Sword and Shield introduced the Wild Area as a large, free-camera space within a still-structured region; Legends: Arceus built exploration around expeditions and research; and Scarlet and Violet made towns and wilderness part of one seamless region with three story paths players can pursue in their chosen order. Legends: Z-A experiments with a different format: a city organized around contained wild zones.
How Pokémon’s open-world design changed
The key shift is not simply that the maps got bigger. Each game changed how areas connect, what players do while exploring, and how exploration relates to progression.

Sword and Shield: a free-roaming area inside a structured region
The Wild Area was a major open-area step for the series, but it did not make all of Galar one open world. It is a large stretch of wilderness linking towns and cities within a region that retains structured progression. The official Wild Area description highlights camera control and Pokémon encounters that vary by location and weather.

The distinction matters: the Wild Area was an open space within the region, not a description of the whole game world.
#1 Best Overall
- Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
- Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
- Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
- Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
- Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.
Legends: Arceus: exploration as field research
Legends: Arceus changes the exploration loop by making Jubilife Village a base for expeditions into separate natural areas. Rather than traversing one continuous region from town to wilderness, players set out to survey a specific area and return to the hub.
Field study is part of progression. Players observe Pokémon, catch them directly or enter seamless battles, and complete research tasks that contribute to Pokédex progress. Raising research rank opens access to more areas, tying what players do in the field to where they can go next. This structure is described in the game’s official overview and gameplay information.
Rank #2
- Action meets RPG in this new take on the Pokémon series
- Study Pokémon behaviors, sneak up on them, and toss a well-aimed Poké Ball to catch them
- Unleash moves in the speedy agile style or the powerful strong style in battles
- Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
- Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale
Scarlet and Violet: continuous terrain and player-chosen story order
Scarlet and Violet make the broader region seamless: towns blend into wilderness without borders, and Pokémon appear throughout the region. The other major change is greater choice in the order of main objectives. Players can weave freely among Victory Road, Path of Legends, and Starfall Street, rather than being confined to one prescribed sequence of story paths. Koraidon or Miraidon helps with traversal across the terrain.
Nintendo describes the games as open-world titles in its official game information and 2022 announcement. Pokémon Scarlet was released on November 18, 2022, according to its Nintendo US listing, which identifies GAME FREAK as the developer.

Legends: Z-A: a city built around wild zones
Legends: Z-A offers another exploration format rather than simply extending the Paldea-style open region. Its setting is Lumiose City, where constructed wild zones provide places to find and catch Pokémon. The official gameplay information says catching can happen by throwing a Poké Ball while exploring; some Pokémon flee, making approach and stealth relevant. Battle zones appear at night.
Here, exploration is shaped by a city and its defined activity zones. That differs both from a bounded wilderness embedded in a structured region and from a single seamless landscape connecting towns and wild areas.

What “open world” means across these games
The series does not use one fixed formula for open exploration. The practical differences are in how the world is divided and how players advance:

These official descriptions establish differences in structure and activity, but they do not quantify map size, technical performance, or critical reception. They support a design comparison, not a claim that each new game simply has a larger or better world.
