NASA’s Perseverance is already exploring Jezero Crater and caching selected samples for possible return to Earth. ESA’s Rosalind Franklin rover is planned to launch in 2028, land at Oxia Planum in 2030, drill as deep as two metres, and analyse samples on Mars. The missions pursue related questions about life’s possibility on Mars, but use different locations, sampling depths and analysis plans—and neither has confirmed a discovery of life.

Why the rovers are searching in different places
Perseverance: Jezero’s ancient lake and delta
Perseverance’s mission includes assessing whether Jezero Crater could have supported microbial life in the distant past and looking for potential evidence that life may once have existed. Its work also examines the crater’s geology and habitability. The ancient lake and delta deposits made Jezero a compelling place to investigate rocks shaped by past water.

The rover uses instruments to examine those rocks in place. SHERLOC helps study organic matter and minerals, while PIXL maps rock chemistry at fine scale. These measurements help scientists understand the geological context of collected material; they do not, by themselves, make a finding of life.

ESA describes Rosalind Franklin’s primary science objective as searching for signs of past and present life while characterizing the shallow subsurface. Oxia Planum’s clay-rich deposits formed in the presence of liquid water, giving the rover a different geological record to investigate. ESA’s rover overview describes the planned landing region and scientific payload.

Which rover will drill deeper?
Rosalind Franklin is designed to drill as deep as two metres below the surface, according to ESA’s rover overview. The depth matters because subsurface material may be better protected from radiation and surface conditions than material exposed at the surface. It is a design capability, not a result from Mars: Rosalind Franklin has not yet launched.
Perseverance collects cores from selected rocks it reaches at the surface. The cited NASA material describes its coring and caching strategy but does not provide a directly comparable maximum drilling depth. So the supported distinction is that Rosalind Franklin is explicitly designed to access material up to two metres down, while Perseverance’s approach centers on exposed rocks and intact cores.

What happens to samples after collection?
Perseverance caches selected samples for possible return
Perseverance drills intact rock cores and places selected cores and other material in sealed tubes. The idea is to preserve samples for possible retrieval and detailed study on Earth. NASA presents sample return as a future mission objective, not a guarantee that the cached tubes will be brought back. Caching samples is a collection strategy, not evidence that they contain life.

The mission sources describe goals, instruments and sampling methods; they do not establish a confirmed detection of life by either rover. Searching for biosignatures—possible traces associated with life—is not the same as confirming that life existed. Nor do the cited sources provide comparable probabilities of success, so the difference in drill depth or sample handling does not establish that one rover is more likely to find life.

How to interpret the comparison
- Perseverance is the active field explorer: it investigates Jezero’s ancient lake-and-delta setting, analyses rocks with rover instruments and caches selected material for possible future return.
- Rosalind Franklin is the planned subsurface investigator: it is intended to explore clay-rich Oxia Planum deposits, drill up to two metres and analyse samples onboard.
- The approaches are complementary, not a contest: they target different geological settings and use different sampling strategies. The available mission descriptions do not establish a winner in the search for life.
