Paperwork is a personal document manager for Linux and Windows that brings document importing or scanning, labels, keywords, and search into one workflow. You can use it to organize files already on your computer; a scanner is optional and matters only if you also want to digitize paper records.
What Paperwork does
Paperwork is designed to help you collect personal documents and retrieve them later, rather than create or edit them like a general-purpose office suite. Its project describes a workflow for scanning or importing documents and finding them again, using common standards including JPEG, hOCR, and PDF. OpenPaperwork’s project page describes the app as a personal document manager.

A ZDNET article published August 28, 2026, reports support for PDF, DOCX, ODT, and other files, along with OCR, scanner support, page-orientation detection, quick scan edits, labels, and keyword suggestions. That is the article’s feature description, not a complete or current official compatibility list. Check the project’s current information against the formats and scanner you intend to use.

- Bring documents in. Import files already on your computer, or scan paper records if you have a supported scanner setup. The project describes both routes; you do not need a scanner to use Paperwork for existing digital files.
- Add useful labels and keywords. In the document properties, use labels and keywords to describe what a file concerns. The ZDNET account also reports suggested labels and keywords; consider suggestions a convenience, then verify they suit your filing system.
- Search when you need a document. The same account describes searching filenames and document text, filtering by label or date, and combining search criteria. Text-based retrieval depends on OCR being available and working for the document; a filename or label remains useful when text recognition is unavailable or incomplete.
- Export when needed. ZDNET also reports an export option. Check the app’s current controls and output behavior for your version before relying on a particular export workflow.
Who may find it useful
- Students and writers: Labels and search can help keep notes, readings, and reference documents retrievable as a collection grows.
- Professionals managing personal records: A searchable archive can reduce dependence on remembering where a file was saved or what it was named.
- People digitizing paper: Scanning can bring paper records into the same organization workflow, provided their scanner works with their system.
- People who only need file storage: If ordinary folders and your operating system’s search already meet your needs, Paperwork’s added indexing and labeling workflow may not be necessary.
Platforms, downloads, and OCR considerations
The ZDNET article identifies Linux and Windows versions. OpenPaperwork provides a GNU/Linux page, and Paperwork is also listed on Flathub. For Windows, consult the project’s current download instructions and prefer its installer guidance over assuming that every available archive is self-contained.

The project’s release notes warn specifically that the paperwork_x.y.z_win64.zip archive includes Paperwork but not Tesseract or its language data, which OCR requires; the note recommends using the installer instead. This is a warning about that archive, not proof that every installer or release has identical requirements. The release page’s version 1.2 notes do not establish that 1.2 is the current release. Check the release notes and current download instructions for the version you plan to install.
Privacy and file handling
In the August 28, 2026 ZDNET article, Jack Wallen describes Paperwork as local-only and says that imported files were copied into ~/papers without changing the originals. Treat these as his reported observations, not as a guarantee for every version, setup, or file operation. They do not replace a backup, and anyone handling sensitive records should confirm the behavior of their installed version before importing important files.

What to check before adopting it
- Confirm that your Linux or Windows system is supported by the current download route.
- Check whether the file formats you rely on are supported; the project’s named standards are not a complete compatibility matrix.
- If you need document-text search, confirm OCR is installed and has the language data relevant to your documents.
- If scanning is central to your workflow, verify that your scanner integrates with Paperwork on your specific system. The available information does not provide a model-by-model compatibility list.
- Decide whether you want to organize existing digital files, digitize paper, or do both; scanning is optional.
