Open Worlds Atlas makes 19 open-world game franchises into orbiting planets, with a moon around Assassin’s Creed as a 20th destination. Its creator, Rumple Cryptoskin, says the galaxy uses a stateless orbit calculation based on elapsed time and Kepler’s third law: a planet’s position is worked out from a fixed epoch rather than advanced and saved frame by frame. The result is a browsable visualization whose motion, franchise timelines, and age counters share a coherent time model.
Why make game franchises orbit?
“If these franchises are planets, why would they just sit there?” That question, posed by creator Rumple Cryptoskin, is the idea behind Open Worlds Atlas. The browser-based Three.js project places franchises in a shared galaxy that visitors can explore from a first-person view, then open into pages with scrollable timelines of remasters, spin-offs, and sequels.

The project creator’s walkthrough, published October 5, 2026, describes 19 franchises as planets and a 20th destination as a moon around Assassin’s Creed. Those counts describe the creator’s implementation; they are not an independently audited catalog. Read the creator’s HackerNoon walkthrough.
How the stateless orbit calculation works
Instead of updating and storing each planet’s position on every animation frame, the project calculates it from elapsed time since a fixed epoch. This makes the position a result of the time input, not a state that must be carried forward from the previous frame. In the simplified model described by the creator, orbital period T scales with radius r to the 1.5 power: T ∝ r1.5, equivalently T2 ∝ r3, Kepler’s third law.

The creator assigns three lane radii and periods as follows:
| Lane radius (world units) | Modeled period |
|---|---|
| 8 | about 101 days |
| 13 | about 209 days |
| 19 | 369 days |
These are the project’s modeled values, not measured orbital periods. The outer lane’s 369-day period is the anchor for the approximate periods assigned to the inner lanes.

Why the galaxy moves faster than real time
A literal simulation at those periods would barely appear to move during a typical visit. Open Worlds Atlas therefore applies a 100× presentation-time multiplier to visible planet positions. In the creator’s example, the outer lane completes a visible lap in about 3.7 days of wall-clock time at that multiplier. The creator says the speed was chosen by trial and error, not by a measured perceptual test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe franchise-page age counters use real elapsed time rather than this accelerated visual clock. Keeping those two time scales distinct lets the galaxy visibly animate without making a franchise’s displayed age race ahead.

How a franchise maps to a planet
The visualization uses separate inputs for planet size and orbital behavior. Planet size comes from game-map area in square kilometers, transformed on a logarithmic scale. A separate score from 1 to 10 determines which of the three orbital lanes a planet occupies and also influences its axial rotation.
According to the creator, that score combines critic rating, lifetime-sales buckets, and the number of mainline entries, weighted at 40%, 40%, and 20%. Some scores are manually overridden. The mapping is therefore a design choice for this atlas, not an objective ranking of franchise quality, popularity, or importance.

How shared franchise pages and language selection work
The creator describes one franchise-page template populated with JSON data. The shared page code presents each franchise’s header art, timeline cards, age counter, and mascot overlay. The reported page count is 40 franchise pages across English and Persian, plus a separate galaxy entry page.

What the implementation lessons reveal
Recompute from time instead of accumulating motion
For this kind of orbit, the creator’s approach derives position from elapsed time instead of repeatedly adding a small movement to the last position. That avoids making the current location depend on a long chain of prior frame updates. The important design requirement is that the time input and period logic remain consistent wherever position is calculated.
Share the period logic with age counters
The walkthrough reports that a duplicated fixed year-length value once caused franchise pages to show incorrect ages for different orbital lanes. The lesson is to avoid separate, hard-coded time assumptions in the galaxy and page counter: both should use the same period logic so that lane-specific timing does not drift into contradictory displays.
Scope scrolling behavior by page type
A shared stylesheet also caused a scrolling problem. The galaxy overview was intended to remain fixed and non-scrolling, while franchise pages needed document scrolling for their timelines and scroll-triggered behavior. The account illustrates a common trade-off in shared styling: reusable rules simplify consistency, but page-specific interactions still need appropriate layout behavior.

What this example does—and does not—demonstrate
Open Worlds Atlas is a specific creative implementation of a Three.js galaxy, not a comparative performance study of 3D libraries. The walkthrough provides the creator’s account of its counts, formulas, timing choices, page structure, and bugs; it does not establish independent verification of the live project or its source code. Its most transferable ideas are architectural: calculate animation from a stable time reference, distinguish simulation time from presentation speed, and keep shared data and logic aligned across views.
