How OpenClaw Connects Chat to Agents—and When to Split Gateways

OpenClaw’s Gateway connects channels and clients to an embedded agent runtime. Learn how bindings route messages to multiple agents and when separate Gateways are the safer choice.

OpenClaw’s Gateway connects chat channels and clients to agents, while its embedded runtime assembles prompts, runs the agent loop and tools, manages sessions, and delivers responses. One Gateway can host multiple configured agents, with bindings routing incoming traffic to the intended agent. Separate workspaces help organize agent state, but they do not by themselves create a secure boundary between mutually untrusted users.

What the Gateway does

The Gateway is the self-hosted process that connects messaging applications to AI agents. It acts as both a transport layer and a control plane: operator and node clients connect over WebSocket, identify their role and scope during the handshake, and use the Gateway to reach the relevant services. OpenClaw describes the WebSocket protocol as its single control plane and node transport. OpenClaw’s overview and its Gateway protocol documentation explain those responsibilities.

In practical terms, the Gateway is the shared connection and coordination point—not simply another name for the agent. Agent tools running inside it dispatch through the router, which retains method scopes, agent and approval authority, deadlines, and cancellation. That gives the Gateway a role in controlling how requests move through the system as well as carrying connections.

What the agent runtime does

The runtime is the part that carries out an agent turn. OpenClaw’s built-in runtime assembles prompts, wires in tools, and runs the agent loop. Its documented surface also includes model discovery, session management, and channel delivery. This embedded runtime is OpenClaw-owned; it is distinct from work delegated to an external harness process. See the agent runtime and workspace documentation.

Workspace and session are different kinds of state

An agent’s workspace is its working directory for tools and context, and may include bootstrap files. Session history is conversation state; OpenClaw’s multi-agent setup gives configured agents their own SQLite-backed session history. A separate workspace can help keep an agent’s files and context organized, but it should not be treated as proof that the agent cannot access other agents’ data.

How one Gateway can serve multiple agents

With no agents configured, the default agent ID is main. Multi-agent configuration creates distinct agent scopes within the same Gateway process. Each configured agent can have its own workspace, agent directory, authentication profiles, model registry, and session history. These are separate agent states managed by a shared Gateway, not separate Gateway processes. The multi-agent routing documentation describes the configuration model.

How inbound messages reach an agent

Bindings associate a channel account or other matching criteria with an agent. When inbound traffic matches a binding, the Gateway routes it to that agent. This lets one Gateway serve different configured agents for different accounts or routing conditions. Operators should inspect the actual bindings and agent ownership rather than assume that a message goes to a particular agent because of its channel alone. In explicit-ownership fleet configurations, the documentation notes that channels and services do not have an ambient default agent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Configure the agents and the state each should use, including workspace and agent directory.
  2. Set bindings that match the relevant channel account or other intended criteria to the correct agent.
  3. Verify the ownership and routing rules for every channel or service, especially in a fleet configuration.
  4. Review each agent’s access to sessions, other agents, tools, and sandboxed resources separately from its routing configuration.

Bindings determine where work is routed; an agent ID or session key is a routing choice, not an authorization token. Routing identifies the destination, but does not by itself establish who is permitted to read a transcript or invoke a tool.

One multi-agent Gateway or separate Gateways?

The choice depends on whether operational simplicity or a stronger trust boundary matters more. The comparison below summarizes the documented architectural trade-off; it is not a claim that either arrangement guarantees isolation without appropriate configuration.

Deployment Operational model State and credentials Trust boundary
One Gateway with multiple agents Shared Gateway process and infrastructure; bindings route traffic to distinct agent scopes. Agents can have their own workspaces, agent directories, authentication profiles, model registries, and session histories. Agents share a Gateway security context. Per-agent controls can narrow access, but separate workspaces alone are not a tenant boundary.
Separate Gateways Each Gateway is a separate process and must be operated separately. Gateway-level state and configuration are separated by deployment; the exact setup depends on how each Gateway is configured and hosted. OpenClaw’s security guidance recommends separate Gateways for strict separation between different trust levels.

OpenClaw explicitly says a Gateway is not intended to serve adversarial tenants. The documented defaults allow cross-agent session visibility and agent-to-agent access, so an unsandboxed, tool-enabled agent may be able to reach other agents’ sessions. The security trust model is the relevant reference for evaluating this boundary.

What to review before sharing a Gateway

Think through the access paths, not just the workspace layout. A useful review asks who can access conversation transcripts, which tools each agent can invoke, and whether sandboxing constrains file and process access. The following controls are documented options to examine; their presence should not be mistaken for a guarantee of isolation without verifying the effective configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Session visibility: Limit which sessions an agent can see when the default cross-agent visibility is too broad for the deployment.
  • Agent-to-agent access: Restrict the allowed agent pairs or disable ordinary cross-agent access where collaboration is not needed.
  • Tool permissions: Apply per-agent tool policies so an agent has only the capabilities appropriate to its role.
  • Sandboxing: Apply per-agent sandbox policies and assess whether they constrain the file and process access relevant to your threat model.
  • Deployment separation: Use separate Gateways when agents serve different trust levels and strict separation is required.

Configuration defaults and security behavior can change as OpenClaw evolves. Consult the linked official documentation for the version you operate, and verify the effective routing and access settings in that deployment.
