PickOpenSource is a curated directory that organizes open-source software around the job you need to do, then surfaces practical questions such as licensing, hosting options and repository activity. Its builder, Ashish Sharma, describes it as an alternative to choosing projects mainly by GitHub star counts; the catalog and features below are those he reported on October 5, 2026, not an independently verified snapshot of the live site.
Why look beyond GitHub stars?
Stars can indicate interest, but they do not tell you whether a project fits your task, can be deployed the way you need, or has a license suitable for your use. Sharma says he built PickOpenSource after finding popular projects that had an unsuitable license, were difficult to self-host, or appeared abandoned. As he puts it, “GitHub stars don’t always reflect what I actually need in a project.”

That is the directory’s central idea: start with the problem to solve, then compare candidates using adoption factors that affect whether you can actually use and operate them.
How PickOpenSource is organized
In his October 5, 2026 article, Sharma reported that the directory had more than 200 curated projects, with category browsing, alternatives pages, project comparisons and repository activity information. These are author-reported details, not a verified count or feature audit of the current site.
#1 Best Overall
- Categories: Browse software grouped around a task or type of tool.
- Alternatives pages: Find candidates through searches framed as “open source alternative to X,” including “open-source Google Analytics alternatives.”
- Comparisons: Examine head-to-head topics such as “Umami vs Plausible.”
- Repository activity: Use activity information as one input alongside fit, license and hosting model.
The intended journey is from a job to be done to a category, and from there to a closer comparison of projects that might meet it.
What to check before adopting a project
Problem fit
Confirm that the software addresses the task you have, rather than assuming a popular project is the right one. A directory entry is a starting point; check the project’s own documentation to establish whether it supports your requirements.
License
Read the license for the exact project and version you plan to use. Sharma points to MIT, Apache, AGPL and custom licenses as examples that may affect adoption. Their obligations differ, and suitability depends on how you intend to use or distribute the software. PickOpenSource is not a substitute for the license text or legal advice.

Hosting arrangement
Distinguish among software you can self-host, a project that also offers a managed version, and a managed product whose repository is open source. These options can involve different deployment work, control and customization. Verify the available hosting choices with the project itself before committing.

Maintenance signals
Repository activity can help you investigate whether a project is being worked on, but it is not a complete health score. Sharma says the directory obtains GitHub API information roughly every 24 hours. His article does not specify all captured fields or independently validate that cadence, so inspect the repository directly and assess the signals that matter to your use.
Compare operational trade-offs, not just feature lists
When two candidates both appear to solve the problem, make the operational choice explicit. One may be easier to self-host; another may offer managed hosting and require less customization. The better option depends on whether you value control and deployment flexibility more than reduced maintenance work.
- Write down the task and the capabilities you actually require.
- Check each candidate’s license and confirm it works for your intended use.
- Determine whether it is self-hostable, offers a managed version, or is primarily managed.
- Review repository activity and project documentation rather than treating stars as a verdict.
- Compare setup effort, ongoing operations and customization before choosing.
What the directory does not establish
Sharma describes PickOpenSource as an early project and says stronger decision guidance remains an area to improve. He would like to offer more specific recommendations—for example, which candidate is easier to self-host and which provides managed hosting with less customization. The reported repository activity and catalog are useful discovery aids, but the article does not describe a comprehensive project-health rating or prove that every entry has been independently audited.

That is his description of the project’s approach as of October 5, 2026; the article does not establish current sponsorship terms or independently verify how placements appear today.

It is most relevant when you know the job you need done but want a more practical shortlist than a ranking by stars alone. Use its categories and alternatives to discover candidates, then validate licensing, hosting and maintenance in each project’s primary documentation and repository. Sharma invites readers to suggest future pages, asking, “What SaaS alternatives pages would you like to see?”
