A charged, compatible spare can reduce downtime during a battery swap; a dock can automate the return-to-charge step when the robot and site are configured for it. The exact battery, charger, procedure, and charging time depend on the robot model and hardware revision.
Three ways a quadruped robot gets charged
Battery swapping and charging are related but distinct tasks. A swap replaces a depleted pack with a charged compatible one. Charging replenishes a pack, either while it is installed in the robot or after it has been removed. Docking adds a further capability: a compatible robot can navigate to a powered station and connect for charging.

These options are not universal features of every robot dog. The manufacturer determines whether the battery is removable, which charger or dock is supported, and what steps operators must follow. Unitree Go2 and Boston Dynamics Spot provide documented examples, not interchangeable instructions for other quadrupeds.
| Workflow | What happens | What it requires | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Off-robot charging | An operator removes the depleted pack and charges it with the specified charger. | A removable battery, a compatible charger, and a safe, model-specific removal procedure. | The robot can be fitted with a charged spare while the removed pack recharges. |
| Direct charging | The robot is connected to its dedicated charging supply. | The robot’s specified charger and access to the robot while it is charging. | The battery remains installed; the robot is not available for work during charging. |
| Dock charging | The robot returns to a powered dock and connects to charge. | A compatible dock, suitable site setup, and a configured return-and-docking workflow. | The return and connection steps can be automated; the dock does not make compatibility or setup optional. |
A battery swap is useful only if a charged spare is ready and approved for that exact robot. Docking is useful only when the robot can locate and use the installed dock. Neither changes the underlying charging time of the battery; they change how charging fits into the robot’s operating schedule.

What happens during a battery swap?
In broad terms, a removable-battery workflow has two parallel parts: take the depleted pack out of service, and put a charged compatible pack in the robot. The removed battery can then be charged separately. This arrangement can reduce the period when the robot is unavailable, but only if a spare battery is already charged and the operator follows the maker’s handling procedure.
Boston Dynamics explicitly describes hot-swapping as an option for Spot users, alongside charging the robot directly. Its statement is specific to Spot; it is not a safe basis for assuming that another quadruped supports hot-swapping or that its battery may be changed while powered. Check the current instructions for the exact robot and battery revision before attempting a replacement.
Unitree identifies two Go2 battery versions: BT2-05 standard and BT2-06 long-endurance. The Go2 battery page lists the standard battery’s capacity and electrical ratings, and says the battery includes a battery management system with protections for functions such as balanced charging, overcharge, charging temperature and current, short circuit, and over-discharge. Those are manufacturer-listed functions, not independent verification of battery safety or permission to modify the pack.
The practical planning question is not simply whether a robot has a removable battery. It is whether the operation has the right spare, a way to charge the removed pack, and a safe process for exchanging packs. If any of those is missing, swapping may not meaningfully extend availability.
How charging a removed battery differs from charging the robot
A dedicated battery charger is designed for a particular battery system. For Go2, Unitree describes its charger as specially designed for Go2 batteries. The manufacturer’s page lists a standard charger and a quick-charger version; the stated time and electrical ratings for the standard charger should not be treated as specifications for every Go2 battery-and-charger combination.

Direct charging avoids removing the battery: connect the robot using its specified supply and let the installed battery recharge. Spot supports direct charging as well as battery hot-swapping. The Spot product page and Spot 5.2 developer documentation publish different battery and charge-time figures, so operators should use the specification that applies to their robot and documentation version rather than combining the numbers into a single expected charge time.
Charging times are not a general measure of how long every quadruped must remain plugged in. They are tied to a stated model, battery, charger, and manufacturer source. The figures below preserve those distinctions.
Published battery and charging figures
| Robot or accessory | Published figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Unitree Go2 standard battery | 29.6 V rated voltage; 33.6 V charge-limit voltage; 3.5–9 A charging-current range; 8,000 mAh / 236.8 Wh capacity | Unitree’s current Go2 battery page, accessed 2026. The same page identifies BT2-05 standard and BT2-06 long-endurance versions; the listed capacity is for the standard battery. Unitree Go2 Battery |
| Unitree Go2 standard charger | 33.6 V, 3.5 A; stated charging time 2–4 hours | Unitree’s current Go2 charger page, accessed 2026. This is the standard charger figure, not a universal estimate for other chargers or robot models. Unitree Go2 Charger |
| Boston Dynamics Spot product-page battery and charging figures | 564 Wh battery capacity; 90 minutes average runtime; 180 minutes standby; 60 minutes recharge time | Boston Dynamics’ Spot product page, accessed 2026. The page says runtime varies with payload and environmental factors. Spot |
| Boston Dynamics Spot 5.2 developer documentation | 605 Wh; 90 minutes typical runtime; 120 minutes to charge; 400 W charger power; 7 A maximum charge current | Figures stated in Boston Dynamics’ Spot 5.2 docking documentation. These differ from the public product-page figures above and should be read as version-specific documentation, not merged with them. Spot 5.2 Docking documentation |
Boston Dynamics also says that newer Spot battery models can charge to full in an hour or less and that the charger display provides real-time charge information. That claim appears in the company’s Doing More with Spot blog; it refers to newer Spot battery models, not to quadruped robots generally. The different Spot figures above come from different manufacturer pages and documentation contexts, so verify the applicable battery and documentation for a particular unit.
How a robot dock supports unattended charging
A powered dock can let a robot return to a designated location to recharge rather than requiring an operator to connect it manually. On Spot, the dock has charging and Ethernet connections. Spot uses a vision tag to locate the dock, while the Spot 5.2 docking service supports dock and undock commands and reports docking state. Boston Dynamics also describes using multiple docks at a site to extend missions.
That is an automated workflow, not simply a charger placed on the floor. It depends on a compatible dock and a configured robot workflow. The docking service’s commands and reported state are part of the Spot 5.2 developer documentation; they should not be assumed to exist under the same names or work the same way on other robots.

