The crucial difference from a simple “light knocks electrons loose” explanation is that absorption first creates an exciton—a bound excited state—not two freely moving charges. Only charges that separate, travel to their contacts, and avoid recombination can contribute to current in an external circuit.
The conversion sequence, from photon to current
An organic photovoltaic (OPV) cell turns light into usable electrical current through a series of linked events. The short version is: photon absorption, exciton formation, movement to an interface, charge separation, transport, and collection at electrodes. Each stage must work well enough for the next; light absorbed in the active layer is not automatically converted into electricity.

- Absorption: An organic semiconductor absorbs a photon whose energy matches a transition the material can support.
- Excitation: The absorbed energy promotes an electron to a higher energy state, leaving behind a positively charged hole. At first, the electron and hole remain associated as an exciton.
- Movement to an interface: The exciton migrates through the absorbing material until it reaches a suitable donor–acceptor boundary.
- Separation: At that boundary, transfer between the two materials can separate the electron and hole into charges that can move through the device.
- Transport and collection: Electrons travel through acceptor-rich pathways and holes through donor-rich pathways toward their respective electrodes.
- External current: When the electrodes are connected through an external circuit, collected charges move through that circuit and supply electrical current.
As the U.S. Department of Energy puts it, “Upon absorbing a photon, the resulting exciton migrates to the interface between the absorber material and the electron acceptor material.” That interface step is central: an exciton that does not reach a useful interface may fail to become a collected pair of charges.

In an OPV, absorbing light creates an excited electron that remains electrostatically associated with the hole it leaves behind. That bound pair is called an exciton. It is not yet equivalent to an electron and a hole moving independently through a circuit. The exciton must reach a region where the materials’ properties make charge separation possible.

This is why an explanation that skips straight from “the cell absorbs sunlight” to “electrons flow” misses an important part of organic photovoltaics. Light absorption creates the opportunity for current, not current itself. The exciton has to move, separate, and then survive transport to the contacts. Losses can occur along the way, including recombination, in which charges cease to be available for collection.
The exact microscopic behavior depends on the materials and their arrangement. Organic cells may use polymer or small-molecule donors, alongside fullerene or non-fullerene acceptors. These combinations do not all behave identically, so a single detailed pathway should not be treated as universal. A 2024 review in Nature Physics discusses exciton generation, diffusion, transport, separation, and recombination across OPV systems.
How donor–acceptor materials and interfaces help separate charge
The active layer commonly combines two roles. A donor material absorbs light and supports the creation of an exciton; an acceptor material helps draw the excited electron away from the hole. At their interface, differences between the materials can make transfer energetically favorable, separating the charges. The electron and hole can then move along different material pathways rather than remaining bound together.
Many contemporary OPVs use a bulk heterojunction: donor and acceptor materials are blended throughout the photoactive layer instead of being placed only in two simple, flat layers. This arrangement places many donor–acceptor interfaces within reach of excitons, which often travel only limited distances in organic materials. A nearby interface improves the chance that an exciton will arrive where separation can occur before it is lost.

However, simply maximizing interface area is not enough. The separated charges also need continuous routes to their respective electrodes. If the blend offers abundant interfaces but poor connectivity for electron or hole transport, charges can become stranded or recombine before collection. A useful active layer therefore balances access to interfaces with connected transport pathways.
What sets the active layer’s performance
- Energy levels: The relative properties of the donor and acceptor influence whether charge transfer and separation can occur.
- Domain structure and morphology: The size, distribution, and shape of donor-rich and acceptor-rich regions affect how far excitons must move and whether charges can find pathways to contacts.
- Layer thickness: The active layer must absorb light while still allowing charges to travel to the electrodes without excessive loss.
- Interfaces: Boundaries within the blend can assist separation, while interfaces between layers can affect charge extraction and stability.
These design variables interact. A change that improves absorption or creates more interfaces may also complicate transport. The morphology of the blend and its buried interfaces can influence both performance and stability, as discussed in a 2026 review in Nature Reviews Clean Technology. There is no one structural setting that can be described as best for every material formulation.
How separated charges become electrical current
After separation, electrons move through acceptor-rich regions toward one electrode, while holes move through donor-rich regions toward the other. The electrodes collect those charges. When a circuit connects the contacts, charge movement through the circuit produces current; the device can then deliver electrical power to a connected load.
Current depends on successful collection, not just on how many photons entered the material. If an electron or hole recombines before reaching its contact, that charge pair does not contribute to useful output. The device must therefore coordinate the whole chain: excite the material, separate charge, provide routes for both types of charge, and extract them before they are lost.

