How PR Is Shaping Visibility in AI Search Results

PR can improve the quality and reach of information AI systems may encounter, but it cannot guarantee a citation or traffic. Here’s how to build and measure an evidence-led program.

PR can help a brand appear accurately in AI-generated search answers by strengthening the information available about it across its own website and credible third-party sources. That is an influence on the information environment, not a guarantee: no placement, press release, or optimization tactic can promise a citation, higher ranking, referral, or sale. Google says its generative search features still rely on core Search systems, while reported research finds that citation sources vary by platform and prompt.

How can PR help a brand appear in AI search results?

AI-generated answers draw on information beyond a brand’s own website. Public relations can help make a company’s facts, expertise, and work easier to discover and describe by combining accurate owned resources with independent coverage and other credible references. The strongest case for PR is therefore not that it can “get a brand into AI,” but that it can improve the quality, consistency, and reach of the information systems may encounter.

Google says its generative features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems, and that established SEO practices remain relevant. Its guidance recommends useful, distinctive content and a site that is accessible and clear to Search. Google also describes query fan-out: a generative feature may run related searches to find material relevant to the original question. For communications teams, that makes topical breadth and accessible supporting evidence more useful than relying on one branded landing page. Google’s guide to generative AI features does not endorse a special shortcut for optimizing AI answers.

Owned content: control and accuracy

A company controls its newsroom, biographies, product pages, and explanatory resources. Keep those pages current, make claims specific and verifiable, identify authors where relevant, and show when information was updated. Resources that explain a topic, answer real questions, define technical terms, or present original data give readers—and potentially answer systems—more substance than pages written chiefly to repeat keywords.

Earned coverage: independent context

Journalism and other credible external sources can provide context a company cannot supply about itself. Treat coverage as an earned trust signal, not something to manufacture. A press release can distribute news, but it is not a substitute for distinctive information or independent reporting, and it does not guarantee citation.

In a 2025 analysis of more than one million prompts submitted to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, Muck Rack reported that 37% of inquiries cited external corporate blogs or content and 27% cited journalism-produced news stories. Axios reported the findings; they describe that study’s prompt set and classifications, not every AI engine or search question. The study also found different citation tendencies across platforms. Its figures support diversifying useful sources, not a causal claim that PR activity increases citations by a known amount. Axios’s report on the Muck Rack analysis discloses an Axios–OpenAI licensing and technology agreement.

What sources are AI answers citing?

The Muck Rack findings reported by Axios offer a snapshot of source categories in the study, not a universal market share. The denominator is the study’s inquiries, and the numbers should not be read as a forecast for a specific brand or platform.

Source category Share of inquiries, as reported
External corporate blogs or content 37%
Journalism-produced news stories 27%
Owned content and government or NGO websites 9%
Aggregators 7%
Academic research 6%
Social media 2%
Marketing content 2%
Press releases 1%

These categories and shares are those Axios reported from Muck Rack’s 2025 analysis of more than one million prompts to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. In the same study, 49% of objective prompts seeking recent updates or facts cited news sources. That result applies to the study’s prompt classification; it is not a general probability that a news story will appear in an AI answer.

Muck Rack senior director of data Matt Dzugan said, as quoted by Axios, “Based on the data, we can see that the models are pretty clearly avoiding marketing materials.” Muck Rack CEO Gregory Galant offered his interpretation that “recent content or news stories are what’s driving the answers.” These are attributed observations about the study, not rules that establish how all systems work.

How should a PR team build an AI-visibility program?

