Your PlayStation account can show trophy information on both PS4 and PS5, but that does not mean every game’s PS4 and PS5 versions share a trophy list or that trophies automatically unlock in both versions. Sony’s general guidance does not set a universal rule: check the exact game’s trophy lists and official information before choosing a version or expecting progress to carry over.
Do PS4 and PS5 versions have separate trophy lists?
It depends on the game. Sony says trophy objectives, counts, grades and conditions vary by game, but its general support guidance does not establish that paired PS4 and PS5 versions always share one list—or always have separate lists. It also does not promise that earning a trophy in one version will unlock it in the other.

To inspect trophies on PS5, open your profile’s Trophies area, select a game, then select a trophy to view its details. That shows the trophies associated with the game on your account; it is not a guarantee about how another version of the game handles them. Do PS4 trophies transfer to PS5?
Sony instructs players preparing to move to PS5 to sign in with the same account and synchronize trophy information. This is about making account trophy information available; it does not mean every PS5 version of a game will award its trophies again for achievements previously earned in the PS4 version.

Keep three separate things in mind: the trophies recorded on your account, the game version you launch, and the game’s saved progress. They are related, but one does not prove how the others behave. In particular, a save that transfers between versions is not evidence that trophies will auto-unlock.
How to choose the PS4 or PS5 version on PS5
If both versions are available, PS5 lets you choose which one to launch from the Game Library. Select Game Library > the game > Options (…) > Select Version. The exact options depend on the title and what you own.

Launching a compatible PS4 game on PS5 is different from installing a native PS5 version. Sony says the majority of PS4 games are playable on PS5, while PlayStation Store identifies incompatible titles as Playable on: PS4 only. If you are considering an upgrade
An upgrade offer is distinct from choosing to play a compatible PS4 version. Eligible digital PS4 games may have an upgrade offer. An eligible PS4 disc can be upgraded to a digital PS5 version on a PS5 with a disc drive; the disc must be inserted each time you play that upgraded digital game. PS4 discs cannot be used in the PS5 Digital Edition. Sony also says PS4 games redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit are not eligible for an upgrade unless otherwise indicated. Check the game’s offer and conditions rather than assuming an upgrade is included. Sony’s upgrade instructions describe the options.

Saved-data transfer is a separate question
Sony says whether saved data can move between the PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game is decided by the developer and varies by title. As PlayStation put it in its October 9, 2020 article, “the ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision, and will vary title by title for cross-generational games.” That statement concerns saves—not shared trophy lists or automatic trophy unlocks. For console-to-console preparation, Sony’s transfer guide says to use the same account, update system software, synchronize trophy information, and connect both consoles to the same network. The guide covers transfer of PS4 saved data for games playable on PS5 and saved data for games playable on PS5; after initial setup, PS4 saved-data transfer is limited to the logged-in user. What to check before choosing a version for trophies
- Identify the version you will launch. On PS5, distinguish the PS4 version from the native PS5 version using the Game Library’s version selector.
- Check the game’s trophy lists. Look for the exact PS4 and PS5 entries in the console’s Trophies area or other directly viewable trophy-list data. Confirm whether the lists are shared or separate.
- Verify auto-unlock behavior for that title. Use the game’s official information where available; do not infer it from account synchronization or a transferred save.
- Check save migration separately. Confirm whether the developer supports transfer between the versions and what steps the game requires.
- Review upgrade and ownership conditions. If you want the PS5 version, check whether an upgrade is offered and whether it requires a disc or has other eligibility terms.
Without title-specific confirmation, the dependable answer is that trophy visibility and synchronization are account-level matters, while cross-version lists and automatic unlocks are not established as universal PlayStation rules.
