oh-my-agent (OMA) uses Serena’s bridge transport by default, allowing sessions in a project to share one Serena server. If the bridge is unavailable, OMA falls back to session-local stdio. That fallback is separate from scheduled daemon cleanup: reaping is disabled by default, and the reviewed documentation does not specify a Serena retry count or backoff schedule.
What “shared Serena daemons” means in OMA
With the documented default, serena.mode: bridge, OMA runs one Serena server per project and shares it across sessions. This avoids starting a separate Serena server for every session; the documentation describes the arrangement but does not provide a performance benchmark.

The alternative is serena.mode: stdio. In stdio mode, Serena runs session-locally rather than through the shared project bridge. OMA’s defaults guide presents it as a recovery option when the local bridge cannot start and as a choice when strict process isolation matters.

|---|---|---|
bridge |
Default; one Serena server per project shared across sessions. | Use the documented shared-server setup. |

These behaviors are described in OMA’s Important Defaults.

What happens when the bridge is unavailable
OMA’s defaults documentation says it falls back to session-local stdio when the bridge is unavailable. This is a transport fallback, not a setting that defines how many times Serena connection attempts are made or how long OMA waits between them. If you need stdio explicitly, the documented override is serena.mode: stdio.
For machine-specific settings, OMA supports a local configuration overlay. Because configuration resolution and precedence can affect the value OMA uses, check the configuration reference for your installed release and inspect the resolved profile with oma doctor --profile.

How Serena daemon cleanup works
Scheduled Serena reaping is disabled by default. You can still start an interactive cleanup with oma serena reap. To enable the scheduled path, the defaults guide specifies both setting serena_reaper.enabled: true and running oma serena reaper enable.

Reaping is a cleanup mechanism; it should not be confused with bridge-to-stdio fallback or with a retry limit.

What “bounded retry loops” establishes—and what it does not
A DEV Community article titled “oh-my-agent: shared Serena daemons, bounded retry loops” reports five CLI releases, versions 15.0.2 through 15.0.6, shipped in the week it describes. It characterizes the release theme as improving long-running agents, reducing stray processes, bounding memory, and ensuring retry loops stop. The page’s publication year was not established, so this is a report about the releases it describes, not proof of current behavior in every OMA version.
The same article reports 20 commits, 69 files, and roughly 3,700 lines added. Those figures are the article’s own report, not independently verified repository metrics. It also describes managed Serena runtime changes, a shared-daemon check command, scheduled cleanup with process-identity checks, reuse of managed Dart diagnostics, reporting when the shared server is unreachable, and waiting for attached clients to detach before replacing a daemon. Treat these as release-article claims rather than guarantees for an arbitrary installed version.

The reviewed official material does not establish Serena-specific retry counts, backoff durations, or a complete retry-loop policy. The repository describes retry and stop limits as part of OMA’s broader control boundary, but that does not identify exact Serena values. Do not assume a numeric limit or termination behavior without checking the source or release notes matching your installed version.
Check the settings for your installed OMA version
OMA configuration can be read from .agents/oma-config.cue or .agents/oma-config.yaml, with a local overlay available for machine-specific changes. The configuration reference describes layered resolution, CUE/YAML fallback, overlay merging, and process-level overrides. Exact effective values can therefore depend on the project and environment, not just the default shown in documentation.
- Open the configuration reference corresponding to your installed OMA release: OMA Configuration Reference.
- Review the project configuration in
.agents/oma-config.cueor.agents/oma-config.yaml, along with any local overlay or process-level overrides. - Run
oma doctor --profileto inspect the resolved profile. - For memory-pressure troubleshooting, use
oma doctorand the documented dry-run cleanup preview before taking action.
OMA identifies Serena as its default code-intelligence provider in its installation guide. Installation and configuration details can change, so use documentation and release materials that match the version you run.
