If a PayPal payment is marked Completed, PayPal says the money is in the recipient’s PayPal account. Getting that balance into a bank is a separate step: PayPal’s estimates vary by country and transfer method, and the receiving bank may take extra time to post it.
Does “receive money” mean PayPal or your bank?
There are two different waits. First, a sender’s payment reaches the recipient’s PayPal account. Later, if the recipient withdraws the balance, PayPal sends it to a linked bank account or another eligible destination. A payment marked Completed is not the same as a bank withdrawal marked Complete.

PayPal’s US payment-status guidance defines Completed as: “The transaction was successful and the money is in the recipient’s account.” That status refers to the PayPal account, not the time a bank takes to post a withdrawal.

How long does an incoming PayPal payment take?
Completed
When the transaction shows Completed, the money is in the recipient’s PayPal account under PayPal’s US status definition. Whether the balance is available to use or withdraw can still depend on a separate hold or account-specific restriction.

Pending or eCheck
A payment can remain pending while PayPal reviews it or verifies its funding source. In the US, PayPal says an eCheck usually takes up to 7 business days to clear. Check the transaction details for the specific reason and status.
On hold or held
A hold related to a review or dispute can make funds temporarily unavailable to spend or withdraw. Check the transaction and any PayPal notice or Resolution Center instructions for the next step; the timing depends on the case.

Unclaimed
PayPal’s US guidance says an unclaimed payment can be returned if the recipient does not claim it within 30 days, and that an unclaimed transaction is automatically canceled after 30 days. If the recipient has not received the payment, check its status rather than assuming it is still on its way.
How long does a PayPal withdrawal to a bank take?
Withdrawal estimates depend on the country and transfer option. PayPal’s US and UK help pages give different schedules, so do not apply one country’s estimate to another. The times below are PayPal’s published estimates, not guarantees.

Availability of instant transfers and linked destinations depends on the account and country. The cited US and UK pages provide bank-transfer estimates; they do not establish a universal timing estimate for a linked debit card. For another country or destination, use the estimate PayPal shows for your account and withdrawal option.

PayPal’s “Complete” withdrawal status means it has processed or sent the withdrawal; the receiving bank may still need time to post it. PayPal identifies bank processing, reviews, and incorrect or mismatched bank details as possible reasons for delay. Its UK User Agreement also explains that banks and payment systems play a role after a withdrawal instruction is made.

In the US, PayPal says a standard transfer started after 7 p.m. Eastern Time, on a weekend, or on a holiday may take an additional day. Working-day estimates also depend on bank and local processing calendars.

What to check if the money has not arrived
- Open PayPal Activity and select the transaction. Confirm whether it is an incoming payment or a withdrawal, then read its current status and details.
- If an incoming payment is pending, check the stated reason. Look for eCheck clearance, funding-source verification, a review, or a hold. Follow any instructions in the transaction, PayPal email, or Resolution Center notice.
- If a withdrawal is pending or processing, allow for the local estimate. Use the estimate shown by PayPal for your country and selected destination rather than assuming US or UK timing applies.
- If PayPal marks a withdrawal complete, verify the destination details. Check that the linked bank account or card information is correct, then allow for the receiving institution’s posting time.
- Contact the bank if the expected time has passed. PayPal’s US guidance specifically advises contacting the bank if an instant transfer has not arrived after 30 minutes. That is US-page guidance, not a universal rule; follow the instructions applicable to your location and transfer.
