Its strongest points are queueing, file selection, RSS automation, bandwidth scheduling, and remote management through a Web UI. It is not a privacy guarantee: the project warns that Anonymous Mode alone does not provide strong privacy, and support is less active on macOS than on other platforms.
What is qBittorrent?
qBittorrent is a peer-to-peer file-sharing client and an open-source alternative to µTorrent. The project says it is developed by volunteers and built with Qt and the libtorrent-rasterbar library. It is free software under the GNU GPLv2; the project FAQ says it does not plan to charge for the client. Learn about the project.

The client’s features are for managing BitTorrent transfers; they do not determine whether a particular download or upload is lawful. The project FAQ describes qBittorrent as “a peer to peer (P2P) file sharing software” and cautions that downloading restricted content may be illegal depending on the laws of the user’s country.

How good is qBittorrent for everyday use?
Its main advantage is the breadth of transfer controls available in a desktop client. You can manage a queue, prioritize torrents or individual files, schedule bandwidth use, and select which files within a torrent to download. RSS feeds can be paired with advanced filters, including regular expressions, to automate finding and handling eligible downloads. An extensible search engine can search torrent sites from within the client. The project’s feature list documents these capabilities.

These tools are useful when you manage several transfers, want to avoid downloading every file in a torrent, or need transfers to follow a schedule. They describe functionality, not a guarantee of higher speed or lower resource use. No controlled speed, memory, or head-to-head client benchmark is established here, so there is no sound basis for calling qBittorrent the fastest or lightest option.
Is qBittorrent easy to use?
TechRadar’s review, published July 31, 2025, characterizes the interface as minimal and approachable, with features arranged in a conventional dashboard. That is one reviewer’s assessment; users who want extensive automation may still need to explore settings such as RSS filters, scheduling, and queue controls. The same review says setting up the remote Web UI takes more effort than using an Android app.
Does qBittorrent have a web interface?
Yes. qBittorrent includes a Web UI for remote control of transfers from another device. It is useful when the client runs on a computer or server you do not want to operate directly, but it requires setup rather than simply installing a dedicated Android app. TechRadar noted that qBittorrent does not have a dedicated Android client in its July 2025 review. Remote access should be configured carefully; exposing a management interface beyond the network you intend to use creates security considerations.
Which platforms does qBittorrent support?
The project provides builds for major desktop and Unix-like platforms, but platform support and release cadence are not identical. At the time of the project’s download-page check on October 7, 2026, the official page listed version 5.2.4 as stable and 5.3.0rc1 as a release candidate. Stable Windows and Linux builds were offered in Qt 6 variants using libtorrent 1.2.x or 2.0.x; the release candidate offered libtorrent 2.1.x or 1.2.x variants. These listings can change, so consult the official download page for current builds and checksums.
What about macOS?
The same download page listed a macOS build at version 5.2.3 and described macOS support as barely maintained because there are no active macOS developers or contributors. That makes macOS a less reassuring choice for users who prioritize active platform maintenance; do not assume it receives the same release cadence as Windows or Linux.

Is qBittorrent safe and private?
qBittorrent is software, not an anonymity service. The project wiki states: “WARNING: anonymous mode doesn’t provide strong privacy guarantees on its own.” Anonymous Mode limits information the client broadcasts, such as its user-agent fingerprint, but its behavior depends on the libtorrent version and whether a torrent is private. Read the project’s Anonymous Mode guidance before relying on it.
The project wiki also explains how to bind qBittorrent to a VPN network interface. Binding is a configuration method intended to restrict which interface the client uses; it does not guarantee anonymity or replace evaluating the VPN, operating system, and network configuration. See the VPN interface binding instructions.
Keep the client current and obtain builds from the official download page. The project’s release history records security fixes in v5.1.2 affecting WebAPI, RSS, and Search, and a v5.2.1 fix to prevent SSRF via HTTP redirection. Those entries are reasons to pay attention to version-specific release notes, not proof that any version is free of vulnerabilities. Check the official release history for updates.
Is qBittorrent legal?
The client itself is free software, but using it does not make every transfer lawful. As the qBittorrent project FAQ explains, downloading restricted content may be illegal depending on local law. Whether a particular download or upload is permitted depends on the content and the rules that apply where you are. Read the project FAQ and follow applicable law.
Who should choose qBittorrent?
qBittorrent is a good fit for desktop users who want a free client with meaningful controls for organizing and automating legal transfers. Its RSS filters, selective file downloads, scheduling, queue management, search interface, and Web UI offer more flexibility than a bare-bones transfer workflow. Consider another approach if you need a dedicated Android app, dependable active macOS maintenance, or a client whose privacy properties require no configuration. The available evidence does not establish comparative speed, memory use, or superiority over other clients.
