Pollen-based anti-counterfeiting is a proposed way to identify a product using two linked markers: the pollen grain’s biological shape and an optical signature associated with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanomaterials. The Osmania University concept, called PollenSignum, is described as a research-stage design—not a commercially deployed product-authentication system.
What is PollenSignum?
PollenSignum is a reported research concept associated with Osmania University in Hyderabad. A university-hosted dissertation summary describes selected pollen taxa as biological carriers for a tag, with the pollen functionalized using ZnO quantum dots. A 2026 news report describes the design as combining pollen identity with an optical or fluorescent response from ZnO nanomaterials. The approach is intended to pair a biological feature that can be examined under magnification with an optical feature that can be screened. These are separate characteristics: pollen morphology concerns the grain’s structure, especially its outer wall, while the optical signature concerns how the associated material responds to light.

How does pollen-based anti-counterfeiting work?
- Select and identify pollen. Pollen grains from different taxa can have distinguishable morphology, including differences in the exine, the outer wall. The proposed tag uses selected pollen as its biological component.
- Add an optical marker. The dissertation summary describes functionalizing pollen with ZnO quantum dots; the 2026 report attributes a measurable optical or fluorescent signal to ZnO nanomaterials.
- Register the combined reference. The design treats the pollen identity and optical response as characteristics to be registered together. The report also mentions spatial coding and a sealed micro-container as possible implementations, rather than details established for a product in use.
- Compare a sample with the reference. The described process starts with rapid optical screening and may proceed to microscopic or forensic examination. Verification would involve checking the observed features against the registered reference, rather than relying on pollen presence alone.
The available descriptions do not establish a consumer smartphone app, a particular reader, or an operational cloud database. A microscope can help examine pollen morphology, but it is not a dedicated PollenSignum reader and cannot by itself certify a tagged product as genuine.

What do the reported figures mean?
The October 3, 2026 Telangana Today report says the patent describes an initial library of 12 distinguishable pollen taxa and presents 4,096 as the number of theoretical non-empty combinations from that library. It says additional optical signatures and spatial positioning could expand the design space. These are reported design figures, not a count of combinations tested on products or proof that every combination can be produced, distinguished, and verified reliably. Telangana Today report.
Can pollen tell whether a product is genuine?
In principle, a registered combination of pollen morphology and optical response could serve as evidence to check. But the available descriptions do not establish that PollenSignum can reliably authenticate commercial products. They do not report product validation, false-acceptance or false-rejection rates, durability under normal handling, manufacturing cost, or performance when a counterfeiter attempts to copy or defeat the marker.

There is related but narrower forensic evidence. A peer-reviewed 2020 study examined authenticated genuine and known counterfeit cigarette samples using environmental pollen analysis. In the samples studied, Ambrosia pollen accounted for 39% of pollen in genuine samples, while counterfeit samples contained none or only trace amounts. That finding concerns those cigarette samples and that method; it is not a PollenSignum test result and should not be generalized to other goods. 2020 cigarette-origin pollen study.

Where might the proposed marker be used?
The 2026 report lists security documents, currency substrates, pharmaceutical packaging, jewellery, gemstones, luxury goods, certificates, collectibles, and other high-value articles as potential applications. These are proposed use cases, not evidence of adoption or commercial availability. The descriptions do not establish whether a marker would be attached to packaging or directly to each product, or how it would hold up through manufacturing, shipping, and use. How does this compare with other product markers?
The European Union Intellectual Property Office describes chemical encoding and tracers as tiny particles with distinctive physical or chemical properties. Depending on the technique, checking a tracer may require a specialized reader or laboratory decoding, and practical integration varies with the product and attachment method. When assessing any authentication approach, consider what feature is checked, what equipment and expertise verification requires, and whether results are checked locally, in a laboratory, or against a database. Also ask whether the marker is on the product or its packaging, whether it survives expected handling, and what testing establishes accuracy and resistance to counterfeiting. For PollenSignum, the available descriptions do not answer those performance questions.

Is PollenSignum available to verify products now?
The evidence describes a dissertation or research concept and a reported Indian patent application. The application details and filing and publication dates cited in the October 2026 report have not been confirmed here against the patent-office record or patent text. The available sources do not establish commercial supply-chain deployment, a verification service for consumers, or a licensing offer. Treat PollenSignum as a proposed technology, not as a feature shoppers can currently use to authenticate a purchase.
