It matters most in precise geodetic work; the available official guidance does not establish a universal phone- or car-GPS error in meters or centimeters caused by polar motion. For everyday navigation, do not adjust your location manually. For surveying or precise post-processing, check reference-frame compatibility, Earth-orientation data, and processing software.
What polar motion changes in a GPS calculation
Polar motion is the changing position of Earth’s rotation axis relative to its crust. GPS software uses Earth orientation parameters (EOPs), including polar-motion coordinates called xp and yp, when converting between coordinate frames. A satellite position may be represented in an inertial frame, while a receiver location is needed in an Earth-centered, Earth-fixed (ECEF) frame attached to Earth’s mantle. The transformation depends on Earth’s orientation at the observation time.

The GPS Interface Specification describes broadcast EOP fields in Message Type 32 and their role in that transformation. It states: “The EOPs are used to calculate UT1 (applied in the ‘Rotation to terrestrial system’ process) and the polar motion parameters, xp and yp (applied in the ‘Rotation for polar motion’ process).” — GPS Interface Specification IS-GPS-200, Revision N, §30.3.3.5.1.1 (2022).

The specification says the broadcast Message Type 32 EOPs already account for specified zonal, diurnal, and semidiurnal effects, and advises users not to apply those effects again. It also warns that EOP accuracy degrades over time when the control segment does not update the values. Adding a separate correction without checking what a receiver or processing package already applies risks applying an effect twice.

How much GPS error does polar motion cause?
There is no single supported consumer-device figure in the cited official guidance. The effect depends on the coordinate transformation and processing context, so a precise transformation correction should not be treated as the explanation for ordinary phone or car location drift.
NOAA says everyday GPS accuracy is often within a few yards, but that is a general GPS performance description, not a measurement of polar-motion error. Likewise, survey-processing accuracy figures describe a particular workflow, not the contribution of polar motion alone. GPS performance can also depend on satellite geometry, signal visibility, receiver behavior, and local conditions. See NOAA’s GPS accuracy overview.

What to do with a phone, car, or handheld GPS
Do not try to manually shift an ordinary device’s displayed position to account for polar motion. The relevant EOP handling belongs in the positioning software’s coordinate transformations. If a consumer location looks wrong, the official material cited here does not identify polar motion as a likely cause; check signal visibility and local conditions rather than applying an improvised correction.
What surveyors and precision GNSS users should check
1. Confirm the reference frames
Check the terrestrial reference frame and realization used by the observations, satellite products, and delivered coordinates. GNSS constellation orbits can be provided in different ECEF frames, and necessary transformations are generally handled by receiver software. See the NOAA National Geodetic Survey reference-frame guidance.

- Support for GPS and GLONASS satellite systems allows for tracking in more challenging environments than GPS alone
- 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a micro SD card slot
2. Check EOP source and freshness
Use processing software and EOP inputs suited to the observation date and required precision. Broadcast EOP fields support the transformation, but their accuracy can degrade if not updated. The U.S. Naval Observatory describes daily rapid GNSS solutions and ultra-rapid products with EOP estimates and predictions produced four times daily; product selection should follow the processing specification and required epoch and accuracy, not an assumption that one source is always best. See the USNO Earth orientation products.
When comparing available inputs, consider freshness and latency, whether predictions are included, and whether the software implements the required transformation and reference-frame realization.

3. Check antenna setup and field conditions
Do not attribute every discrepancy to Earth orientation. NOAA OPUS warns that selecting the wrong antenna can produce a height error as large as 80 cm and a horizontal error up to 1 cm. It also flags antenna reference-point entry, multipath, and adverse atmospheric conditions as practical concerns. These are workflow warnings, not estimates of polar-motion error. See NOAA’s OPUS guidance.
4. Match the processing service to the job
For U.S. geodetic post-processing, OPUS accepts static dual-frequency GPS carrier-phase observations from survey-grade equipment, subject to session-duration and data-format requirements. NOAA says many positions under normal conditions can be computed within a few centimeters, while cautioning that an individual solution’s accuracy is hard to estimate and user errors may go undetected. Those statements describe OPUS and its workflow—not the size of polar-motion effects.