For a site operator, the key distinction is between charging hardware and mission logic. The powered connection supplies charging; the robot’s docking capability and site configuration govern whether it can find, approach, connect to, and later leave the dock as intended. A dock can reduce manual handling when these pieces work together, but the existence of a dock alone does not establish that a robot can autonomously use it.

Choosing a workflow for a robot operation
Choose swapping when spare batteries fit the schedule
A spare compatible pack can be a practical way to keep a robot available while a depleted battery charges away from it. Before relying on this approach, confirm that the battery is replaceable, identify the correct battery model, and obtain the current swap and charging instructions for the robot revision. A spare that is incompatible, depleted, or not approved for the robot does not solve downtime.
Choose direct charging when manual connection is acceptable
Direct charging is the simpler workflow when the robot can be idle for the time specified by its manufacturer and an operator can connect it using the dedicated supply. For an individual robot, this avoids a spare-pack exchange; for operations with scheduled idle periods, it can make charging part of the routine. Use the model-specific charger rather than inferring compatibility from a connector or voltage alone.
Consider a dock when the return step can be configured
A dock is relevant when the robot supports it and the site benefits from an automated return-to-charge workflow. Confirm that the dock is intended for the robot, that the installation and navigation setup meet the manufacturer’s requirements, and that operators can check whether docking succeeded. The Spot documentation’s docking state reporting is one example of such a capability, not a general guarantee for other systems.
Plan around workload, not a single runtime number
Published runtime is an estimate tied to a specific product and operating conditions. Boston Dynamics cautions that Spot runtime varies with payload and environmental factors. A mission plan should therefore use the manufacturer’s applicable figures as a reference, not a promise that every workload will run for exactly the listed duration. Where a source provides standby time separately from average runtime, do not treat standby as equivalent to active work time.

Compatibility and safety: what not to assume
Battery packs, chargers, and docks are system-specific equipment. Unitree says its Go2 charger is designed for Go2 batteries; Boston Dynamics provides Spot-specific charging and dock materials. Neither example supports treating chargers as interchangeable across brands or models. Do not improvise wiring, adapters, or battery modifications based on matching nominal voltage or connector shape.
Use the current instructions for the exact robot, charger, battery, and hardware revision. Boston Dynamics maintains separate instructions for Spot, the Spot charger and battery, and Spot Dock through its Spot Product Safety page. Unitree’s Go2 battery and charger pages identify product-specific ratings and protections. Consult the applicable manufacturer materials before handling, charging, or replacing a pack; do not disassemble a battery or substitute a charger unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it.
- Verify the robot model and hardware revision before ordering or using a battery.
- Match the battery and charger to the manufacturer’s specified combination.
- Follow the current model-specific procedure for removal, replacement, connection, and charging.
- For a dock workflow, verify dock compatibility and the robot’s configured docking behavior.
- Use the manufacturer’s applicable runtime and recharge information rather than transferring another model’s figures.
What to check before buying a spare or setting up a dock
For a spare pack, establish the robot’s exact model and battery identifier first. Unitree’s Go2 page distinguishes the BT2-05 standard and BT2-06 long-endurance batteries; a listing that merely says it fits “a robot dog” would not establish compatibility. Confirm the seller’s stated battery model against the manufacturer’s information and the unit’s own documentation. The sources cited here do not establish current marketplace availability.
For a charger, check the manufacturer, robot model, battery version, and charger version. Go2’s standard charger and quick charger are distinct product options, and the standard charger’s stated charging time should not be assigned to the quick charger without a source. For Spot operations, Boston Dynamics lists battery, charger, and dock among its product extras; accessory selection should still be checked against the relevant Spot materials.

Why charge-time and runtime claims can seem inconsistent
Two published figures for a robot with the same product name can describe different battery generations, hardware revisions, or documentation contexts. The Spot product page gives one set of capacity and recharge figures; Spot 5.2 documentation gives another. The correct response is not to average them or select whichever seems more favorable, but to identify the source and version that apply to the unit in question.
Runtime and recharge time also answer different questions. Runtime estimates how long a robot can operate or remain on standby under the source’s stated framing. Recharge time estimates how long a battery takes to charge under the specified hardware conditions. A stated average or typical runtime is not a guaranteed mission duration, and a product-page recharge number should not automatically be applied to another battery generation.
When evaluating any claim, keep its model, battery version, charger, and source attached to the number. If those details are missing, treat the figure as incomplete rather than as a universal robot-dog specification.

Bottom line for operators
Quadruped battery management is a choice between changing packs, charging the installed pack, and automating the return to a compatible charging dock. Swapping is a downtime strategy that depends on a charged spare; direct charging requires the robot to be connected and idle; docking requires supported hardware and a configured workflow. Use the exact manufacturer’s documentation for procedures and compatibility, and interpret runtime and charge figures only in the context of their model and version.
