How Queue and Database Retry Deadlines Really Work

Queue timeouts, redrive thresholds, retention windows and database transaction retries govern different state. Learn what expiry permits and how to protect work from overlapping or stale workers.

A renewal deadline is a temporary boundary on who may act—not proof that a worker has stopped. When a queue visibility timeout or application lease expires, another worker may take over while the original is still running. Safe designs treat these deadlines as separate clocks, make repeated work harmless, and prevent an expired owner from updating state as if it still held the claim.

Queue delivery retries, dead-letter queue (DLQ) redrive, and database transaction retries are related but distinct mechanisms. Their limits and expiry rules depend on the specific service or implementation; there is no universal renewal-deadline rule.

Which deadline is expiring?

Retry systems often involve several clocks, each attached to different state. Confusing them can lead to missed work, premature redrive, or two workers acting on the same item.

  • Visibility or lease deadline: how long a particular worker’s claim temporarily prevents another worker from taking the item.
  • Retry or redrive threshold: how many failed deliveries or attempts a service allows before changing where the work is sent.
  • Retention deadline: how long a message or event remains available for processing, investigation, or replay.
  • Transaction retry: an application response to a database concurrency failure. It is not a queue lease and does not itself extend one.

For each mechanism, identify whose clock is authoritative, what event counts as a retry, what renewal does, and what becomes possible at expiry. A timeout becoming due changes eligibility; it does not terminate code already running in a worker.

What happens when a queue visibility timeout expires?

In Amazon SQS, receiving a message makes it temporarily invisible to other consumers. The visibility timeout is a delivery lease, not a lock that proves exclusive processing forever. If the consumer neither deletes the message nor extends its invisibility before the timeout expires, the message can become available for another delivery. The first consumer may still be running, so both attempts can overlap.

SQS developer documentation accessed in 2026 lists a 30-second default visibility timeout and a configurable maximum of 12 hours. Those are SQS-specific configuration limits, not general queue standards. Set the timeout to cover expected processing time or renew it with enough margin for pauses and network delays. Renewal reduces avoidable duplicate deliveries, but cannot prevent a crash, stalled process, or partition from disrupting ownership.

Design the handler on the assumption that an item can be processed more than once. Make database changes conditional on current ownership, and give external effects—such as sending a payment request or notification—an idempotency strategy where the receiving system supports one. A worker should not infer that it remains the sole processor just because it once received the message.

How do SQS redrive thresholds and retention interact?

A visibility timeout governs temporary invisibility; an SQS redrive policy governs repeated unsuccessful receives. The source queue’s policy names a DLQ and sets maxReceiveCount. SQS moves a message after its receive count exceeds that threshold. Choose the threshold based on how many delivery opportunities the handler needs, rather than treating it as a universal retry count.

For standard queues, SQS documentation notes that when maxReceiveCount is greater than 3, a message received three or more times without deletion is moved to the back of the queue. That queue-position behavior can affect the interpretation of queue age metrics. Redrive and visibility expiry are not the same operation: one changes message routing after repeated receives, while the other makes a message eligible for another delivery.

Retention determines whether a failed message will still be available when someone is ready to investigate or replay it. SQS documents a maximum message retention period of 14 days. For standard queues, expiration continues to use the original enqueue timestamp after transfer to a DLQ; for FIFO queues, the enqueue timestamp resets on transfer. SQS recommends setting DLQ retention longer than source-queue retention when investigation time matters.

A DLQ also has an ordering trade-off for FIFO workflows. If a failed earlier operation is moved aside, later operations may proceed without it. Where strict sequence matters, decide explicitly whether isolating a poison message is acceptable or whether processing must stop until the earlier operation is resolved.

How does a service retry policy differ from database polling?

A managed event service can retry delivery of an event to a target without running the target’s database transaction logic. Amazon EventBridge, for example, retries failed target invocations according to its configured policy and can send failures to an on-failure destination. Its documentation accessed in 2026 gives a default of 5 attempts or 300 seconds, whichever limit is reached first. These are EventBridge defaults, not SQS receive-count rules or general retry guidance.

EventBridge failure handling also has its own recovery path: its documentation describes replaying events from the event bus, provided they remain within that bus’s retention period. An event delivery failure record and replay procedure should not be assumed to behave like a message moved to an SQS DLQ.

Amazon SNS illustrates why retry counts cannot be generalized even across one cloud provider: delivery retry behavior is attached to subscription endpoints and differs for client-side and server-side errors. A subscription can also have an SQS DLQ. Check the policy for the actual service and endpoint rather than carrying over another service’s thresholds.

Why does PostgreSQL require a complete transaction retry?

PostgreSQL’s official guidance says: “Therefore, PostgreSQL does not offer an automatic retry facility, since it cannot do so with any guarantee of correctness.” When a serialization failure occurs, the application should retry the complete transaction, including the decisions about which SQL to issue and which values to use.

Retrying only the statement that failed is unsafe because the transaction may have chosen that statement based on earlier reads that no longer reflect a valid concurrent view. The retried unit is the full decision-and-update sequence. This concurrency retry is separate from a queue redelivery or a worker lease renewal: it does not reacquire a queue message or establish ownership of polled work.

How should a database polling worker claim work safely?

A short database transaction can coordinate the initial claim, but a row lock held only during that transaction does not represent ownership for processing that continues after commit. Persist claim state—such as an owner identity and expiry—and make completion conditional on the claim still being current.

  1. Claim briefly: in a short transaction, select eligible work and record the worker’s claim identity and deadline. Commit before doing lengthy processing.
  2. Renew deliberately: if work may outlast the deadline, extend the persisted lease before expiry with adequate margin. Define how a failed or late renewal affects the worker.
  3. Check ownership when settling: on completion or failure, update the row only if the worker’s claim identity or generation still matches. An old attempt must not mark work complete after a new worker has taken over.
  4. Protect side effects: use idempotency keys or equivalent safeguards for external requests. Rejecting a stale database update cannot undo an external action the old worker already issued.

The pg_lease semantics specification is one implementation-specific example: it describes expiry based on database server time, a lapsed-lease state, and epochs for identifying stale ownership. Its stated guarantees for blocking acquisition assume READ COMMITTED; transaction isolation affects what a waiting transaction can see. This is not built-in PostgreSQL lease behavior, so verify the actual library or application protocol.

What should you compare before choosing a retry mechanism?

Compare the actual behavior of the queue service, polling table, or lease implementation—not just the name of its timeout setting. A useful design review records these points:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Clock source and boundary: whose clock determines expiry, whether equality counts as expired, and when another worker can claim.
  • Renewal behavior: which operation extends ownership, how much margin it needs, and what the worker does when renewal fails.
  • Retry accounting: whether expiry itself consumes retry budget or only an explicit failure or negative acknowledgment does.
  • Stale-worker protection: whether updates check a claim generation or fencing token, and how external effects remain safe if an old worker continues.
  • Ordering: whether retries, queue position changes, or DLQ transfer can let later work pass an earlier failure.
  • Recovery window: how long the original message or event remains available and what replay or redrive procedure restores it.
  • Failure classification: which failures merit another attempt and which indicate permanent data or configuration problems.

Document these semantics alongside the worker’s processing time assumptions and recovery procedure. Exact limits and edge cases are service-, version-, and implementation-specific; check the documentation for the system actually deployed.
