Can you play PS5 games on a PC with an emulator? Not reliably today. As of October 4, 2026, the shadPS5 project describes its emulator as experimental and says it is nowhere near playable. Its work illustrates why PS5 emulation means recreating a whole console platform—not simply running software written for an x86-64 processor.
What a PS5 emulator has to recreate
An emulator tries to reproduce the behavior that software expects from its original hardware and system software. A PS5 game depends on several layers working together: processor instructions, graphics commands and shaders, operating-system services, memory behavior, synchronization, input, and assumptions made by the individual game.

Sony’s published PS5 specifications describe an x86-64 AMD Zen 2 CPU with 8 cores and 16 threads, an RDNA 2-based graphics engine, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, and a custom SSD and I/O design. Sony lists raw SSD read bandwidth of 5.5 GB/s. Those figures describe the console Sony designed; they are not emulator speed targets or proof that a particular PC can run PS5 games. Sony’s PS5 specifications provide useful context, but matching one part of the hardware does not reproduce the full platform.

The PS5’s x86-64 CPU shares a broad instruction-family lineage with desktop processors. That can help an emulator translate CPU work, but it does not provide the console’s graphics interface, system services, memory and synchronization behavior, or device-specific services. A game must encounter the interfaces and timing it expects, not merely a processor capable of executing related instructions.

Graphics and system services need translation too
The shadPS5 project says its approach includes dynamic binary translation for CPU code, translation of GPU command packets and shaders to Vulkan, and high-level emulation of operating-system services. These are descriptions from the project, not independently verified measurements of how completely those layers work. Its page also labels rendering and compatibility features as upcoming, so the implementation description should not be mistaken for a finished, broadly working system. shadPS5’s project page is the source for its stated design and status.
Is there a working PS5 emulator for PC?
There is active PS5 emulator development, but the available status statement does not support treating it as a way to play commercial PS5 games on a PC. The shadPS5 project calls its software experimental and says: “Not yet. We’re still building out the core emulation layer. Some things boot, some things render a frame or two, but it’s nowhere near playable.” That is the project’s own assessment, dated here to the page snapshot accessed October 4, 2026.

Booting a title or showing an isolated frame is not the same as completing a game session. The project page does not provide a title-by-title compatibility table with independently verified results. It therefore does not establish how many games boot, render consistently, or are playable, nor does it provide a validated minimum PC specification. Do not treat isolated demonstrations or broad claims about “compatibility” as evidence of a usable game library without dated results for specific games, builds, and host systems.
Why compatibility varies from game to game
Games can rely on different features, timing, and behavior from the console. An emulator may be able to start one title but fail to render a menu correctly, mishandle input or audio, or encounter a blocking fault later. Getting a game to boot is an early milestone; stable rendering, correct behavior, and a complete playable session are progressively stronger results.

A useful compatibility report should identify the game and version, emulator build, operating system and host hardware, and what was actually observed. It should distinguish starting, reaching a menu, rendering consistently, and playing through without blocking problems. Without that detail, a count of “working games” can hide the difference between a brief startup and reliable play. The shadPS5 page does not supply the title-by-title evidence needed to assign such counts.

Sony’s backward-compatibility statements concern PS4 games running on a PS5 console—not PS5 games running through a PC emulator. PlayStation Support says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles, while warning that some features may be unavailable and some games may show errors or unexpected behavior. Sony also lists six PS4-only titles on the support page: Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume One, Just Deal With It!, Robinson: The Journey, We Sing, Hitman Go: Definitive Edition, and Shadwen. The list may change, and Sony excludes demos, media, and non-game applications from its stated scope. PlayStation’s PS5 backward-compatibility support page describes that console feature.

Sony’s 2020 announcement said it was evaluating PS4 games title by title for issues requiring adjustment by original developers. That statement explains Sony’s own compatibility work on its console at launch; it is not evidence that third-party PC emulators can run PS5 games.
