Pau Cubarsí is a regular Barcelona centre-back whose clearest documented distinction is his ability to bring the ball out from defence. Jules Koundé offers a different profile, with explicit centre-back and full-back flexibility; Ronald Araújo, Andreas Christensen and Eric García are also centre-back options. The available figures show usage, not a defensible ranking of who is best.
Where Cubarsí fits at Barcelona
Barcelona describes Cubarsí as “a centre back who provides leadership and decisiveness in defence, while also being able to bring the ball out.” That is the club’s characterization, rather than an independent measurement of his passing or defensive performance. Its profile records 56 appearances in 2024/25, then 48 appearances in the following season, including 45 starts. FC Barcelona’s player profile

As a live, narrower snapshot, LaLiga’s 2026/27 season page listed Cubarsí with five matches, 422 minutes and five starts when accessed on 4 October 2026. That total can change as the season progresses; it should not be read as a full-season record or compared with totals from other seasons. LaLiga’s Cubarsí season page
How the other centre-back options compare
Jules Koundé: the clearest role contrast
Koundé is the best-documented contrast to Cubarsí in the available profiles. Barcelona identifies him as a centre-back who can also play full-back, and highlights his one-on-one defending, comfort defending high and recovery pace. Those traits describe a flexible defender who can cover more than one role; they do not establish that he is a better centre-back than Cubarsí.
#1 Best Overall
Barcelona lists 47 appearances, three goals and four assists for Koundé in 2025/26. Because he can play both centre-back and full-back, these are season totals across his flexible role, not centre-back-only output. FC Barcelona’s Koundé profile
Araújo, Christensen and Eric García: options, but not enough evidence for a trait-by-trait ranking
Barcelona’s squad listing includes Christensen and Eric García among its defenders, and Araújo’s profile identifies him as a defender. Those labels establish squad membership, not that each player is used exclusively at centre-back. FC Barcelona’s first-team squad
A dated lineup example helps explain how the options have been used, without serving as a current depth chart. AS reported on 10 September 2025 that Hansi Flick paired Cubarsí with Araújo in the first two league rounds of 2025/26, then selected Eric García with Christensen against Rayo. The report described defensive problems in both pairings as collective, pointing to pressure and concentration as well as the work of the centre-backs. It does not support attributing those problems to one player or ranking the defenders. AS’s 10 September 2025 report

Appearance and start counts offer useful context about selection and availability. They are not a like-for-like performance test: the figures cover different seasons and, for Koundé, a flexible role. The available sources do not provide a consistent comparison across all five players for minutes-adjusted passing, progression, aerial duels, defensive duels or errors. A statistical winner on those measures cannot be established from these figures.
Rank #3
Who should partner Cubarsí?
The evidence does not support naming one automatic partner. Barcelona has selected Cubarsí with Araújo and has also used an Eric García–Christensen pairing, but the September 2025 report is a historical example, not a present-day selection guide. The most responsible comparison is therefore about roles and choices: Koundé brings documented positional flexibility and recovery pace; Cubarsí’s club profile emphasizes bringing the ball out; the available sources do not provide enough comparable individual evidence to characterize the others further or declare a best pairing.
To judge a particular pairing, compare the same competition and season, account for minutes and position, and use consistent definitions for defensive and passing metrics. Without that common basis, appearances and a few lineup examples describe how defenders have been used, not which combination is strongest.
