How Point-and-Shoot Cameras Make Taking Photos Simple

A point-and-shoot camera is built around simple shooting, with automatic focus and exposure doing much of the work. The label often overlaps with compact camera, but does not define every feature.

A point-and-shoot camera is designed to make taking a picture simple: frame the subject, press the shutter, and let the camera handle much of the focusing and exposure automatically. The term often overlaps with “compact camera,” but it describes ease of operation more than a strict set of hardware features.

What “point-and-shoot” means

“Point-and-shoot” describes a straightforward way to take photos, and often the cameras designed for that use. In an automatic mode, the camera chooses settings such as focus and exposure for the scene so the photographer can concentrate on framing the picture.

The phrase can also describe a mode on a camera that is not itself a compact point-and-shoot. Nikon’s D7100 manual, for example, uses it for AUTO and flash-off modes in which “the majority of settings are controlled by the camera in response to shooting conditions.” Nikon D7100 manual

How a point-and-shoot camera works

In automatic operation, the camera evaluates the scene and sets many of the exposure and focusing choices for you. A typical shot goes like this:

  1. Turn on the camera and choose an automatic or scene mode.
  2. Frame the subject on the screen or through the viewfinder, if the camera has one.
  3. Adjust the zoom if the lens offers it.
  4. Half-press the shutter button to focus, then press it fully to take the picture.

Controls vary by model, and some cameras can focus when you press the shutter fully rather than requiring a half-press. Canon Australia describes the general compact-camera workflow as turning the camera on, choosing a mode, framing, adjusting zoom if desired, half-pressing to focus, and taking the picture. Is a point-and-shoot the same as a compact camera?

The terms are commonly used interchangeably, but they emphasize different things. “Point-and-shoot” highlights simple operation; “compact camera” generally refers to a small, self-contained camera with a built-in lens. A built-in or fixed lens is not interchangeable with other lenses, but it can still zoom between focal lengths.

Compact does not necessarily mean automatic-only. Fujifilm’s X30 manual calls AUTO “A simple ‘point-and-shoot’ mode recommended for first-time users of digital cameras,” while explaining that the camera also has other modes in which users can choose exposure settings. What the term does not tell you

The name alone does not establish a camera’s sensor size, zoom range, viewfinder, flash, image quality, or available controls. Those features depend on the individual model. Likewise, calling a camera point-and-shoot does not mean it can only be used automatically: a model may provide manual or priority modes alongside automatic shooting.
