Photo-induced force microscopy (PiFM) can show what a nanoscale feature is made of by combining an atomic force microscope (AFM) with optical excitation. It maps local chemical or vibrational contrast alongside surface topography, helping analysts distinguish material boundaries or contaminants that may look alike in a height image. A chemical map can identify a feature’s material signature; by itself, it cannot prove that the feature caused an electrical failure.
What PiFM measures
PiFM raster-scans a sharp AFM tip over a sample while illuminating the area. The tip concentrates the optical near field at its apex, locally polarizing the material. That interaction produces a small force on the cantilever, which can be inferred from changes in its oscillation behavior and mapped across the surface.

When the illumination wavelength is selected to probe a material’s absorption, the force map can carry chemical or molecular-vibrational contrast as well as topographic information. A 2022 tutorial review in Chemical Society Reviews describes forces in the piconewton range or less and discusses both dipole-dipole and photothermal contributions. The signal should not be treated as arising from only one of those mechanisms in every measurement.

The distinction matters: a conventional height map describes surface shape, while PiFM can add a location-specific response associated with the material’s optical absorption. The approach can therefore help separate two features with similar morphology but different chemistry.

What semiconductor materials and structures have been mapped
A 2018 semiconductor-focused paper by Sung Park, Derek Nowak, and Tom Albrecht, published in the ASM International ISTFA proceedings, describes PiFM as combining IR spectroscopy with AFM for concurrent topography and chemical mapping. The paper identifies semiconductor materials including Si3N4, SiO2, SiGe, and low-k dielectrics, and presents examples involving directed self-assembly, strain in a SiGe/SiO2 structure, and photoresist.
For the examples presented in that proceedings paper, the authors report approximately 10 nm spatial resolution. That is evidence of the scale demonstrated in those experiments, not a guaranteed resolution for every material, instrument, or sample.

Adjacent device research illustrates the broader use of PiFM without substituting for semiconductor-specific evidence. An ACS Nano study of an all-polymer solar cell mapped donor and acceptor domains at resolution approaching 10 nm. In that particular system, AFM topography and phase correlated poorly with PiFM contrast, showing why shape alone may not establish the chemistry of nanoscale domains. A 2023 paper also reports chemical features in electrochromic devices, biosensors, solar cells, and plasmonic nanoparticles.

A Molecular Vista-sponsored AZoM article dated October 5, 2026, describes the Vista 300 Review PiFM and advertises sub-5 nm imaging capability. It illustrates vendor-attributed wafer-particle identifications including a 15 nm Teflon particle and a 5 nm PSL particle. These are product demonstrations and performance claims reported in sponsored material, not independent validation across semiconductor defect types.
Resolution claims need to stay tied to their evidence. The approximately 10 nm figure comes from the 2018 ISTFA semiconductor examples; the sub-5 nm claim comes from Molecular Vista’s 2026 sponsored article. Neither establishes a universal minimum detectable defect size. The result in a particular case depends on the experiment and its sample and setup conditions.
How PiFM fits alongside SEM/EDX
PiFM and SEM/EDX provide different kinds of information. In the workflow described by Molecular Vista’s sponsored AZoM article, SEM/EDX is used for higher-throughput classification, while PiFM is a targeted follow-up for small or organic features that need more localized chemical identification. This is a source-specific workflow, not a universal ranking of the instruments.
| Review question | PiFM | SEM/EDX |
|---|---|---|
| What information is measured? | AFM topography plus optical near-field force contrast that can carry chemical or vibrational information. | Electron microscopy provides imaging; energy-dispersive X-ray analysis provides elemental information. |
| Where can it help? | Targeted nanoscale chemical mapping, including small or organic defects, as described in the Molecular Vista-sponsored AZoM article (October 5, 2026). | Higher-throughput defect classification in the workflow described by that same sponsored article. |
| Reported workflow rate | About two minutes per defect, or roughly 30 defects per hour, in the vendor account; the rate is conditional on coordinate accuracy. | The vendor account describes SEM/EDX as having about an order-of-magnitude higher throughput than its Vista 300 automated nano-defect review workflow. This is not a general benchmark for all tools or sites. |
| Potential sample concern | The cited sources do not establish a universal damage profile for PiFM. | The vendor article warns that electron-beam analysis can damage small or organic defects; that outcome depends on the sample and analysis conditions and is not established for every SEM/EDX setup. |
The practical trade-off is targeted chemical specificity versus broad screening speed. If the question is whether a tiny feature contains a particular chemical signature, PiFM may add information that an elemental analysis alone does not provide. Molecular Vista’s article specifically notes that very small signals and organic materials can be difficult to identify chemically by elemental analysis alone; treat that as the vendor’s rationale, not a claim that SEM/EDX is unsuitable in general.

What a PiFM chemical map does not prove
A PiFM map can support an interpretation that a localized feature has a particular chemical or vibrational response, or that a material boundary is present. It does not, on its own, establish that the feature caused a yield loss, altered device behavior, or created a specific electronic trap state. Those are causal or electrical conclusions beyond what the cited PiFM outputs—chemical maps, vibrational spectra, and topography—show.
- Use the chemical contrast to identify and locate a material feature, with interpretation tied to the measurement conditions.
- Use electrical, process, or complementary materials evidence to test whether that feature explains device behavior or failure.
- Do not treat a resolution figure from one demonstration or vendor claim as a universal guarantee for another sample.
The 2025 Nature Reviews Methods Primers overview discusses PiFM limitations and optimization. The available semiconductor-focused examples do not establish an exhaustive list of error sources or a single resolution applicable to all implementations.
