How Radium Monofluoride Could Help Probe the Standard Model

Researchers used radium monofluoride spectroscopy to study magnetization inside a radium nucleus. The finding builds groundwork for possible future tests of fundamental symmetries, but does not challenge the Standard Model by itself.

Radium monofluoride (RaF) could eventually help physicists test fundamental symmetries with unusual sensitivity. But the 2025 result was not a discovery of new physics: researchers used the radioactive molecule’s spectrum to investigate how magnetization is distributed inside its radium nucleus. That nuclear-structure measurement is a step toward future precision tests, not evidence that the Standard Model has failed.

What the 2025 RaF experiment found

The 2025 study in Science examined the hyperfine structure of 225Ra19F: a molecule containing radium-225 and fluorine-19. Hyperfine structure is the small splitting of molecular energy levels caused by interactions between the nucleus and the molecule’s electrons. By measuring that splitting and comparing it with theoretical calculations, the researchers tested models of how magnetization is distributed within the radium nucleus.

The reported advance was that the finite size of nuclear magnetization became visible in a molecule for the first time. In other words, the spectrum carries information about the spatial distribution of the nucleus’s magnetism, rather than treating it as if all the magnetization were concentrated at a point. This is a nuclear-structure observation; it is not a measurement of a symmetry violation or a signal from a new particle or force.

Why a misshapen radium nucleus matters

Some heavy radium nuclei are predicted to have octupole deformation—often described informally as a pear-like shape rather than a sphere. Nuclear shape and magnetization can influence the way electrons and the nucleus interact, leaving signatures in a molecule’s spectrum. Calculations predict that certain symmetry-violating nuclear properties could be unusually influential in molecules containing heavy, deformed nuclei.

That prospect connects RaF to tests of parity and time-reversal symmetry, fundamental symmetries used in particle physics. A theoretical enhancement is a reason to investigate a system, not proof that an effect has been observed. Researchers first need to understand the molecule and nucleus well enough to distinguish a genuine symmetry-violating signal from ordinary nuclear and molecular effects.

How RaF research has progressed

Year Milestone What it establishes
2010 Theoretical proposal of RaF as a candidate for molecular parity-violation experiments. A proposed route for future experiments, supported by calculations and the prospect of laser cooling—not an experimental observation of parity violation.
2014 Relativistic calculations of parity- and time-reversal-violating interaction parameters for 223RaF. Calculated parameters relevant to effects such as the nuclear anapole, the electron electric dipole moment, and scalar-pseudoscalar interactions; these were not measured violations.
2020 A Nature study demonstrated spectroscopy of short-lived radioactive molecules at CERN’s ISOLDE facility, measured low-lying RaF electronic states, and reported evidence for a suitable laser-cooling scheme. Experimental foundations for studying radioactive molecules and developing RaF as a potential laser-cooled system. The measured isotopologues included 224RaF; the study gives a 3.6-day half-life for radium-224.
2024 A Physical Review A study measured the radiative lifetime of the RaF A2Π1/2 (v=0) excited state: 35(1) ns, reported by the study authors. A measurement relevant to assessing laser cooling, not the 2025 result about nuclear magnetization.
2025 A Science study combined precision spectroscopy of 225Ra19F with calculations to examine the radium nucleus’s magnetization distribution. Evidence of finite nuclear-magnetization effects in a molecule, providing nuclear-structure information for later work.

Why laser cooling is part of the plan

Laser cooling uses carefully chosen light to slow and control molecules. That control can make it easier to interrogate a molecule repeatedly and precisely, which is valuable when searching for very small effects. RaF’s electronic and rotational structure has therefore been studied not only to understand its spectrum but also to assess whether a workable cooling scheme can be developed.

The 2020 spectroscopy established low-lying electronic states and evidence for a suitable scheme; later work described characterization of rotational levels and a proposed cooling scheme. These are enabling results. They do not mean that RaF has already been laser-cooled for a successful precision symmetry test.

What the result does—and does not—say about the Standard Model

The Standard Model has not been overturned by this experiment. The researchers measured a nuclear property through molecular spectroscopy and tested calculations of magnetization distribution. The result can improve the nuclear and molecular models needed to interpret later measurements, including possible searches for symmetry-violating effects.

The distinction is important: RaF is interesting because theory suggests it may be a sensitive system for future tests, while the 2025 study helps establish how its nucleus behaves. Turning that foundation into a more stringent test will require further theoretical work and experiments that can isolate and measure the relevant symmetry-sensitive effects.

What remains uncertain

The published result supports the qualitative finding about finite nuclear magnetization, but the exact hyperfine constants, their uncertainties, and the detailed measurement methods are not specified here. The significance of the work is therefore best described at the level the reported finding supports: a new molecular probe of nuclear magnetization distribution that may contribute to future precision tests, not a completed test of the Standard Model.
