Re-encoding a Plex library can reduce the space its video files use, but “half empty again” is not a result to count on: the only specific savings figure in the available product information is a vendor example, not a guarantee. An automated library job also differs from Plex’s on-the-fly playback transcoding, and it needs temporary working space before replacement files are written.
What a library re-encode does—and what Plex playback transcoding does not
A library re-encode processes media files in storage and may replace the originals with newly encoded versions. Unmanic describes itself as open-source software for automating library organization and conversion; its documentation says it can use FFmpeg to compress media and remove streams, attachments, or metadata that are not needed. Tdarr describes a different software option for automating media-library transcode and remux tasks using conditions and workers. Its examples include H.264-to-H.265 conversion and CPU or GPU workers using FFmpeg or HandBrake. The title alone does not identify which tool was used, so neither should be presented as the tool behind a particular overnight result. Tdarr

Plex playback transcoding is separate: Plex says it converts a file automatically when a client cannot play its source format. This can be CPU-intensive, and Plex notes that temporary transcode storage can use gigabytes when multiple sessions are running. That playback process does not mean Plex is re-encoding the whole library and replacing its stored files. Plex: Transcoding Media

It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
How much space might H.265 save?
Tdarr’s product page claims that converting video from H.264 to H.265 can save 50% in file size. Treat that as Tdarr’s example, not as a measured result for a specific library or a promise for every file. Actual output depends on the source and encoding choices, and a smaller file is only useful if its visible quality remains acceptable. Tdarr
There is no independent, named statistic here that establishes typical library-wide savings or quality loss. Community posts use phrases such as “reencoding my entire library” and “save hard drive space,” but anecdotes do not establish a representative percentage or quality outcome. Why the job needs space before it saves space
Tdarr documents a workflow in which a file is transcoded into a cache folder, then copied back into the source library to replace the original. During processing, the original and the new file may both need space, along with the cache and other working files. A job can therefore require temporary headroom even when its final result is smaller. Tdarr says a low-cost SSD can be used for the transcode cache, but it does not give a universally sufficient cache capacity. Tdarr: Storage

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not equate the temporary cache requirement with the eventual amount reclaimed. The amount of headroom needed depends on the files being processed and the workflow; check the tool’s own storage guidance and monitor the volume during a small initial batch before scheduling a large library run.

Check which storage Plex is using
If the drive’s free-space change does not match the apparent size of the video library, first confirm the volume and directory being measured. Plex’s server data directory can contain databases, metadata, artwork, and caches, not just media. Plex specifically identifies preview thumbnails and downloads as possible storage consumers. Plex: Why Is My Plex Media Server Directory So Large?
Plex also lists storage among the general constraints on a server. Playback transcodes can add temporary storage use, while a library conversion tool may use a separate cache location; these are distinct from the final media-file footprint. Plex: Network and server requirements

Choose settings against your own files and devices
There is no supported universal preset or controlled comparison here that proves one encoder setting will be best. Evaluate a small sample from your own library before applying a workflow broadly, and compare the factors that affect the result:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Quick Recap
- Final size: Compare the new file with its original rather than applying a vendor percentage to the whole library.
- Visible quality: Inspect scenes with motion, fine detail, dark gradients, and other material where encoding artifacts may be noticeable.
- Processing time and workload: Encoding can occupy CPU or GPU workers; a large job may take longer than one night, depending on hardware and settings.
- Playback compatibility: Test the resulting files on the actual Plex clients in the household. Plex may need to transcode when a client cannot play a source format directly, so smaller storage files are not automatically more convenient.
Plan an overnight run safely
- Measure the right locations. Record free space on the media volume, identify the Plex server data directory, and check where playback transcodes and the library tool’s cache are stored.
- Pick a small representative batch. Include different source formats and kinds of content rather than judging the workflow from one easy-to-encode file.
- Allow for temporary working files. Confirm the cache location and available headroom before starting. If the cache is on another volume, verify that volume too.
- Review replacement behavior. Confirm that the tool is configured to replace or retain originals as intended, and keep a recoverable backup of anything you cannot afford to lose.
- Check the outputs before scaling up. Compare file sizes and image quality, then test direct playback and any transcoding behavior on your Plex clients.
- Monitor the first longer run. Watch free space, processor or GPU load, and job errors. Stop the queue if the working volume approaches capacity or outputs fail checks.
