How Often to Use an LED Face Mask and How Long Each Session Should Last

LED face-mask schedules vary by model and mode. Use your device’s specified session length, weekly frequency, and eye protection rather than copying another mask’s routine.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an LED face mask for the time and frequency specified in the instructions for your exact model and treatment mode. There is no universal schedule: CurrentBody, for example, recommends 10 minutes per session three to five times a week for its LED mask, while an FDA-filed device describes different session lengths. Do not apply one mask’s routine to another.

How long should an LED face-mask session last?

Follow the session length in your mask’s manual for the mode you are using. A longer session is not automatically more effective, and the recommended duration is specific to the device.

Example: CurrentBody Skin LED mask

CurrentBody recommends a 10-minute session for its mask. The manufacturer says not to use the device for longer than recommended, citing its power output. This is CurrentBody’s product guidance, not a schedule for LED masks generally. CurrentBody’s product instructions

Why another mask may specify a different duration

An FDA 510(k) submission for a different LED mask describes 15-minute manual-mode sessions and 10-minute automatic-mode sessions. Those instructions apply to the device in that filing; they do not establish a recommendation for other masks. FDA 510(k) submission K223544

How often should you use an LED face mask?

Use the weekly frequency stated for your model and mode. CurrentBody recommends using its mask three to five times a week. That is a manufacturer’s schedule for that product, not a general clinical rule. The K223544 FDA filing also records a weekly protocol for its submitted device, underscoring that schedules vary by product. CurrentBody’s product instructions · FDA 510(k) submission K223544

Check the manual rather than borrowing a routine from another mask, even if the devices look similar. Their modes and intended uses can differ. For example, an FDA filing for the FAC08NA identifies red, amber, and red-plus-near-infrared modes for wrinkles, and blue or blue-plus-red modes for mild-to-moderate inflammatory acne. Those intended uses belong to that device and do not apply to every LED mask. FDA 510(k) submission K261052

How to follow your mask’s instructions

  1. Identify the model and mode. Use the manual for your specific mask, not a schedule found for another product.
  2. Check both the session length and weekly frequency. Follow the stated duration and number of uses for the selected mode.
  3. Use the specified eye protection. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises wearing the protection required by the device instructions; do not substitute improvised eye protection. AAD guidance on red-light therapy
  4. Do not extend a session or add extra sessions on your own. Stay within the manufacturer’s directions rather than assuming more exposure will improve results.

Device labeling matters because it provides the usage details and precautions relevant to that product. FDA guidance on low-level laser systems for aesthetic use—not LED masks specifically—describes labeling that includes frequency, duration, hazards, contraindications, side effects, and precautions. Who should check with a dermatologist first?

The AAD recommends asking a board-certified dermatologist whether at-home red-light treatment is appropriate for you. It flags two considerations in particular:

  • Medication that increases light sensitivity: You may not be a suitable candidate, so ask a dermatologist before using the mask.
  • Darker skin tones: Visible light may cause hyperpigmentation that can be more intense and longer-lasting. Discuss whether treatment is appropriate for you.

The AAD also says that long-term effects of red-light devices on skin or hair are not known. Do not treat a device’s clearance or filing as a guarantee of results or proof that every use is appropriate for every person. AAD guidance on red-light therapy
