There is no evidence-based universal winner. “Plastic-derived,” “food-waste-derived” and “biomass-derived” carbon quantum dots are broad groups, not standardized materials. Which performs better depends on the exact precursor, how the dots are made and processed, and the application and measurements being compared.
What the labels mean—and why they do not determine performance
The labels identify the starting material, not a finished product with fixed properties. Plastic waste can vary in composition, while food-waste-derived dots may start with plant byproducts, animal food byproducts or food-processing byproducts. Biomass is also a broad category; food waste is one kind of biomass feedstock.

A 2023 Royal Society of Chemistry review considers carbon dots made from both biomass and plastic wastes, while a 2025 Springer Nature critical review emphasizes that food-waste dot properties depend on the precursor, synthesis method, particle size and processing parameters. Those differences make it unsafe to predict performance from the feedstock label alone.
What can—and cannot—be compared
The reviews do not establish a standardized head-to-head test across plastic, food-waste and other biomass feedstocks. They therefore do not support a general ranking by yield, quantum yield, particle size, toxicity or overall quality. A number measured for one particular sample and method would not, by itself, describe every dot in its feedstock family.

Note: Do not wash it in the dishwasher. For improved durability, this pitcher is designed with a sturdy plastic inner liner
- [5-stage filtration for cleaner water] This water filter pitcher adopts 5-stage filtration materials, including advanced carbon fiber, ion exchange resin, and activated carbon block. Tested by a third-party lab, it helps reduce chlorine, mercury, taste and odor, copper, cadmium, PFOA/PFOS, sand, sediment, and large particles. Note: This system DOES NOT lower TDS value. If you prefer a low TDS value, please choose the Waterdrop TDS Reduction Glass Pitcher by searching PT-13W on Amazon
- [NSF/ANSI 42, 53 & 372 certified filter] The filter used in this glass pitcher is certified against NSF/ANSI 42 for reducing chlorine, taste, and odor; NSF/ANSI 53 for reducing mercury; and NSF/ANSI 372 for lead-free materials, helping provide reliable filtration performance for everyday drinking water
- [Long life & fast flow rate] The filter lasts up to 100 gallons or 2 months, whichever comes first based on local water conditions. With a fast flow rate of 8.5 oz/min, this 7-cup glass water filter pitcher fills an 8 oz cup in less than 1 minute, helping reduce waiting time for fresh filtered water
- What exactly was used as the precursor? Record the material and its composition, not just “plastic” or “biomass.”
- How were the dots made? Record the synthesis route and conditions. A method demonstrated for one biomass waste should not be assumed to suit another precursor.
- How were they processed and characterized? Differences in purification, characterization and processing can affect what is measured. The reviewed literature identifies standardization as a challenge.
- Which property matters to the job? Specify the measurement and test conditions, then compare candidates on that property rather than on a general claim of being “better.”
- What does the intended application require? For a sensing task, for example, assess the relevant sensing performance; an application reported in a review is not proof that every material in that feedstock family will work equally well.
- What safety evidence matches the intended exposure? Look for toxicity evidence relevant to the material, dose and exposure route. Feedstock origin alone does not establish safety.
What the application examples actually show
Food-waste-derived dots have been reviewed for food-safety sensing, including detection of food additives and heavy metal ions. Reviews also describe wider research applications for waste-derived dots, and a 2023 Royal Society of Chemistry study examines biomass-waste dots as potential bioimaging agents.

So, which carbon dots are better?
Neither feedstock family can be called better in general on the evidence available in these reviews. A defensible choice requires particular candidate materials, a defined application and comparable measurements. Without those, claims that plastic-derived, food-waste-derived or other biomass-derived dots are inherently superior—or inherently safer—go beyond what the cited literature establishes.
