A passkey created for one service cannot simply be used on a look-alike site, because the authenticator checks the site’s identity during sign-in. That blocks a common attack in which someone tricks you into typing a password or one-time code into a fake page—but it does not make every account takeover route impossible.
Why a fake website cannot simply steal and reuse a passkey
A passkey uses a public/private key pair rather than a shared secret that you type into a sign-in form. The service stores the public key; your authenticator uses the private key to produce a cryptographic response when you sign in. The private key is not handed to the website as a password would be. The FIDO Alliance describes this approach as public-key cryptography for phishing-resistant authentication (FIDO Alliance specifications).

The key protection is verifier-name binding: the credential is associated with the service’s relying party identity. In a passkey sign-in, the authenticator checks that identity, and the response includes the relying party ID and origin for the service to verify. A look-alike domain is a different verifier, so it cannot obtain a response valid for the legitimate site just by copying its logo or login screen. The FIDO Alliance explains this mechanism in its technical overview of passkeys and phishing prevention.
This differs from a password or one-time code: a person can be persuaded to enter those into a convincing fake page, where an attacker may capture and relay them. Passkey authentication is designed to prevent that credential-phishing path at the protocol level.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
What passkeys do—and do not—protect against
A passkey protects the authentication ceremony against a site impersonating the service for which the passkey was created. It is not a general-purpose scam detector, and it cannot by itself prevent every account compromise. It does not stop a malicious attachment, a fake support call, or an attacker who has compromised a device. Nor does adding a passkey necessarily remove other ways to access or recover an account.
Coverage depends on the service’s full sign-in and recovery setup. If a service still allows a phishable password, code, or recovery path, an attacker may target that weaker route instead. The FIDO Alliance discusses the deployment implications in its Part 2 and Part 3 papers. Google also notes that adding a passkey does not change or remove existing authentication or recovery factors.

Synced and device-bound passkeys: different trade-offs
These terms describe where a passkey can be used, not whether it resists phishing. Microsoft Entra documentation describes the distinction as follows:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Type | Where it can be used | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Device-bound | Stored on one physical device. | Provides a tighter boundary around the device holding the credential; portability is more limited. |
| Synced | Made available on other authenticated devices through a passkey provider. | Offers portability across devices. Microsoft describes synced passkeys as phishing-resistant, while noting a different attestation and security-management posture from device-bound credentials. |
Neither type is universally the right choice. For personal use, portability may matter more; an organization may require stricter control over which physical devices can hold credentials. Microsoft Entra provides controls for organizations to enable and enforce passkey types. See Microsoft’s passkey documentation for its product-specific details.

Do you need a separate security key?
No. A passkey may be held by a supported device or passkey provider; a separate FIDO2 hardware security key is an optional way to use passkeys. Google lists FIDO2 security keys among supported passkey devices (Google Account Help). Check the service’s compatibility requirements before choosing a particular device or provider.

What to check on your account
- Confirm the service supports passkeys on your devices and with your preferred passkey provider.
- Review fallback sign-in methods and recovery options. A passkey cannot protect routes that remain vulnerable to phishing.
- If this is a work or school account, check your organization’s passkey policy; it may control which passkey types are allowed or required.
