Puppeteer uses an explicitly configured executable path first. If none is set, it builds the expected path from the selected browser, the browser version Puppeteer expects, and its configured cache directory, then checks whether the executable exists. If that file is missing—or the browser type, version, or cache differs from what the launcher expects—you can see a “Could not find Chrome” error.
How Puppeteer resolves the executable path
- It checks for an explicit path. Puppeteer uses the configured
executablePathfirst. The environment variablePUPPETEER_EXECUTABLE_PATHcan set that value. When path validation is enabled, a configured path that does not exist causes an error instead of a cache lookup. See the Puppeteer configuration API and launcher implementation. - Otherwise, it calculates a cache path. Puppeteer uses the chosen browser type, its expected browser version, and the configured download directory to calculate an executable path.
- It verifies the expected file exists. If it is absent, Puppeteer reports that browser installation may not have run or the cache path may be misconfigured.
That means a browser binary can be present on disk and still not satisfy Puppeteer: it must be the right browser type and build in the location the launcher resolves.
Where Puppeteer downloads the browser
The documented default cache directory is path.join(os.homedir(), '.cache', 'puppeteer'), commonly shown as $HOME/.cache/puppeteer. The cacheDirectory configuration setting controls the location, and PUPPETEER_CACHE_DIR can override it. Environment variables take precedence over configuration-file values when applicable. The configuration guide says global browser caching began with Puppeteer v19.0.0; the current API page identifies itself as v25.12.0. Check the docs for the version you have installed because configuration details can change. Puppeteer configuration guide.
A cache outside the project can become disconnected when you package or move the project to a new environment. The new environment may not have that cache, even if it existed on the machine where the package was built.

Make sure a browser was installed
Using the puppeteer package
Installing puppeteer normally downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing. Puppeteer’s installation guide says that beginning with v21.6.0, installation also downloads a chrome-headless-shell binary. If your package manager blocks install scripts, that browser download is skipped. Install it explicitly with:
npx puppeteer browsers install
If you changed download-related configuration, rerun the browser installation so the downloaded files reflect the new settings. Puppeteer installation guide.

Using puppeteer-core
puppeteer-core does not download Chrome. It is intended for setups such as connecting to a remote browser or managing browser installation yourself. In that case, supply an existing executable path or a channel for a browser installed in a standard location. The Puppeteer project’s installation guide says: “If you are managing browsers yourself, you will need to call puppeteer.launch with an explicit executablePath (or channel if it’s installed in a standard location).”
Browser type and headless mode must match
Puppeteer resolves the selected browser to a particular installed-browser type. Regular Chrome uses Chrome; Chrome launched with headless: 'shell' uses Chrome Headless Shell; Firefox uses Firefox. A cache containing a different type will not match the calculated path. The same principle applies if the cache has a different browser build than the version Puppeteer expects. See the launcher implementation.

Fix a “Could not find Chrome” or executable-path error
- Check the package. If the project uses
puppeteer-core, install and manage a browser separately; it will not download Chrome for you. - Check whether installation scripts ran. If your package manager blocked lifecycle scripts, run
npx puppeteer browsers install. - Check the effective cache directory. Review the Puppeteer configuration’s
cacheDirectoryand the runtime value ofPUPPETEER_CACHE_DIR. An environment override can point to a different directory than the configuration file. - Check for an explicit executable override. Look for
executablePathin code orPUPPETEER_EXECUTABLE_PATHin the environment. It takes precedence over automatic cache lookup and must point to a file available in the runtime environment. - Check browser type and mode. Confirm the installed browser matches the selected browser and headless mode—especially Chrome versus Chrome Headless Shell.
- If you manage the browser yourself, configure it explicitly. Set
executablePathto the actual binary path, or use a supportedchannelfor a standard installation.
Choose who manages the browser
| Setup | Who installs and updates the browser | Path Puppeteer uses | What to keep aligned |
|---|---|---|---|
puppeteer with its downloaded browser |
Puppeteer’s installation process | The configured cache and expected browser build | Install scripts, cache settings, browser selection, and runtime environment |
puppeteer-core or externally managed browser |
Your deployment or browser-management process | An explicit executablePath or standard-location channel |
The binary’s existence and compatibility with the selected browser and mode |
Keeping Puppeteer’s cache with the runtime environment is simpler when you want Puppeteer to manage the browser. External management gives you control over installation, but your deployment must provide a valid path or channel.
Or skip the browser setup