  1. Start with real audience questions. Include explanatory and comparative questions where the organization has relevant expertise, not only searches for its name. Keep a fixed prompt set and record variants: the wording of a prompt can affect which sources appear.
  2. Make core facts consistent and current. Check company descriptions, leadership biographies, product pages, newsroom material, and trusted external profiles. Date claims and link to supporting evidence so stale descriptions are easier to distinguish from current information.
  3. Invest in useful, distinctive material. Publish original data, expert explanation, practical resources, and newsworthy developments. Make pages easy to crawl and understand. Google’s guidance emphasizes helpful, unique content and sound SEO foundations rather than low-value content created to influence answers.
  4. Pursue coverage on its merits. Share substantiated news and expertise with relevant journalists and publications. Do not fabricate reviews, manufacture coverage, or flood the web with thin pages; evidence that external sources appear in answers does not support manipulative tactics.
  5. Audit what the answer says. Record whether the brand is mentioned, whether a source is cited, which page and domain are cited, and whether the description is accurate and up to date. A citation and a favorable or correct representation are separate questions.
  6. Repeat the audit consistently. Re-run the same prompts over time and, where relevant, across engines, markets, and languages. Note the date and system or model version when available. A single answer is a snapshot, not a stable ranking.

How do I measure whether my brand is cited by AI search?

Use separate measures for separate outcomes. A page impression in Google’s AI features is not the same as a brand mention in ChatGPT, a cited URL in another answer engine, a referral visit, or a business conversion. A dashboard that collapses those into one “AI visibility” score can obscure what changed and where.

Google Search Console’s AI-feature report

Google’s Search Console Help documents a Generative AI performance report for impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search. It can group performance by page, country, date, and device; Google defines an impression as a time a link to the site was shown in a generative AI feature. The help page says worldwide rollout was completed on August 31, 2026, but a property may not show a report if it has insufficient impressions or other eligibility issues. The newest data can be preliminary, and dates use Pacific Time. This is a Google-specific impression measure, not a report of mentions or citations across all AI platforms. Track other visibility indicators separately

  • Prompt visibility: whether the brand appears for a defined set of branded and non-branded questions.
  • Citation detail: whether an answer names the brand, links a source, and cites the brand’s own page or a third-party source.
  • Representation quality: whether factual descriptions, product details, and dates are correct.
  • Source mix: which domains and types of sources recur, with the prompt and platform recorded.
  • Business signals: referral traffic, branded demand, qualified leads, or conversions, analyzed without assuming that a citation caused them.

When comparing monitoring tools or reports, check which engines and surfaces they cover, what they count, whether prompts and locations are reproducible, and whether you can inspect the actual cited pages. Also ask whether they check accuracy rather than presenting only a composite score.

Does AI visibility mean more website traffic?

Not necessarily. A brand can be mentioned without a link, cited without a visitor clicking, or shown to an audience that does not convert. Google’s August 6, 2025 post said its aggregate organic click volume to websites was relatively stable year over year and average click quality had risen. Those are Google’s own figures and framing; they do not establish the outcome for every site, query, market, or business. Google’s statement on AI Search and clicks

PR Newswire’s State of the Press Release 2025 reported that 49% of North American communicators tracked new metrics such as AI Overviews or featured snippets, compared with 9% in EMEIA and 8% in APAC. These are survey responses about measurement practices, not rates of improved visibility. The report also found AI-tool adoption for content creation or optimization among 30% of North American, 21% of EMEIA, and 25% of APAC respondents. PR Newswire’s 2025 report

What PR can—and cannot—promise

Owned content and earned coverage complement one another. Owned pages give a company control over facts and updates; credible independent references add outside context but are less controllable. A practical program uses both, measuring discoverability, freshness, credibility, and accuracy rather than chasing a single citation count.

“GEO” and “AEO” are common industry labels for work aimed at generative or answer engines, but Google’s published guidance treats its generative features as part of Search and cautions against unsupported optimization hacks. A 2025 paper discussing generative engine optimization describes differences among systems in source diversity, freshness, language stability, and sensitivity to query phrasing; it frames machine-readable evidence and earned media as relevant, but does not prove that any one tactic reliably changes inclusion. The paper’s abstract

The available evidence does not establish a universal percentage uplift in AI citations caused by PR, or show that any press release, publication, schema markup, prompt format, or paid service can guarantee inclusion. Use communications to make accurate, useful information available in places audiences and search systems can find it, then measure each visibility and business outcome on its own terms.
