, and details may change. Network Rail’s engineering-work timings
National Rail’s network page describes more than 20,000 miles of track, 45,000 bridges and tunnels, and 6,500 level crossings; the page does not state a year for those figures. They indicate the scale of infrastructure that may need inspection, maintenance, repair or replacement, but do not measure how often closures happen or how much disruption passengers experience. What a closure means for compensation and passenger rights
There is no single compensation rule that can be applied to every closure. For Great Britain, the relevant ticket, operator, the reason for disruption and the actual delay or cancellation all matter. National Rail provides information about Delay Repay, while ORR guidance discusses the National Rail Conditions of Travel as part of the ticket contract. The UK guidance surfaced by ORR says that when a rail service cannot be provided, alternative transport should be provided as soon as possible; it does not establish a universal right to a particular transport mode, refund or compensation amount for every closure. Check the applicable ticket and operator terms, and use the National Rail passenger rights and obligations information for the relevant circumstances.
For journeys within the scope of EU passenger-rights rules, the European Commission says Regulation (EU) 2021/782 has applied since 7 June 2023 and provides a common form for reimbursement and compensation claims involving delays, missed connections and cancellations. Check the current rules and any national exemptions for the journey. These EU rules should not be assumed to govern a domestic Great Britain trip. European Commission: rail passenger rights