This distinction is useful when thinking about efficiency. A material can absorb light yet still perform poorly as a solar cell if excitons do not reach interfaces, if separated charges cannot travel through the blend, or if too many charges recombine. The electrical output reflects the combined behavior of the material system and device structure rather than absorption alone.
What reported OPV efficiency figures mean
Power conversion efficiency is the fraction of incident light power converted into electrical power under specified measurement conditions. It is a useful comparison metric, but a high figure for a small research cell is not a prediction of the output of a commercial product or an installed module. Device area, certification, illumination and measurement conditions, and whether a result refers to a cell or module all matter when interpreting a number.
| Reported result | What it describes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Certified efficiency exceeding 21% | High-end OPV result cited by Nature Reviews Clean Technology in 2026 | A reported research-level result, not a typical commercial module rating |
| Efficiency of at least 15% for modules exceeding 10 cm² | Large-area module progress cited by Nature Reviews Clean Technology in 2026 | A scale-up milestone distinct from a small laboratory cell |
| 18.2% certified cell efficiency | Figure on the National Laboratory of the Rockies OPV webpage, which has no publication date stated | An undated webpage snapshot; the 2026 review reports certified performance exceeding 21%, so 18.2% should not be presented as the latest record |
The difference between a cell and a module is especially important. A record cell result does not by itself show that the same performance can be maintained over a larger area, integrated into a finished product, or retained over years of operation. The 2026 review’s separate figures for certified efficiency and modules larger than 10 cm² illustrate why readers should check both performance and device scale.

Organic cells can be designed to be lightweight, flexible, colored, or semitransparent. Solution-based deposition also offers the potential for coating and roll-to-roll manufacturing. These characteristics could suit applications where low weight, a flexible form, a particular appearance, or integration into a surface matters. They are design possibilities, not proof that every proposed application is already a widely available product.

Efficiency is only one part of whether OPVs can be deployed successfully. The technology also has to meet requirements for operational stability, encapsulation, mechanical durability, scalable coating, manufacturing cost, and environmental processing. Photo-oxidation is among the stability concerns. The Department of Energy identifies lifetime and reliability as research challenges, while the 2026 review frames readiness as requiring progress in efficiency, long-term stability, scalable manufacturing, and cost effectiveness together.

When two cells or performance claims are presented side by side, check whether they are measured on comparable terms. A small certified research cell should not be directly equated with a larger module or an installed product without explaining the difference.

Organic photovoltaics are not the same as dye-sensitized solar cells
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are related photovoltaic devices, but they are a distinct hybrid organic–inorganic technology. The Department of Energy describes a DSSC as using small-molecule absorber dyes together with an electron-accepting oxide, such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, and an electrolyte that regenerates the dye.
A classroom cell made with berry dye and titanium dioxide can demonstrate photovoltaic principles, but it is not a direct demonstration of a conventional donor–acceptor OPV active layer. In an OPV, the key mechanism described here involves excitons reaching a donor–acceptor interface and separating into charges that travel through the blended organic materials. Calling a dye-sensitized kit an organic solar cell kit without explaining the distinction blurs two different device designs.
A hands-on way to observe an organic solar module
A University of Southern Denmark student guide names the E. Wattson Organic Solar Cell Kit and describes measuring an organic solar module’s current and voltage with a multimeter and leads. Such a measurement can help a student observe electrical output from an organic module; it does not, by itself, reveal the microscopic exciton and charge-separation process inside the active layer.

The guide is an educational source, not a retailer listing. It does not establish current availability by region or confirm package contents, so those details should be checked before relying on the kit for a class or project. A generic silicon-panel kit or a berry-dye DSSC kit would not demonstrate the same donor–acceptor OPV mechanism.
