How PS5 Pro Enhances Older Games: PSSR, Resolution, and Frame Rates Explained

PS5 Pro can improve older games through PSSR upscaling, Game Boost and developer patches, but the resolution and frame-rate gains vary by title.

PS5 Pro can improve older games through extra GPU headroom, PSSR upscaling, Game Boost for supported PS4 and PS5 titles, and game-specific developer updates. What changes depends on the game: a sharper reconstructed image, steadier performance, a new graphics mode, or some combination. None of these features guarantees native 4K or 60 frames per second in every title.

How does PS5 Pro enhance older games?

There are three distinct routes to an improvement: the console can provide more rendering headroom, PSSR can reconstruct a higher-resolution image from the game’s rendered frames, and Game Boost or a developer’s update can change how a supported title runs.

More GPU headroom

Sony said in its 2024 PS5 Pro announcement that the console has 67% more GPU Compute Units and memory that is 28% faster than the current PS5, enabling up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Those are Sony’s hardware comparison and stated rendering capability—not a promise that every game will render 45% faster or gain the same benefit. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement

PSSR image reconstruction

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is an upscaling technology. PS5 and PS5 Pro lead architect Mark Cerny described it as “an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them.” Sony said in February 2026 that more than 50 titles had used PSSR to boost effective resolution. That count refers to titles using PSSR, not games that necessarily render natively at the resolution shown on screen. Sony’s February 2026 PSSR announcement

Game Boost and developer updates

Sony says Game Boost may stabilize or improve performance in supported PS4 and PS5 games. It also offers Enhanced Image Quality for select PS4 games, which can improve their resolution. These system features are not the same as a developer-authored PS5 Pro patch: a patch can add a specific rendering mode or adjust a title’s graphics and performance trade-offs. A game may benefit from system-level support, a developer update, or both; the details are title-specific. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement

Does PS5 Pro improve PS4 games?

It can, but not in one uniform way. Game Boost may stabilize or improve performance for supported PS4 games, while Enhanced Image Quality may improve resolution in select PS4 titles. Sony does not say that every PS4 game receives the image-quality feature, nor does it specify a fixed performance increase for each supported game. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement

For a particular PS4 game, check whether it is supported by the relevant feature and whether its publisher has issued a separate update. Do not assume that a game’s resolution, frame rate, or visual settings will change just because it runs on a PS5 Pro.

Does PSSR increase resolution?

PSSR can increase the effective or output resolution by upscaling a game image. That is different from rendering every pixel at the output resolution natively. If a game renders at a lower resolution and PSSR reconstructs an image for a 4K display, “upscaled to 4K” describes the output—not a native 4K render.

Sony announced an upgraded PSSR in February 2026, describing a substantially changed neural network and algorithm and naming Resident Evil Requiem as its first announced use. A March 2026 system software update introduced broad support for the upgraded version. Sony said it improves reconstruction precision, image stability, motion stability, and fine detail; it can also be enabled for existing supported games through an optional PS5 Pro setting. Results can vary by title, and Sony says the option can be turned off if visual effects are unexpected. Sony’s February 2026 PSSR announcement Sony’s March 2026 system software update

Sony’s March post cited Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth among the games and developer accounts associated with the upgrade. Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth at Square Enix, said the newer version restored fine details such as character hair more naturally and produced more stable image processing with less flickering and afterimage. That is a developer’s account, not an independent comparative test. Sony’s March 2026 system software update

Do not confuse PSSR with Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). In October 2026, Sony announced QSSR as a separate performance-tier upscaling library for the base PS5, naming Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first titles. Sony described PSSR as the higher-end option on PS5 Pro. Sony’s QSSR announcement

Will older games run at 60 FPS on PS5 Pro?

Not necessarily. Game Boost may stabilize or improve performance, and a developer patch may introduce a mode with a 60 fps target, but neither guarantees that every older game will reach or maintain 60 fps. A stated target is also not the same as a measured, locked frame rate across all gameplay.

Sony’s 2024 developer roundup gives examples of specific choices. Naughty Dog said The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered would get a PS5 Pro-specific mode rendering at 1440p, upscaling to 4K through PSSR, and targeting 60 fps. Insomniac said its Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank games would offer a Performance Pro mode combining image and ray-tracing features from Fidelity modes with 60 fps. These are descriptions of named games and modes, not a template for other titles. Sony’s developer roundup

What to check before comparing PS5 Pro modes

When a game advertises a PS5 Pro improvement, identify exactly what is changing rather than treating “enhanced” as a single technical result.

  • Support type: Is the game using system-level Game Boost, a developer-authored PS5 Pro update, or both?
  • Image or performance change: Does the claim concern native render resolution, reconstructed output, frame-rate target or stability, ray tracing, or several of these?
  • Mode and version: Which mode and game version does the claim describe, and when was the patch or announcement made?
  • Display and settings: Does the mode require a particular display capability or an enabled console setting?
  • Claim wording: Distinguish a target from a measured result, and an upscaled output resolution from a native render resolution.

For example, “1440p, upscaled to 4K, targeting 60 fps” communicates three different things: the stated render resolution, the reconstructed output, and the intended frame rate. It does not establish native 4K rendering or prove that the game holds 60 fps in every scene.

What hardware do you need?

PSSR and PS5 Pro enhancements require a PS5 Pro console. Sony announced the console as disc-less; owners of physical game libraries can use an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive purchased separately.
