How OpenAI and Anthropic Make Money From AI Products

OpenAI and Anthropic make AI products available through subscriptions, organization plans and usage-based services. Here is how their billing paths differ, and what public prices do not reveal.

OpenAI and Anthropic charge customers through a mix of individual subscriptions, business seats, and usage-based services such as APIs. The key distinction is that a seat or subscription may buy access without covering every use: business customers can face additional usage charges, and consumer subscriptions do not automatically include API access. Their public pricing pages explain how customers are billed, but do not reveal either company’s total revenue mix or profitability.

How OpenAI charges for its products

ChatGPT Business seats

OpenAI sells ChatGPT Business in Standard and Premium seat types. On the pricing page checked October 7, 2026, Standard was listed at $20 per user per month with annual billing or $25 with monthly billing; Premium was $100 per user per month annually or $125 monthly. A Business workspace requires at least two seats, and the overview says customers can combine seat types. Prices may vary by country and change over time. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT Business pricing and Business overview.

Extra workspace usage

OpenAI says Business customers can buy workspace credits to extend usage beyond included limits. For eligible Enterprise agreements, usage may instead be billed on token-based pricing that accounts for input, cached input, and output tokens. Which mechanism applies depends on the workspace’s agreement; the listed seat price alone may not capture total customer spend. The Business overview describes these billing options.

API billing is separate

A ChatGPT Business subscription does not include API usage. Developers building applications with OpenAI’s API need a separate billing arrangement, with charges tied to API use rather than drawn from a Business seat subscription. OpenAI states this distinction in its ChatGPT Business overview.

How Anthropic charges for Claude

Individual and team subscriptions

Anthropic offers Claude subscriptions, including individual plans such as Pro and Max, and a Team plan priced per person with a minimum team size. Its pricing page listed Pro at $17 per month with an annual subscription ($200 billed upfront) or $20 month to month when checked October 7, 2026. These are product prices, not company revenue figures, and the plan details can change. Current options are shown on Anthropic’s pricing page.

Enterprise seats plus usage

For Enterprise customers, the seat fee covers access, while usage in Claude, Claude Code, and Cowork is billed separately at standard API rates based on consumption. Enterprise spending can therefore combine a recurring seat charge with variable usage costs. Anthropic explains this arrangement in its pricing information.

API and Console billing

Most organizations pay for API and Console use with prepaid usage credits; organizations with an invoicing arrangement are billed monthly. A paid Claude subscription does not include API or Console access, which require separate billing. The billing routes are described in Anthropic’s API usage billing help article and its subscription and API access help article.

Cloud-platform access

Anthropic’s model-pricing materials also list access through AWS Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, and Microsoft Foundry. This gives some organizations another way to procure hosted model access; provider, model, and sometimes region can affect pricing. The listing does not establish a partner commission or affiliate arrangement. See Anthropic’s model information.

What these prices do—and do not—tell you

For a customer, the practical comparison is about the purchase path and the bill’s components: who needs access, what the seat includes, whether usage is limited or metered, and how extra usage is charged. Monthly seat fees and per-token API rates measure different things, so they should not be treated as directly comparable prices. API charges depend on the model and token consumption; check the provider’s current rates before estimating a workload.

For the companies, the public sources establish ways customers may pay—not how much revenue each product generates, what share subscriptions or APIs contribute, or whether any plan or company is profitable. A listed price is not evidence of sales volume, costs, or margins.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
